I have backed 5 players - All at big prices as i can see a turn up here - 4 of them who went well the last time it was played here in 2004
Justin Leonard : Finished 2nd - Beaten in a 3 way playoff when it was last played here in '04, a final round 75 costing him dearly, 12th in driving accuracy on the PGA tour,T14 in the US Open and looked to be coming back into some form the last 2 weeks with 2 top 25 finishes in the Greenbrier and the WGC(where a 76 in the final round put a dampner on his week)
KJ Choi : 2nd in the Transitions Championship, 4th in the Masters with a few other top 20 finishes - T6th here in 2004, Ranks 9th on All Round stats on the PGA tour, had a decent final round last week in the WGC after an average 1st 3 days
Stephen Ames : Has made 14/17 cuts this year - finished T9 here in 2005 a final round 75 the only blemish on a solid 1st 3 days - showed up well the last 2 weeks when T21 in the Greenbrier and shot a crackin final round 66 last week at Turnig Stone to finish T16 after a slow start, 6th for Greens in Regulation on the PGA tour
Darren Clarke : Availed myself of the 200/1 with Ladbrokes e/w - 2nd in the Scottish and Joburg Opens this year with 2 other top 10 finishes! Played a lot better in the British Open than his finishing position suggests after a 77 in round 3 in terrible conditions - T13 here in 04 after getting off to a blistering start with an opening round 65
Jerry Kelly - T3 at Turning Stone last week shooting a final round 64 toi shoot up the leaderboard, has 5 top 25 finishes this year including when T12 at the Masters, 25th in driving Accuracy on the PGA tour, and could go well at a decent price here imo
72 hole matchbet - Steve Stricker to beat Tiger Woods at evens with toatsport looks massive value if anyone can get on - Tiger looked like he just didnt want to be playin last week on a course he loves, hard to see him even making the cut here, would be a massive effort if he could get competitive imo
1pt e/w - KJ Choi 80/1 PP 6 places .5pt e/w - Justin Leonard 125/1 PP 6 places .5pt e/w- Darren Clarke took some 200/1 Lads 5 places .5pt e/w - Stephen Ames 150/1 Lads 5 places .5pt e/w - Jerry Kelly 250/1 PP 6 places 3pts Steve Stricker to beat Tiger Woods 72hole match bet 1/1
My 3 big price fancies (lets face it, it's the only way to bet on the Majors if you look at some of the freak results this year) are.........
MARTIN KAYMER 50/1 Has a decent record on linksy type courses. Won the French AT&T last year, 6th this year and was in the running for a place in the British Open before collapsing over the last couple of holes. He is the best putter in Europe and is long and accurate off the tee. Will win a Major one day so why not now when Woods, Phil and Co. are out of sorts.
SERGIO GARCIA 90/1 Yes I know it's mad to think he could be competitive considering he's taking 2 weeks off when this event is over but this man's record in the Majors is fantastic. Should've won 2 years ago but let Pod in without doing much wrong down the stretch. Yes his putting is woeful at times but an e.w. punt at 90's is a decent shout. Hits it a mile, accurate off the tee and a better long iron player you won't find.
RYAN MOORE 125/1 This is a very talented golfer who flies under the radar week on week out but I can see him having a high finish this week. He ranks 5th for Total Driving stats and is 23rd for driving accuracy. He opened with a 3 under first round in the British Open and then got blown away by the gales in round 2. Took 3 weeks off and then finished a credible 16th at Firestone to blow away the cobwebs. Prior to the Open he was 2nd to Rose in the AT&T on a particularly tough track.
I will be happy if one of these 3 are in contention on the back nine Sunday night and who knows one of them might even get the job done for a big payday. [:p]

Tough golf course , cross between Ballybunion and Portrush at design stage ( Pete Dye ) .
Looking for someone who likes the course ,can play it , is in decent form , and wont give up if things dont start out exactly right . McDowell ticks these boxes for me . Unusual if someone other than Tiger won 2 Majors in same year , but the exception sometimes proves the rule ! Should be good viewing anyway .

O'Hair & Kuchar.... consistently good form over most of the season so far and have better form than most Americans on links type golf (if that is what this is!)

Rory is in good shape . Playing well , good start tomorrow vital . Hard to believe we are in with a decent shout of 2 Irish major winners in the same year . Bit of a dream I suppose , but he has the game and the course suits .

Yup really needs a good start this evening cuz Watney is not a bottler and wont come back to them too easily imo like some of the collapses we've seen in the last few weeks in the US from the leaders

Rory stuck in there well , could have been better than 4th if he had sunk a few putss in the middle of his round . Event soured by Jonhson "bunker" incident . Reckon the Yanks have no idea what a real" bunker " is from what we saw labelled as a bunker ( which the crowd were using as a grandstand for 4 days ) .
So Pete Dye failed in his attempt to recreate a course which is a mixture of Ballybunion and Portrush ( Dunluce ) . No self respecting member of either of those clubs would accept that piece of trampled ground as anything approaching a bunker . We have real bunkers in Ireland , and crowds are not allowed in them . Sorry Pete , but your 84 years are not in vain , there is Sawgrass ( and others ) . Whistling Straits is a great spectacle , but 1200 "bunkers " ?
Someone posted that all sand filled divots could technically be construed as "bunkers " a la Whistling Straits . If so nearly every player incurred a penalty without declaring it , as I saw a lot of players grounding their clubs when playing out of the "divot" bunkers .
