Fought out the bumper last night at Killarney . I backed Kate in running ( early in race for her horse was pulling double from before half way ) .  Thought she gave this complete outsider ( 5/1 a place SP on here ) a cracking ride , unlucky that Nina's horse stayed a little better . Nina's horse is twice the size of Kate's .

Both were excellent in the final furlong , and I disagreed with Matt's assertion that Nina won the race essentially because she was "different gravy " or words to that effect . Nina is a one off so far , but her horse really dug in , and they were miles clear .

One of the questions in my mind is "are the girls better than the men in bumper races " .  I have lost track of the relative number game , but it seems that whatever Nina or Katie Walsh is going to ride invariably shortens up on course . I grew up watching 2 or 3 men amateurs dominating each era in bumpers ( starting with Bunny Cox ), nowadays that seems to be a thing of the past .  Any explanations ?

It's just the same effect as AP McCoy or Ruby Walsh on board in a normal run-of-the-mill - punters latch onto familiar names

what about the excellent mr pw mullins, the record breaking champion amatuer, and a legend is his own lifetime.
Report Cupwinkcook May 11, 2010 9:09 PM BST
familarity with the horses, possibly

as well as good ammunition

the girls are amatuer but are effectively retained by top stables, important part of a strong team etc

a good young male amatuer will be expected to turn pro, will have weight issues etc

these girls can eat sensibly and maintain a manageable weight without sweating and surviving on 2 cups of coffee from dawn to 4pm

Kate Harrington wouldn't be in the top 10 Irish ladiy jocks. Chappers is right Nina is different gravy.
Report Kelly May 11, 2010 9:49 PM BST
The gotchee , no idea where Kate Harrington rates in the amateur jockeys league .  My point was that in this race Kate Harrington did nothing wrong , but chappers implied she was completely out ridden by Nina .  Not true in this race .  It was the horse essentially , obviously the superior jockey helped too .

Given the choice between say P Mullins and Nina , who would forumites want on their horse ? Amswers below .

I take your point kelly but I think Nina is in a completely different league.

As for young Mullins, he doesn't get anyway near the amount of outside rides Nina gets, so I think that should answer your question.

Watch Young Mullins ride on the machine at Fairyhouse in December - how the hell did he get that beat?

RP McNarmara vastly overrated imo.
So much more attention on style over substance.
Everybody thinks he is best thing ever because he looks so good on the weld steerting jobs.

Mr RP McNamara top notch imo.
