Dundalk.......next thing you'll be telling us is 'Staunton ' is normal. Get a grip man, Keane might be tinsmith material, but he was right to expose McCarthy as a buffoon. Perhaps he should have waited 'till the tourney was over, but he's a hothead and don't wear a watch or calender.

He was dead right to give the friendlies a miss. What do you think an international manager was going to learn from watching him in a meaningless match. Would you have preferred him to get injured in a friendly and miss a competitive match.

I just said he was right not to play in the meaningless friendlies, especially in seasons which consisted of up to 60 competitive games.
I'm sorry but only an idiot would complain about him not playing International friendles

What the man won should convince any neutrals of his true value he was the leader and best player in both a great United side and a good Ireland side. What any manager would give to have such a driving force in midfield. Manchester United announce he will miss the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.Laugh Hillarious indeed
McGrath is not close to Keane I don't think McGrath himself would even claim that. He is a good footballer a likeable guy but somehow the shyness, alcoholisim and the dodgy knees leave people nostalgic for him.
End of the day in this thread, people have such chips on their shoulders when it comes to Keane the mere mention of his name has forumites frothing at the mouth and yes while he is divisive people are in no way objective over the truth.
People highlight incidents which he was never charged with nor convicted of due in a number of cases to fabrication of evidence from little scrotes looking for either a payoff or five minutes of fame as some sort of evidence of his nasty streak.
He wasn't there to be anyones role model and while he was no saint at times those of us with an interest in football even sport prefer to remember the force of nature that he was on the football pitch capable of winning you games on his own which he did for both club and country. Upon his return from injury in 1998 he was probobly the best midfielder in the world for 2-3 seasons.

Inspirational figure. Shame more Irish can't replicate his drive and ambition.
Dragged us into that WC practically single-handedly (MOTM in all key games). Carried a bad hip injury to Saipan. United medics told him not to travel. He went because he genuinely felt we could win it (one wonders how many others in the squad possed this level of belief). Preparations a shambles. Everyone on the p*ss. Then he gets accused of faking an injury by a muppet liked McCarthy. He should have flattened him!

All the Keane fanatics always go on about how right he was about Saipan, the preparation etc. But if you actually analyse the original idea behind Saipan and then our actually performances you will see there was merit in McCarthy's and the FAI's decision to go there. Ireland used their time to acclimatise to the climate and conditions in Japan and Korea. When we got to WC our fitness levels were excellent-case in point being we scored late goals in all our games. If you look at most of the other teams from similar climates they struggled with conditions at WC-now that's poor preparation! A few missed bibs and balls was an easy fix. There has been lots of crap on here about how this was the worse Irish team in decades after one poor game v Russia. If you look back on when McCarthy took over he probably had the worse ever squad to work with. He also had to change a team from a system of long ball under the Charlton era to a side that actually played some very good football in 2002. And one more thing Keane walked out on Ireland the day before McCarthy eventually had enough of his disruptive influence on the squad.

Ye im sure that is all that was wrong, a few missing bibs and balls. If he had of said nothing, and gave out when he came back people would say why didnt u say something at the time it could have got changed!!

exactly arthur , one story of saipan is the panel were called to a meeting to be told by a doctor the advantages of a particular drink to take for dehydration, acclimatising etc.
By all accounts the meeting went on for 90 mins plus only for an fai official to then stand up and say that the drinks wouldnt be arriving for 10 days

PERFECTIONIST at moaning all the fkn time, he was no best platini or zidane, even brady was more talented.overrated pup.
I dont think even Keane rated himself in the same bracket talent wise as the above, he was the first to admit that he had limited ability but what he did do was to maximise and use those abilities as best he could.
Never met the man, not a man utd fan but admired him for his work ethic and the way he would lead a team, he demanded that his team mates worked as hard as he did.
sure he was no angel, and if you are going to cite being thrown out of nightclubs and being involved in pub scuffles as proof that you are an undesireable --- well id say thats most of the forum shagged :-).
what happened in saipan was badly handled by all involved, but imo you never call someones integrity into question infront of everyone else, something like that is always away from the rest of the "staff".
as a manager hes still in his infancy, give him time before judging him on that.
