The ring is finished in Ireland. So who can tell now who is the best punter. In the old days we had J P, Noel Furlong, The Hughes bros were regulars in the ring. All the heavies are gone .
The old days are gone forever . Completely different nowadays , not sure if there are any "big punters " around . Dont know as I seldom go on course these days , but I get the feeling that there are less lumpy bets than there used to be .
Over 20 years ago I knew one punter who would be betting 10k on his horse ( if he could get the bet on ) , not at evens , but at odds up to 10/1 . Sometimes he got laid , sometimes the bet would be halved etc , but that was essentially one bookies liability . Cant see that now , and with inflation etc it makes the change even more dramatic .

I remember a huge punter around the north kildare area......seemed to get good info and had a lot of hangers on......his party piece was buying champagne after the races...................then word got out this time last year he was broke and his lifestyle had cost him 2 farms of inherited land. He was a regular 5k e/w punter but really chased odds on shots.

Your right...the big stake guys never last........a few builders who got into racing are proof of that................I know an auld chap who is big into the point to points........he sets out to make €30......€20 for diesel and €10 for grub on the way home.....he is normally spot on.

Also interesting everyone is horse linking, Harry Findley lost 2.5 million on horses and won 11.5 million off other sports The biggest/best probably doesnt even watch racing, nobody knows though.

that doesnt make a good punter though. hes just as likely to drop the 10k. the small money at big odds is far more satisfying. good friend of mine had 100ew sea the stars 25-1 ante post for derby last year. thats just one example. hes been quite lucky with similar big price winners.

832/1 bf sp there in first race in roscommon. 434 /1 to finish in first 4 sp was 66/1 so if u had 1e ew on track ud win 80 roughly.if u done it on bf at sp ud get 1270e!! ring is fcuked. all going the same price which is usually.15/20% smaller than bf price..as for anything over 8/1 the difference is well over 40%...anyone taking on the ring is doing so at a big disadvantage.
