Barry Connell has retired from racing riding. Bumpers in the UK and Ireland will be lesser affairs with his absence. Fabulous from the front it was often commented that perhaps only Steve Cauthen was his peer making the pace.  His finest moment and arguably one of the finest pieces of racing riding came on the 2nd March 2009 at Stratford on Frascatti Park. Those of us who had ploughed into the opening 6/4 will never forget it.

He has been a great supporter of the game and hopefully will continue to be for many years to come.

He does not deserve the p*ss to be taken out of him when he has decided that it is time to leave the race riding to the younger brigade and the professionals.

I am sure that he has enjoyed every bit of his time riding and he has given plenty to the sport, including the sponsorship of the Rockview series of bumpers.

had my nuts on Divy ew that day. It would have been the luckiest winner I ever backed but was still ill as they passed the line. The RP analyis on the race is brilliant..

FRASCATI PARK is a classy performer in this grade ...  Today was his first attempt left-handed, however, and it did not suit him at all, as he was hanging right and everything went wonky when he came very wide on the home turn. The owner/rider soon dropped his whip, and then the off-side rein, and he sat crouched motionless through the final furlong as favourite backers suffered pangs of agony, but at least this true Corinthian did not put the bump into Bumper.

Fair play to him,I'd have loved to have the opportunities that he had to ride his own horses.
He certainly put, and still puts a lot of money into the game.

We all (including him) knew  that regards his jockey skills that he made El Cid look like an epileptic but you knew that before you put your hard earned down.

Did he?Silly

He said in the RP this AM that he never read the forums. He said he would get enough ribbing whenever into went into a bookies to watch a race.

There is one more corinthian on the scene these days. Paul McMahon of the Dunne dynasty who has a fair number of horses.

A sound man who is keeping more than a few yards afloat,; unlike that other "saint" Barry pays his taxes in this country also.
He hasn't had the best of luck with horses Western Leader, Pedrobob and Massey Shaw all had great potential and in all three cases we only saw glimpses of it. He deserves a really good horse some day.

26%  (7 from 27) winning strike rate in the UK in the past 5 years with a +1.61 level stakes profit. This man deserves respect and let's hope he goes out on a winner. Happy

I remember the day he won a bumper in Cheltenham a beat Richard Johnson in the process.
