Michael is a good man. I dont know the ins and out of this case but he is very good company and a very good man.

He was due (dont know if will still take place) to have an Open Day at the Al Eile Stud this weekend to raise money for the Waterford GAA.

A marvellous man and a great singer.

Always leads the way at Aintree with a rendering of Dungarvan Your a Lady or something on those lines after Al Eile's many wins in the Aintree hurdle.

More On the Run than At The Races recently though, good man Michael but caught close home.

Well i fancy Michael will be going to war with a 2 grand an hour brief against some dodo state solicitor who couldnt find his own dooodle,so with all due respect the evidence will have to be fairly compelling for the state to get a conviction.Now i dont know what he's supposed to have done but i'd be fairly confident that he'l be ok.If the unthinkable happens and poor Michael is caged,then he may well be the first prisoner to be ever lowered into  a cell.

jimeen - many a life has been ruined by others bending the rules "ever so slightly" or do you not read the papers. Where there is a profit for one man there is a loss for another, possibly for someone who decided to play by the rules.

in fairness corrution in Ireland has often meant that people ended up living in places like Jimeen

Most people and its particularly appropriate on this forum seem to be jealous of rags to riches stories.Now whatever Ryan is accused of doing,it most certainly will have not ruined anybodys life,and the very nature of Irish society is that people who get money start to make contacts,very often useful ones in business,and from that point they establish more and more power.

It's the general acceptance of this type of behaviour (the whole "sure what harm if nobody got killed") that has the country where it is today

Most of us go through life paying our taxes, obeying the law and generally struggling through on our merits, however modest our merits may be.

All I'd like to see is the justice system deal with the rich the same way it deals with the rest of.

Look at Anglo, there was as much fraud and false accounting going on there as at Enron (like that 7 billion fake 'deposit' routed through Irish Permanent), yet in our glorious republic none of the crooks involved have done so much as an hour's community service.

I've never met Michael Ryan and know nothing about the charges against him. If he's innocent, I hope he's vindicated. But if he's corrupt, he should serve his time like any other crook.

The route to quick riches is the same thing as the road to ruin in this country.

why is there so much resentment directed towards people born into humble circumstances who make it up the materialistic ladder?The reaction we often hear is that he/she must have really bent the rules to get ahead,while at the same time there is a tolerence of those born into money.Good luck to anyone who sheds the shackles of their birth circumstances.

Fred Forsey Junior, aged 42, from Abbeyside, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, is pleading not guilty to the six counts.
His trial before a jury of eight men and four women started at Waterford Circuit Court today and could last up to six weeks.
The former Dungarvan town councillor and driving instructor is denying receiving corrupt payments of €60,000, €10,000 and €10,000 from a property developer in 2006.
The developer cannot be named for legal reasons.
The payments are alleged to have been made as an inducement or reward to Mr Forsey to use his position on Dungarvan Town Council to make representations to officials and members of the county council in support of a planning application made by the developer's company.
The payments were also allegedly a reward or inducement for him to speak at a meeting of the town council in support of the development, and propose a motion to extend the Dungarvan town boundary to encompass the lands involved in the application.
In opening the case, Denis Vaughan-Buckley senior counsel for the prosecution said the Forseys went on a family holiday to Rome in August of 2006 on the date of the first alleged corrupt payment to Mr Forsey of €60,000. The court heard he told his wife the developer had paid him €30,000.
He said Fred and Jenny Forsey split up in October 2006.
The first witness in the prosecution case was local Fine Gael TD John Deasy, who said he was approached in the summer of 2006 by the property developer in Merry's pub in Dungarvan, Mr Deasy's local. He said he was asked to support the rezoning of lands outside of Dungarvan.
He said that in September 2006 Mr Forsey, then a town councillor, called him to arrange a meeting, which took place in a cafe on the quay in Dungarvan.
He told the court the meeting was specifically to do with lands for rezoning, with Mr Forsey putting to him that hundreds of jobs could be created if the lands around a mile outside of Dungarvan were rezoned for industrial use.
Mr Deasy told the court he did not back the proposals as very few if any specifics came back to him when he asked for them and that ,in his opinion, there was no substance to the claim that hundreds of jobs would be created.
In April 2007, Jenny Forsey approached him, Mr Deasy told the court.
Jenny Forsey had been married to the accused but was then separated.
Following the conversation, Mr Deasy went to the gardaí and advised Mrs Forsey to do the same, which she did, and a meeting with the gardaí was arranged.
Under cross-examination, Mr Deasy said that it was his opinion, and that it is still his opinion, that the reason (for the attempt at rezoning) was to inflate the price of the land.
Mr Deasy said he was not aware in 2007 that Mr Forsey was, according to defending Senior Counsel John Phelan, residing with another lady although he knew there were differences in the marriage. Mr Deasy said Mrs Forsey did not make any comment about her marital status.
When he heard later he was due to move to Australia, Mr Deasy asked Mr Forsey to relinquish his seat on Dungarvan Town Council.
Mr Phelan put it to the TD that he rang Mr Forsey, saying if he was him, he would not ever come back to Ireland and wishing him a good life.
Mr Deasy said this was not his recollection.
He agreed that Fred Forsey was a good councillor and that he did not feel his own position was in jeopardy from him.
The court was also told that other witnesses due to be called include the other Fine Gael TD in Waterford, Paudie Coffey, bank officials, officers from Waterford County Council and others.
The trial continues tomorrow.

Given the underlying tenets of Irish culture -one can understand how so many contrive to justify corruption.
Yes , there are differing scales of chicanery and yes , sometimes there might appear to be some collateral benefits accruing but - let's be blunt ...it's wrong at root , it's cheating , it's fuelled by greed. It corrodes decency and values like social equity and fair play.
Corruption is never a victimless crime. Inevitably, if one tolerates it in small doses one gets it in larger and larger doses .
Town council today , county council tomorrow , national government the day after.

Has Ryan been charged?

FORMER DUNGARVAN TOWN councillor Fred Forsey Jnr has been sentenced to six years in jail with two years suspended. The former Fine Gael councillor was found guilty of six counts of corruption. He was found guilty of accepting €80,000 in bribes from developers. Each offence carried a six-year sentence but the sentences will run concurrently.
Judge Gerard Griffin, passing sentence at the Waterford District Criminal Court, sitting in Dublin this morning, said that Forsey had “gravely breached the trust of the people of Dungarvan” and that his wrongdoing had been at the “medium-range of seriousness” in terms of the corruption recorded in findings of the Mahon Tribunal’s report.
The judge noted that Forsey Jnr came from a good family but said that if the development for which he accepted bribes in order to push through land rezoning decisions had actually been built at the height of the Celtic Tiger boom, it would almost certainly now be a ghost estate.
The developer who had been alleged to have given bribes to Forsey Jnr can not yet be named because of ongoing legal action.
After the sentence was handed down, Forsey’s girlfriend Karen Morrissey broke down in tears and he was hugged by family and friends before being led away to begin his jail term.

So after all the shenanigans we've seen in the upper reaches of politics and banking -we end up with a humble town councillor in the clink.
It's like a fishing fleet going to sea and returning with a bucket of sprats.

I think in Ireland you can get away with it if it's conveniently in the past. Society has changed it's opinion on 'skullduggery' and 'chancers' over the last decade. The Revenue Commissioners have made great in roads. We still get those lists appearing in the press of tax defaulters but the lists are getting smaller, the message is getting home. The next step will be more public anger about the rich and their tax avoidance schemes. The UK can fuel that and it will sprinkle over here.

Sean Quinn looks like he could go down for awhile and have to provide some of his assets to pay off his debts. The case against Sean Fitzpatrick should be confirmed soon by the DPP. Using the bank's money to lend to 10 individuals so they could then buy up Anglo shares looks like fraud to me.

I think most bankers may get off as being described as inept rather than corrupt, although in reality they could have been both. I still think the banks did not divulge to the State their full liabilities in September 2008. If that could ever be proven, surely that is fraud as well.

If Fitzpatrick has no case to answer then I think we haven't moved on and he is getting protection but I then beg to ask, by whom exactly?

Sean Fitzpatrick was non executive(some how apparently) chairman at Anglo when golden circle was formed unfortunately.
