Wincanton Preview 03/03/11

Just to precis very briefly this evening....

Joe Tizzard : reported that Cue Card had galloped at Wincanton earlier in the day and was brilliant.... advised all present to take out a 2nd mortgage and whack it all on..... The more you put on the more you get back......!!

Paul Nicholls : Al Ferof would run well but was only running for 2nd place... He advised that Ruby thought that Cue Card was impossible to beat.

Tom Scu & Tanya Stevenson : Cue Card could not be opposed and would win despite bookies without A/P liabilities trying to get him beat on the day

Plenty of banter between Tom Scu and Nicholls regarding World Hurdle.... It was quite apparent that Nicholls thought that Big Bucks was the best he had ever had him and he would win.... The Panel apart from Scu concurred.....

Nicholls very bullish about 1833 running a very big race ( not ground dependant )... and bid me us farewell with the words  " get on 1833 lads

Panel: Kevin O’Ryan, John Carr, Ado Mc****ss, Paul Nolan, Ryan McElligott, Robbie McNamara, Patrick Mullins.

Supreme Novices:
All of the panel thought Cue Card was the one to beat. Paddy Mullins said that Day Of A Lifetime holds a better chance than Zaidpour who won a weak Royal Bond and needs heavy ground. Robbie McNamara said Hidden Universe will improve for the better ground and the step back in trip, he expects to be placed. Nolan said the vibes from Gigginstown are that First Lieutenant will run here rather than the Neptune and that Mouse is sweet on his chances.

Arkle:
All in agreement that it was a poor renewal and it was worth taking on those at the head of the betting. Nolan went with Starluck (Now a NR). John Carr said that Meade has always thought a lot of Realt Dubh and he was a big each way price. Robbie expects Medermit to take all the beating.

Champion Hurdle:
Nobody was that keen on Binocular. Paddy Mullins was very bullish about Hurricane Fly. Said he won a bumper on Menorah when he was with Tom Mullins and that he’d go to lectures in a pair of speedos if he beat Hurricane Fly! Doesn’t know who rides him yet though. McElligott and Robbie went with Peddlers Cross. Carr went for Menorah. Nolan was keen on Hurricane Fly.

Neptune:
Mullins can’t have Oscars Well. Said he couldn’t win a bumper and got beaten in some moderate races earlier on in the season. He said So Young doesn’t do a tap at home but that Ruby always rated him as the best novice in the yard – better than Zaidpour. Gagewell Flyer goes for the three miler. Nolan, Carr and McElligott went for Jessies’ horse. Robbie thinks Bobs Worth will beat the Irish contingent.

RSA:
General consensus was that Time For Rupert was poor value. Mullins said Mikael D’Haguenet and Quel Esprit will run in this. He seemed much more confident about Quel Esprit who he said worked very well at Leopardstown. Robbie was in agreement about Quel Esprit. Nolan and Ado went with Jessies Dream – both said Elliot rates him a stone and a half better than Chicago Grey who chased home the favourite before Christmas. McElligott gave a good word for The Giant Bolster e/w.

Champion Chase:
Ado tipped up Sizing Europe who will improve for the ground and the fast pace. John Carr stuck with Big Zeb. Robbie said the wind op has transformed Master Minded and that he’d win if anywhere near his form of old. Mullins thought Golden Silver beat Big Zeb fair and square the last day and he expects to confirm form with him. Said they initially thought he was a staying mudlark but that he won on quick ground at Punchestown and that the change of tactics has worked wonders for him. Paul Townend thought they’d been riding him all wrong in England and that he’s a different horse when held up. Nolan also went with Golden Silver.

Bumper:
Robbie said the Irish contingent were much better than last year. He rides a horse for Eddie Hales in the race and he gives him an e/w squeak. Said Star Neuville was the one to beat. McElligot and Ado said Colm Murphy was quietly confident about Raise The Beat’s chances. Mullins said that Michael O’Leary didn’t want to fork out the air fare for either of the Gigginstown pair but that they were worth following wherever they run because they are up there with the best bumper horses he’d ever ridden. Said Allure Of Illusion had been burning up the gallops recently. Also gave good word for the Shark’s horse. Said he beat Luska Lad easily in a recent gallop.

Stayers Hurdle:
Paddy was very sweet on Fiveforthree who he thinks is a massive price. Doesn’t think Mourad has beaten anything. Said David Casey will ride whatever Townend doesn’t ride. Carr and Nolan went with Big Bucks. Both Robbie and Ado went with Solwhit who they think is underrated in England. Said Byrnes was quietly confident of a big run.

Triumph:
Most of the panel think it’s between Unaccompanied and Zarkander. Robbie said Unaccompanied was very good at home but she’d like a bit of cut in the ground.

Gold Cup:
Ado went with Kauto Star. Paddy Mullins said he expects a big run from Kempes. McElligot went for Imperial Commander to retain. John Carr and Paul Nolan said the vibes behind Pandorama were very positive and they think he’d go very well. Robbie said he saw Pandorama work at Leopardstown and he couldn’t believe the speed he was going at. Robert Bagnall (owner of Pandorama) also spoke at this point. Said the horse definitely runs and that they were very sweet on him. Said Noel Meade texted him after he worked at Leopardstown on Monday and told him to ‘get on’!

Other races:
Robbie said Andrew McNamara was very bullish about Tranquil Sea. Mullins said that Call The Police would be their best chance in the handicaps, he’ll go for either the Conditionals Hurdle or the Coral Cup. He doesn’t know if Sir Des Champs runs but he’s a serious horse and he should be followed. Paul Nolan said Noble Prince has a good chance and he also runs a horse called Westmeath.

Best Bets:
John Carr – Tranquil Sea (O’Grady very bullish apparently)
Ado Mc****ss – Peddlers Cross
Paul Nolan – Hurricane Fly and Tranquil Sea
Ryan McElligott – Raise The Beat and Solwhit
Patrick Mullins – Hurricane Fly and Fiveforthree
Robbie McNamara – Alfa Beat (rides him in the four miler and expects him to take all the beating)

Well lads. Don't think anyone's commented on the one in Westsmanstown the other night. All off the top of my head so might have a few of the comments mixed up.

Charity Bets were as follows:
Evan Williams - €150 William's Wishes Grand Annual
Brian Flanagan - €150 Plan A Fred Winter
Colm Murphy - €150 Tranquil Sea Ryanair
Barry Geraghty - €150 Big Zeb Queen Mother
Jonathon Mullin - €150 Just Amazing Hunter Chase
Davy Russell - €100 Hurricane Fly Champion Hurdler & €25e/w Gagewell Flyer Albert Bartlett
Donn McClean - Can't remember?
Paddy Power - €150 Recession Proof Supreme

Davy Russell was very sweet on Hurricane Fly's chances in the Champion Hurdle. He said Solwhit could beat everything else in Ireland but couldn't close to Hurricane Fly. Incidentally, he said Solwhit would be ridden for a place in the Stayers. He was also a big fan of So Young and Gagewell Flyer. Seemingly Paul Townend told him that So Young was the best horse Mullins was sending over. He described Tranquil Sea as the bet of the meeting in the Ryanair.

Barry Geraghty wasn't as sensational in his comments. He gave nothing away about who he'd ride in the Supreme, saying a decision wouldn't be made until as late as possible. The rest of the panel did agree that Barry held the key to the race and the vibes were that he'd ride Spirit Son. In the Arkle, he went for Finian's Rainbow although his reasons were as much due to a lack of credible opposition (questioned if Ghizao was good enough, Realt Dubh's preference for soft and Medermit dropping back in trip) but he did say the horse was always a chaser in the making. Bobs Worth will go for the Neptune if soft and the Albert Bartlett if fast, can't remember exactly what he said about the horse. Ericht will be Henderson's only runner in the Bumper but Barry didn't say a whole lot about the horse and didn't know a lot about the opposition. He was very keen on Big Zeb, as were the whole panel who didn't rate Master Minded at all. Big Bucks was said to be a cert and represented far better value than other short priced Festival favourites Time For Rupert and Cue Card. Barry went for Denman in the Gold Cup and rated Sam Winner as the main danger to Grandouet in the Triumph.

Colm Murphy was very iffy in all his comments. Of his own, he was obviously happy with Big Zeb. He said Zaarito was out of Cheltenham but his low hurdles rating would be exploited later in the season possibly at Fairyhouse - the big Tuesday race of that meeting maybe. Again I felt he was hard to gauge when commenting on Raise The Beat. He didn't really know if the horse was good enough but would be sending him over to find out. Finally, Andy Mac was telling him about Tranquil Sea and that the connections of that horse were very confident of a big run - he's been trained differently this season.

Evan William's was very rational and balanced in his assessments. I thought he provided a bit of sanity to proceedings when others were possibly getting a bit carried away. As well as his own William's Wishes, he gave West With The Wind a very favourable mention in the Arkle - 50/1. If I recall also, he seen Imperial Commander work the other day and was very impressed.

Both Paul Nicholls and Willie Mullins were on conference call, neither said a whole lot. Ghizao was Nicholls' best chance of Day One with Mullins confirming he'd send three to the Bumper for certain, Tusa Eire, Allure of Illusion and Lord Gale. Ceol Rua the filly could also go but may be saved for the Mares Aintree Bumper which Mullins thought she'd win if she skipped Cheltenham.

Think that's the gist of it if anyone wants to add anything.

Snow forecast for eve of Cheltenham Festival

BY JON LEES 5:21PM 5 MAR 2011

CHELTENHAM clerk of the course Simon Claisse on Saturday said he would take little notice of the the long-range weather forecasts for the festival, one of which was predicting snow on the eve of the meeting.
According to Saturday's 16 day forecast by the Weatheroutlook.com snow could fall at the course next Wednesday and again on the Sunday and Monday before the meeting. In Claisse's forecasts provided by former BBC weatherman John Kettley therehas been no mention of snow.

"John Kettley has given me a forecast that goes beyond his normal seven days but I am not taking a huge amount of notice of it," he said. "He wasn't predicting snow anyway. Even if it is forecasting that, there is nothing I can do.

"The positive thing is that we are ready to race. Preparations will be complete tomorrow in terms of mowing. If snow comes, it comes."

The forecast Claisse has received predicts daytime temperatures of 7C to 9C, some overnight frosts and possible rain towards the end of the week, while the going remains soft, good to soft in places, though those conditions may be changed after today.

Claisse added: "I am not changing the going today but I probably will tomorrow. The balance is soft rather than good to soft but another dry day it will go the other way."

Lydia Hislop starred on the panel of London Racing Club's Cheltenham Preview Night

There was an A list panel last night for the London Racing Club Cheltenham Preview. Chaired with a light touch by Barry Faulkner, the remaining trio of speakers – ‘dodgy’ Dave Nevison, ‘loquacious’ Lydia Hislop and ‘gorgeous’ George Primarolo – were allowed to inform, provoke and otherwise entertain a healthy crowd.

But what of their views? Which nags did they have a shine for, and which lacked a winner’s lustre according to our panel of experts?

The panel started with the Graded hurdles, then moved on through the handicap hurdles, Graded chases, and handicap chases. Here were the key points they had to make (so far as my ****ss-addled brain can remember it!).

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – Cue Card’s to lose. Lydia was very sweet on his chances and made a clear distinction between Cue Card and last year’s ‘pegasus’ Dunguib.

The Irish horse came into the race last year rated 156, against Menorah’s 147 and Get Me Out Of Here’s 150. This year, Cue Card is rated 159 to Minella Class’ 148, with the rest lower rated. In other words, Cue Card is eleven pounds superior on ratings to any of his rivals.

Does that make him good value at 9/4? The general consensus was no, it didn’t, but he was far and away the most likely winner. My personal view is that, come the day, £40 to win £90 (or £4 to win £9) wouldn’t be a terrible way to ease oneself into the Festival – would be a nice winner to start with, but wouldn’t cripple the bank if it went west…

No especially strong cases for anything else in the race, with the Henderson pair of Spirit Son and Sprinter Sacre lambasted for having achieved slightly more than nothing to date in their facile victories. Also, it was noted that the former had only run on very soggy ground, which is was unlikely to be at the Festival.

Champion Hurdle was next, and the view was that whilst Binocular’s form in winning last year was the best in the race, that level was unlikely to be good enough to win this year, given the far stronger field assembled.

Menorah was a very highly regarded horse from all corners of the panel, and indeed ended up being the charity bet of the night. As I – and many of you – have also backed it, fingers crossed for that!

Peddlers Cross was given a nice talkup, and Lydia – who was present at Jockey Club HQ earlier in the day – reported that the beaks had loosened their sentence over formerly condemned man, Jason Maguire, so that he may now take his ride on the unbeaten McCain runner.

Nobody was particularly enamoured with Binocular, and in some quarters it seemed to stem to a personal vendetta against connections, which I found fairly interesting!

Some liked Oscar Whisky, Mille Chief was put up as a bridle horse (which I think might be a bit unfair), Hurricane Fly was pooh-poohed for perpetually beating up one horse (Solwhit) who may not be that good in any case. The Fly was also noted as having never made the Festival before.

All panelists agreed – and take heed here – that Festival form, either good or bad, was a strong portent to prospects the week after next.

In the Mares’ Hurdle, there was sentimental support for Paddy Rodford’s Sparky May, but logical support for Quevega, who is bidding for what the Yanks call a ‘three-peat’.

Personally I think the 20/1 about Banjexed Girl, an ultra-tough and consistent (nine times out of ten in the first two) is a very robust each way selection. She has no other entries and is likely to run. In my opinion, she only to beat one of the trio of Quevega, Sparky May and Carole’s Legacy to pay 5/1 a place (if you can find a quarter the odds the first three).

Day two, and the Neptune saw universal disapproval of the merit of Oscars Well form to date. Soft ground specialist was the charge. Against him, Bobs Worth was popular though there was a suspicion that he might find one too good somewhere in the field.

Put up as a big price outsider was James Ewart’s Aikman. Personally, I think he has plenty to find but he is progressive and there was some sager judges than me making the positive noises. You can get the stand out 50′s with VC. He most certainly will not be that price on the day. Whether he’s good enough is another question.

There wasn’t much of a view on the Coral Cup or indeed any of the handicaps, hurdle or chase. One that did get a mention – two actually – was/were Domination (which I’d backed the night before last) and Kumbeshwar (which I’d backed in the wrong race), both in the Fred Winter. I suspect that Kumbeshwar’s light was illuminated too early when he won on debut and that would have attracted the attention of the handicapper.

Domination’s route to here has been a tad more surreptitious, with a significantly improved winning performance last time having laboured before. Lydia shared my view that he’d improve for better ground, and he’ll be shorter on the day as well.

Molotof, twice runner up, has very good form and a commensurately high weight. It’s not inconceivable that he’d be good enough, but it would be some performance off 11-10.

No takers for the Pertemps Final (look when the final declarations are made was the eminently sensible riposte to Faulkner’s prompting), so to the World Hurdle.

There were those (Dave Nevison) who felt Big Buck’s is a shoo-in. There were those (Lydia Hislop) who felt that Grands Crus still had plenty to prove despite impressing to date. And there were those (Matt Bisogno) who felt that either Mourad or Fiveforthree might usurp them both. Obviously, I wasn’t on the panel and was just whispering my dissention from the cheap seats.

I’m not suggesting that BB won’t lead home GC. Rather, I’m saying that the prices leave no margin for upside in either case. Not for me.

To Friday’s hurdles, and the Triumph. Zarkandar was well liked after his impressive Adonis romp last weekend; A Media Luz was considered certain to pull her chance away by not settling; Grandouet was perceived to be a fragile favourite, there by default; Smad Place had a chance on early season form but may not have improved; not much else was worthy of mention.

I tend to agree that Zarkandar will take a lot of beating, despite relative inexperience. It’s unlikely to be a big field, and he might be able to lob along and pick up late. I may back him on the day, but given that I have about 20 ante-post tickets in this contest already, and have a terrible track record of locating the gold medallist, I should probably just sit tight…!

The Albert Bartless was an interesting betting heat, proffered Primarolo, the Tote’s PR man, and fine chap (we had a beer with him after where he offered thoughts on the plight of the Tote – that’s for another day).

His rationale was robust: the top horses in the race had multiple entries and it could fall apart. Looking down the lists for a certain runner could reward handsomely. Good logic indeed. But which blinking runner? That’s where it got more difficult…

The one George liked, and strangely it’s the one his firm is a standout price on, is Mossley. If you can forgive his capitulation last time in the mud at Warwick (which is easy enough given the certainty that underfoot conditions will be more favourable here), then 25/1 about a Grade 2 course and distance winner from the Henderson stable looks fair enough.

I couldn’t put you off him. Aikman is also entered here, and I don’t know where he’s more likely to take up his engagement. So I should point out that now is a good time to go ‘non runner no bet’. [Mossley is a best priced 20's with the NRNB brigade, whilst Aikman is 25's with Coral and Bet365]

Bet365 led the charge yesterday and have now been joined by Coral, Paddy Power and Stan James. The skirmish for our folding is underway. Bookie generosity only lasts for a fortnight each year, and it is this fortnight. Get stuck in!

Onto the chase races, and back to Tuesday.

The Arkle was felt to be between the first three in the market, although Finian’s Rainbow was crabbed for beating a total of seven horses in three chase starts to date. Ghizao was considered a much more solid investment having shown course and distance form to see off Captain Chris.

Medermit split the panel, with Nevison eulogising about his 14′s voucher and Hislop decrying him for having refused. Whilst I think the refusal was a blip, and I see Medermit as having improved, I do feel that he’ll be better over further and could end up a Ryanair winner if not a Gold Cup champ next year.

I’ve sided with the Irish form, and had backed Noble Prince at 25′s before he was routed towards the interim novice affair. So, throwing good money after bad no doubt, I have backed Realt Dubh to win a decent amount at 12′s. Realistically, one of Ghizao and Medermit will probably win, but if you’ve missed the prices it might be as well to sit this one out.

Bensalem attracted support from Dave N for the Spinal Research Handicap (formerly the William Hill Trophy), though not from anywhere else, and a look at this horse’s 12F form figures (1/11121/12F2F2-52) make it easy for me to consider this one as a flatterer to deceive. Those Cheltenham fences aren’t getting any easier, and he’ll clout at least a couple this time again.

Take him out and it’s 8′s bar. I’ll hope to find the right one on the day.

The Cross Country was lampooned, despite it offering a good opportunity to find a winner. Look to the Irish at the top of the market, simples.

In the preposterous four mile novice chase for amateur riders (!!!!), it was noted that the top six in the betting were Irish. Considering they’ve only won one of the last eleven runnings (Another Rum, in 2005 at 40/1) and fancied Irish nags make no appeal in a race like this.

Incidentally, nor does anything else. Except Jonjo’s runners. Four wins in the last decade. He’s got four entered up: Aberdale, Alfie Sherrin, Born Again and Galaxy Rock. 16/1, 25/1, 33/1 and 40/1 (the first three NRNB) is appealing for the O’Neil scattergun approach. You heard it here first. Or at least you heard it here.

The RSA Chase was big for Nevison, who was all over Rupert. Time For Rupert that is. Again, the price has long gone. 9/4 now having never been bigger than 8/1. I like a rag in this race, and this year will be no different.Wymott, though not a huge outsider, offers hope and a touch of value at around 12/1 (only 10′s with the NRNB boys, but he’ll probably run so worth the chance in my book. Famous last words?)

Wymott was a Grade 2 hurdle winner and is unbeaten in three easy chase runs. ‘Gorgeous’ George was very sweet on his each way prospects, and it’s hard to argue that you’ll get a run from this strapping sort.

In the Queen Mum, the negative vibes around Master Minded were palpable. Lydia defied her ‘tom boy’ persona by confessing great affection for both this chap and the other Clive Smith superstar, Kauto Star, but she wasn’t that sweet on his chances here.

He’s considered on the downgrade, a comment that may also apply to Big Zeb who is now a ten year old. The consensus was that it was far from a two horse race, and that the Arkle form from the previous year tends to get overlooked. Festival Form, they bellowed. Or at least Lydia did.

Somersby was la Hislop’s suggestion, as it was for both the Gold Cup and Ryanair. I know how you feel, Lyds, I know how you feel. And here’s why…

Sizing Europe, my nemesis, was the value each way call. I lumped on when he cruised round and ‘something happened’ in the 2008 Champion Hurdle; I ignored him to my cost when he won the 2010 Arkle; and I backed him for the Gold Cup this year before he was directed at the Champion Chase. I will back him, and I feel sure his price will truncate.

The 16′s has gone but there’s plenty of 14/1 non-runner no bet (NRNB).

Thursday’s chases followed, and the Jewson Novices Chase to begin, a new intermediate race which cost me my lump on Noble Prinve. I’ll be backing him here, and Lydia supported that with a recognition of his fine run in the County Hurdle last year when 5th.

There were for’s and against’s for Captain Chris, a horse who has had more second’s the Dawn French, Jo Brand and the late Cyril Smith combined (sorry).

Wishfull Thinking by contrast was given a strong chance, with the almost hackneyed by now caveat that he needs to continue to improve his jumping (came down when cruising in a handicap hurdle last year, with my dough on him). I’ll have a bet on him on the day too.

The Ryanair was next, and Lydia does not like this one. She appears a traditionalist and is seemingly no fan of any of the new races. I tend to share that view, though I’m not always accused of being a traditionalist.

Nevertheless, a winner was sought and suggestions were offered forth. Poquelin from Dave N, Riverside Theatre from my mate Jerry (immediately dispelled as a flat track specialist from the panel – sorry Jerry, as I was saying, it’s the Aintree Melling Chase for this one!), and Somersby for Lydia – who conceded she’d already backed and lost her stake on both the Ryanair and Gold Cup with this chap.

With no views on the handicaps, it was onto Friday and the main event, the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. Imperial Commander was recognised as an aging player, Kauto Star and Denman were noted as capable veterans for the frame, and it was suggested that an upset may be on the cards this year, with a ‘changing of the guard’ (I love that cliche!).

Long Run was considered unsuited to Cheltenham’s undulations and doubtful in terms of stamina (I tend to agree), Diamond Harry had bad vibes from a reliable stable source (the trainer, Nick Williams, apparently!), Kempes was felt to have been over-hyped on the back of a single run, Midnight Chase not good enough (though certainly as game as they come), and then it was 25/1 the rest.

Although I was totally wrong with my answer previously (Sizing Europe), I maintain that there’s a strong possibility of either Imperial Commander or a complete outsider winning the race. As such, I think 7/2 about the Commander is fair and would save on that on the day. Down the list, I’m looking to detonate a bomb, and I’m actually toying with Synchronised.

He’s a doughty stayer and safe jumper generally, with a Welsh National under his belt this season. If you believe the argument about the regression of the top rated horses, this could actually turn out to be the worst Gold Cup for a very long time. Indeed, it’s possible it will be no more than a limited handicap. He’s 66/1 with Coral and Stan James (NRNB).

I should add that Lydia put me onto that one, so I can’t take any credit (assuming any may be due!)

So Synchronised and also Tidal Bay. The Bay may be a bit of a monkey, but he’s talented and consistent. In ten runs round Cheltenham, he’s been in the first two seven times, and the first four nine times. 33/1 with Hills is a good each way price on a horse who will stay, and has class.

Ignoring the Foxhunters (maybe the favourite, but I’m sorry I haven’t a clue), that leaves the Grand Annual. I like Lastoftheleaders, and so does Gavin. The panel didn’t have much of a view, so we’ll leave it at that.

Had a few digs at Finians Rainbow. Can't jump well enough. Think's it needs a longer trip!? And thinks Kilmurry would have won the Kingmaker. Ghizao to win.
TS- Finians has only met about 9 horses. Medermit 2 and a half mile horse. Leaning towards Ghizao but goes for an outsider in Rock Noir who's 'done nothing right'.
JT- Agrees he would have given Finians a run with Kilmurry had he not made mistakes. Beat Ghizao but was very fit at the time. Finians doesn't jump well enough. Likes medermit. travelled well over 2m4 at cheltenham when he beat it on hells bay and didnt get up the hill. thinks a drop back in trip might help.
AP-loves Medermit yards really buzzing about him.
TOM-Medermit fan. Doesn't think the drop in trip will be a disadvantage after running well in a supreme and being a champion hurdle candidate. Will probably be riding Dan Breen who has a chance at 33-1. whether he's good enough he's not sure.
PP-Choc thinks Medermit best chance of the week. Realt Dubh won a few grade 1s maybe a bet at 9-1. only 1 fav in god knows how long has won the race.

Champion Hurdle-
PFN- Thinks Menorah will probably win. Likes PPeddlers Cross.
TS- Menorah fan. Watch the betting for Binocular. Thinks NJH is worried about Peddlars Cross. Goes on to pick a no hoper in thousand stars each way.
JT- Fan of peddlars cross. Not impressive at kelso but will come on for prep.
AP- N twiston davis. khyber kim looks good and stable are bullish about him. then starts to go on about mille chief stable buzzing about him. personally doesn't think he's quite good enough.
TOM- Ends the Mille Chief talk by saying he hasn't got a chance. Seemed keen on Binocular and thinks he's unlucky not to be going for his 3rd. Thinks he was ridden wrong in his first CH. Needs to be handy and ridden positively. Thinks come tuesday we will see the real binocular and he'll win again.
PP- Menorah a serious horse. Dunguib a good chance at 10-1. Shark fancied Luska to beat him first time out. Not suprised if any of the leading chances won.

Other-

PP- Choc thornton said that Daryl Jacob thinks Maljimar is his best chance of the week in the cross country.
PFN- Quantitive Easing entered in everything thinks it's one to watch. Then goes on to pretty much say Aigle D'or is a plot horse and he's better than what we have seen. He runs definity in a handicap and american trilogy. Thinks definity could be well in. He ran American Trilogy to get a hc mark at kempton going the wrong way round. (NOTE IMO HE HAS BEEN RUNNING THIS IN RACES IT CAN't WIN TO GET A NICE MARK)Dropped 4 lbs after Kempton.
TS- watch JP horses in the market in the handicaps.

Neptune-
PFN- Rock on ruby not set in stone to run in this or supreme. ground makes a big difference. outstanding chance.
TS- likes so young and court in motion if it runs.
JT- likes court in motion. has scoped badly touch and go to make festival.
Tom- likes oscars well and bobs worth.
PP- Bobs worth looks good. lively outsider first lieutenant. beat hidden cyclone who shark hanlon thinks will win a gold cup.

RSA-
PFN- Likes 1833 since he won his p2p. Had sore shins all the time over hurdles. couldnt train him properly. won well over fences and is the finished article. ruby didn't like him much to start with thought he was babyish. now does like him and makes a decision to ride 1833 or Mikael Dhag. Time for rupert good. short enough. Thinks mikael dhag jumps to the right and isnt half the horse he was 2 years ago and thinks ruby will ride 1833.
TS- Thinks Wymott is the best horse that ever lived bla bla bla bla bla Wymott Wymott Wymott. Nothing gone right for it Wymott is god of the horses. Basically if Wymott loses she's probably gna have a bad festival. Can't have Jessies Dream. Wymott is god the scopiest horse ever. Somehow thinks Time For Rupert has a better chance in the Gold Cup. She loves Wymott. Wymott Wymott.
JT- All Will Kennedy talks about is bloody rupert. joes a fan.
AP- time for rupert. francome rode him. fantastic attitude. very laid back.
Scu- plenty of time for rupert. likes bostons angel. thinks hes a likely winner and price too big.
PP- likes jessies dream. timmy murphy should have won on him lto.

Champion Chase-
PFN- horse not fit at ascot in jan. ground very deep. completely different animal to last year. worked with kauto went very nicely. never thinks he will repeat 08 performance but with a bit of cut in the ground he'll be hard to beat. slower on the old track. should be perfect. woolcombe folly done nothing wrong. had a little setback but now back in form.
TS- seems to think somersby will be better than woolcombe folly. thinks sizing has been messed about. probs wont have a bet.
JT- Master minded fan. if at his best will win.
TOM- likes somersby. improving
PP- big zeb is paddys nap. at a price sizing europe. arkle winners good record.

bumper-
TOM-likes cheltenian. a bit quirky but huge engine.
JT- no cue card this year. likes persian snow.
PFN- cant have persian snow on his form with balding banker. hasnt entered anything.
pp- flags up star neuville. shark hanlon says its the best bumper horse in ireland.

other-
PFN possibly pistolet noir on good ground at 33-1. coral cup?
JT- cannington brook in NH chase. going right way. pleased with him.
Tom Scu- kalinas. might not get in fred w?
pp- money for kalinas. nicky h likes celtus fred w
TS- still rabbling about Wymott

Jewson-
PFN- Robinson collonges. should have won giving weight to wishful thinking. fell. travelled well made a mistake in the race poquelin won.
Scu- rides mr thriller. on his day very good. bit of an enigma. runs the odd stinker now and again
PP- choc thinks richard johnson fancied wishful thinking in the jewson rather than cap. chris. agrees with pfn on robinson collonges. dickie johnson wants cap. chris in arkle.

Ryanair-
PFN- Nightingale needs soft. breedsbreeze may run but would need a miracle. poquelin in the form of his life. probably won't ever be any better. thinks its a really strong race with lots of grade 1 horses.
TS- Kalahari King. Checkered season. Nothing went right lto but still nearly came 3rd without many questions asked.
JT- Albertas Run ground permitting. good ground only.
Tom- big riverside theatre fan(now out of race). albertas run on good ground.
PP-open. couldnt pick 1

World hurdle-
They all discussed big bucks and grand crus.
Tom- GC pulls hard but pleasure to ride. bb the champ but all greats get beatan. not a 2 horse race. zaynar solwhit 543. wouldnt swap.
PFN- way hes working he will be very hard to beat. won 10 on the trot. anything that beats him is very very good. not a 2 horse race. ruby likes 543. if he gets beat he gos chasing. got a bit lazy at home but now as good as ever.
JT- thinks grand crus will set it up for big bucks. big bucks will stalk him. gc a sitting duck
pp- brilliant world hurdle. good price on big bucks. flags up 543. paul townend says its a machine.
TS-thinks powerstation will place??? big bucks to win by more than 3 lengths. likes big bucks

Triumph-
PP- A media luz forced into race. Hendo likes Grandoet. Brampour no back runner.
PFN- brampour best of his on flat. bit green and anfit first time out. will like better ground and will want further soon. ruby rides sam winner. shouldnt have run him at chelts. zarkander surprised him. got some class. daryl jacob rides. harry skelton rides brampour. were going to run sam winner in the supreme but ruby (apparently(£500 bet on recession proof at paddy power preview night))thinks cue card is impossible to beat.
JT- third intention. likes him lovely big strong horse. lost nothing in defeat. crying out for a strong run race.
Tom- mightily impressed with brampour. thinks marsh warblers done nothing wrong.
TS- Local Hero. Liked his attitude at Chelts.

Albert Bartlett-
PFN- Open race. Kilcrea Kim of P Hobbs one to beat. Join together has kept on improving and has a good chance
TS- Join Together.
PP- Interested in neptune equestor of brian ellisons. back in focus needs cut in ground.
TOM- likes bobs worth
JT- fan of court in motion. but as mentioned earlier not sure if it will run as its on antibiotics.

Foxhunters-
JT- Gone to lunch very good. Baby run very good. W twiston davis one for the future very good jock.
AP- Baby run. W twiston davis very good pilot. better than sam?
PFN- runs just amazing. likes chelts and good ground. baby run one to beat but could set it up for others.

Matin pipe-
TOM- if shoe gazer gets in could go well.
PP- arayan?

Gold Cup-
AP- P Brennan very happy with Imperial C. NTD thinks denman and kauto biggest threats. Backed Midnight Chase.
PFN- Neptune runs will go a good gallop. Kauto wants good ground in good form. Never thought kempton suits him. Denman wants soft. had a breathing op. long run very good. good king george. the best of the younger ones.
TS- Midnight Chase EW. Tidal Bay phenomenal record at cheltenham 33s EW.
JT- Paddy likes IC. worked with oscar magic who won a good bumper. good vibes big fan. Long Run hill????????
TOM- Midnight Chase. Handicapper comes through now and again. More than EW chance.
PP- Pandorama. Only lost once over fences and you can write it off. Noel Meade very confident. Maybe EW.

If that was the actual panel in Galway, it would be the greatest Cheltenham preview of all time.

Hilarious how the English preview nights generally totally ignore or write off the Irish horses. Loved how Hurricane Fly was basically an afterthought in a few
