the truth hurts. i stated a couple of FACTS as i was at the meeting and "they" delete it!!!!!!!!!!!! why betfair?
By:
slikster did you name the bookie?
By:
yes. the "bookie" involved was operating a 135% book with 3 runners!!!!!!!!!FACT. shouldn't be allowed to stand ripping off the gullible public like that. do betfair not like facts and the truth?
By:
Slickster....I saw it too, except i saw it on the rails the gentleman you saw was only copying, still no excuse. How powerful are these people.
By:
copying lol... the fool couldn't even go 130% in case he made a "mistake"... seriously sad stuff...how these individuals have the neck to stand and quote these odds is beyond me. a law needs bringing in to stop this sharp practice.
By:
get a licence keypad warrior...wish i could afford a rails pitch..
By:
peppapig.....Were you betting at Leopardstown?
By:
It was a little unfair to single out a particular bookmaker. Overrounds north of 130% are normal in the Irish ring. Plenty of examples at Limerick today.
It's one of the reasons why the game is dying. Why would someone travel to a racecourse to back an even-money shot at 4/7? |
By:
Not in three horse races.
By:
i will reiterate....
the"bookie" i saw was betting without hurricane fly and solwhit. the sad specimen was going.... 4-6 voler la vedette 1-1 thousand stars 3-1 sublimity. this is a grade 1. what was he afraid of? why did he bother pricing it up at all? does he not want to take a few bets? does he know anything about bookmaking? risks? could he not go 10-11 11-8 6 or in and around? truly disgraceful image for the game... |
By:
Even in a two horse race they would not bet 4/6 and evens in fact in the old days in a two horse race the bookmakers had to bet 4/5...5/4 or 1/2...2/1 that was the rule.
By:
I agree, sort of.
But surely the issue isn't how one bookmaker priced up one race. What matters is the ludicrous overrounds throughout the ring every day. Why would anyone bet on Irish racing with a bookmaker when the average juice is roughly 130%? |
By:
wildmanfromborneo i doubt any bookmaker in the old days would have bet 4/5...5/4 or 1/2...2/1 on a two horse race. and if that was "the rule" back then i hope they bring it back in soon. the racecourses would be full but there might not be too many bookmakers there to service the punters...
By:
The figures you quote are from the SP but everybody on the racecourse beats the SP.The difference between an Irish betting ring and a British betting ring is the discrepancy in prices and the SP in Ireland is the lowest available price in England its the highest.
By:
Wildman who made that rule.
By:
I dont know who made that rule but it was there in the fifties and early sixties.
By:
Johnthebomb....A bit of hyperbole there, when was the last two horse race in Ireland, very few in the last decade.
By:
wildman i didnt quote any figures i used the ones you posted but seen as were talkin about betting without 2 there would be no SP anyway. I dont really understand what your trying to say in the 2nd post. Noone has said when these prices were on the board but id imagine it was when the bookie was opening up andthe prices would have changed a bit by the off. If im wrong i stand corrected. Slickster i personally wouldnt fancy betting to 108% when betting without 2 on a 5 horse race in ireland
By:
It takes me a while to post and sometimes the posts cross. My post about the SPs was in response to Blackwater it was also a defence of bookmakers in that i was illustrating that the SPs are no real reflection on how the bookmakers bet percentage wise.
The big overrounds generally occur in big fields usually maidens, understandable, but in a three horse race that betting does not look good.Slickster noticed it so did i and i actually had a discussion with other punters about it,the general comment was it reflected the slide in a certain bookmakers fortune, very sad. |

By:
wildman wasnt in leop..blackwater why would any one go racing,,,just today off my head at stages in limerick first fav was 4/7 could lay @ 1.52...second jolly 1.88 could back at 1/1....uncle junior 3/1 lay @ 3.65....i see you point in overrounds etc...and wild how can u make profit in a 2 dog race at 1/2 and 2/1...lay 100/200 and 200/100..holding 300 payout 300...pay tax and u made a loss...as for the bookie in questioin i think in alot of races he gives good value, betting chance a hard game cause turnover not there..
By:
Peppapig...Different times, almost fifty years ago,but as two horse races were rare bookmakers were prepared to have non profit races.I was in Leopardstown and they did not have any margin in Hurricane Flys race so maybe not as much change as you think.

in running a business wtf is wrong in breaking even in one race over the long term, inorder to generate good will and new customers. bookies are have no interest in the customers, only proft. roulette, virtual racing, bogus odds, and a few free biscuits and tea to keep them from going home.
By:
there was never a rule in a 2 horse race ever where a bookmaker had to bet to them prices wildmanfromborneo
By:
i think the whole point is free will.if he gets no biz at 130% he will have to go better prices til someone bites.supply and demand etc.i seen a bookie betting 4/5 each of two and 2/1 bar(6 dog race) one night in limerick ..he got no biz,(eventually he went a bit bigger!!)..but the point is supply and demand.if the price is right etc
By:
kavvie u really hate them limerick dog bookies

Exactly
If you have a shop that sells apples you will set a price . If a no one buys them at the price the price will be reduced to atract custom and to cover the costprice. A bookmaker's product is his prices . Why sell a 100 for 80 when you can get a 100 for it? On the day in question that particular bookmakers expenses assuming he had no staff would have been . pitch fee 125 boxes 20 Rdt tech support 25 racecard 3 fuel in this case wold be minimal as he is dublin based + 0.5% of turnover which unfortunately these days would not amount to much. As you can see he is actually making a contribution to Irish racing via his pitch fee which goes directly yo the racecourse and whatever levy he generates. That 125 euro alone is more than Betfair , the purplesite, pp.com, wi ll hill.co etc etc etc or any of the stay at home laptop commandos contribute to irish racing in a decade. So while you may complain about the prices without the aforementioned bookmaker and his colleagues funding for Irish racing would be a lot skimpier. |

By:
im hate no one..im just stating facts.and im not complaining either.if i want to back or buy anything i go where the best value is.im just after backing a horse at 12/1 which is 8s else where.simple economics.the lower the overrounds are the higher the turn over will be.the problem with people going to the track is that its costly and if you want to have a bet ur better off ringing one of the big firms where you will get bpg and double result.as well as paying 5.50e for a pint,3e for a cup of tea,and the famous beef roll for?...8e?..so long since i had one!!..so i dont know what the answer is..
By:
suppose u better off staying at home all right...Meet no one ,spend no money...
By:
10-12 i reckon, same price for the same roll with a frozen chicken fillet and with green/brown lettuce, red/yellow tomatoes and you have to put the mayo or ketchup on yourself, wtf ?
By:
off to thurles myself, looking forward to my beef roll with all the talk of one..better than sitting at home, lets hope there is value there ..be looking out for the value chances for ye...
By:
haha lucky you peppa..i agree with your sentiments.."the price of everything and the value of nothing" expression comes to mind... i have to sit at work and watch it all online
By:
