Nope. As free as the air you breath!

Laser cards are being withdrawn by all Irish banks and replaced with Visa Debit cards.  Deposits from Laser cards to Betfair have always been free; deposits from Visa Debit cards are subject to 1.5% charge unless things have been sorted out recently.

I have had a visa debit card for about 3 years and, even though it is rare I need to deposit as I never back a loser, I am never charged for the privilege. Certainly for the consumer there is no downside in being forced to switch to visa debit.

is it the same on ur other account the galway man ?

What a joke, so the laser card is gone? More expense for people i see. They don't make it easy being a pro punter do they?
Report SamuelMorse February 12, 2011 6:46 PM GMT
u wouldn't have to worry about that mugfingers .
Report sinndar001 February 12, 2011 6:53 PM GMT
Lads my laser will be expired in a few months and I thought i read somewhere years ago that you can't withdraw your funds to a different card, so should i withdraw the funds (if there is any!) before my card expires or was I just imagining things.
Report redroar February 12, 2011 6:58 PM GMT
You can email betfair and ask them to remove the old card from your a/c. You can then withdraw the funds to any new card you add.
Report sinndar001 February 12, 2011 7:00 PM GMT
Thanks redroar. Fingers crossed there will be funds to be withdrawn!
Report redroar February 12, 2011 7:01 PM GMT
Sorry should add, that I've done that twice so you can definitely do it.

Betfair are charging 1.5% on all deposits by VISA Debit card. Miserable shower of f*ckers! None of the other bookmakers, PP, Lads and Hills charge for deposits with the same card.
Report Giant Strides February 20, 2011 7:20 PM GMT
Typical. Got one last week!

I wonder do moneybookers charge?
Report steeringjobnap February 21, 2011 2:29 PM GMT
Dear XXXXXXXXXX

Thank you for your e-mail.

Please be advised that the repsonse you have been given is correct. As we are not a bank, we need to use Merchant banks such as Streamline to move the funds from your bank account to our account.

Apart from Laser cards and UK issued Visa Debit cards there is no charge for the service, therefore we do not imply the charge to our customers. For all other cards, including non-UK issued Debit cards, we receive a 1.5% fee and we, therefore, charge the customer that same amount.
The link provided by YYYYYYY is a link that will show you all acceptable Irish deposit methods and their respective charges, where applicable.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further enquiries.

Kind regards

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Steeringjoe is that from here?
Report steeringjobnap February 21, 2011 4:13 PM GMT
Yes Rocket - raised it with them last year.

No luck though...

I was back & forth with them several times [across several different team members of their client servicing team].

The above was the "definitive" answer.

"YYYYYYY" [name blanked out for obvious reasons] was the previous
agent I dealt with [with "XXXXXXXXXX" & "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" being me; and the guy who has the final say].

That is very disappointing. Why is there a 1.5% fee on Irish issued Visa debit cards and not on the UK ones? Seems very strange.
Report hatama February 21, 2011 6:05 PM GMT
What kind of visa debit card is it that you use that doesn't get charged the 1.5% The Icchantika?
Report The Icchantika February 21, 2011 7:57 PM GMT
I have an English bank account and there is no charge to deposit with the Visa debit for that.
Report monksfield2 February 24, 2011 6:32 PM GMT
The options available to Irish customers are listed at
http://payments.betfair.com/eireland_eur.htm
It appears that Betfair wants its customers to switch to moneybookers.com once Laser Cards are gone, as it is the only other free and instant deposit method.

I don't understand why Streamline should be charging more to process Irish Visa Debit transactions than to process Laser transactions or UK Visa Debit transactions.  The letter issued by permanent tsb announcing the change stressed that the change was in the customer's interest.

Streamline is very cagey about revealing its own pricing:
http://www.merchantservices.ulsterbank.ie/index.html

Betfair, Streamline and the Irish banks should not be allowed to pass the buck back and forth on this one - keep pestering all three until one of them comes up with a sensible explanation for this new charge.

Maybe if Shane Ross gets elected tomorrow, someone can persuade him to raise this in the Dail!

The latest (good) news on this from my contact in Betfair is:

"This is an issue which we are activly working on and hopefully I will be able to shed some light on this in the coming days."

Those with AIB, the only Irish financial institution that has not either replaced Laser with Visa Debit or announced that it is about to do so, are not affected by this problem.

I actually suspect that those with other institutions who keep their mouths shut and carry on using their laser cards as before are also OK - as far as I can see, the ESB is still successfully collecting my direct debit via my laser card.

Betfair removed the laser card from my account when I registered the new card and queried the 1.5% charge.  I am actually tempted to try registering the laser card again and see if it still works.

However, I have heard that ATMs are swallowing laser cards which are used after the replacement Visa Debit card is issued, so its probably safer not to risk that.

good news Monksfield.

I am owed only a "tanner"; but it is the principle of the issue.

What happened? They were accepting Visa Debit cards without deductions for 2 weeks and now they have reverted to the 1.5% deduction.

Talk about a bunch of idiots not making it easy to do business with themselves. What do **** do in this area?
