PUNCHESTOWN on Thursday became the first course in Ireland to use covers to protect its entire track against frost, with the weather threatening Sunday's ****.com Tied Cottage Chase card.
Sunday's meeting is set to feature a first clash between Champion Chase winner Big Zeb and Arkle hero Sizing Europe, but frost is forecast every night until then and daytime temperatures are barely above freezing.
Fuel company Bord Na Mona and racehorse owner Rita Shah, who is also managing director of charity Shabra, have stepped in to provide the frost covers, which Bord Na Mona uses to protect its peat (used for home fires). Punchestown's racing manager Richie Galway said on Thursday: "The ground is soft and the viability of maintaining that is now down to manpower.
"Clerk of the course Joe Collins has been on site this morningand together we shall continue to monitor the situation. Horse Racing Ireland has been consulted and are very interested in the outcome."
