The sport has had it's share of rogues but if this NOTW sting is what it looks like I really think this could be the end for the sport.

Whatever about some of the lower ranked players falling into the gluepot of corruption, for a millionaire multiple world champion and world no.1 to alledgedly be at it is incredible and very sad.

It strikes at the heart of what once was a great sport. It will overshadow today's final too , which was already looking to be a pretty sub standard affair in terms of what snooker needs.

If Higgins (already suspended) is really on the take then I hope they take the correct course of action and ban him for life.

Not only the world number1 but it's most respected "ambassador".
Report shaggykev May 2, 2010 1:37 PM BST
if that is all true he is toast

however how silly is he to fall for that kind of sting, its happened to that aussie fella, grobellar, fallon

all by the news of the world, the sneaky baxtards,

300k for throwing 4 frames in some "new" tournament, how did he think they'd get that kind of dust back without arousing serious suspicion
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 1:39 PM BST
**gykev, the Calzaghe "sting" was terrible but a story like this is actually important and it's important it's exposed. We have nobody like Mazer Mahmoud and his team in Ireland but I'd say he'd be useful over here.
Report shaggykev May 2, 2010 1:42 PM BST
i know that ricky but the good people in snooker didnt need this on their biggest day

it would be akin to releasing a sting on horse racing on grand national day

will be interesting to see how the beeb handle this, either way snooker has now lost a top top player
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 1:44 PM BST
I think the whole sport is done tbh.
Report shaggykev May 2, 2010 1:46 PM BST
absolutely

people will now say he threw that match against davis, rightly or wrongly, that will be the perception, an perception is the bulk of it in an open world

except irish polictics where if you are a co rr upt cu nnt, you top the poll,or a uselss cu nt but the son or daughter of a former TD, you get a seat as well

paper never refused ink. videos etc could also be edited to suit NOTW agenda.
prefer to hear higgins explanation before i make my mind up.
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 2:33 PM BST
Lol. His excuse is that he feared for his life.

did you see the video mitch? did you hear barry hearn's interview? do you know higgins has been given an indefinite suspension?
Report ChildOfMine2 May 2, 2010 5:35 PM BST
The sport is not at an end but Higgins' career must surely be. I'm shocked at him, thought he was one of the most genuine guys in snooker!
Report irish_guy_13 May 2, 2010 6:39 PM BST
just seen the vid, amazing stuff, life ban imo, and i liked the fella

Didnt look like a guy in fear of his life to me there. Has to be banned for life

Read the story and come back to us.
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 7:17 PM BST
Watch the video while you're at it.

A 6X 6 cell is the place for him now. Wrong un. Makes u wonder about his dramatic loss of form in the early noughties
Report macrocky May 2, 2010 7:26 PM BST
When i saw it i was shocked , john higggins is a clean cut family man like anyone one of us just he is a fantastic snooker player, They say they have a tape but its its the news of the world, they havent had a good headline in a while , if wrong i hope higgins sues and closes the paper down
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 7:27 PM BST
What planet are you from Macrocky. This is standard fare for NOTW. They have one big story like this at least once a month.
Report macrocky May 2, 2010 7:29 PM BST
ricky notw are gutter
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 7:29 PM BST
They don't say they have a tape. It's on the site.
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 7:31 PM BST
The are gutter and if they were wrong about this they would be shut down. IT would cost them about 10 million in damages.
Report macrocky May 2, 2010 7:48 PM BST
I hear john higgins is denying evry allegation , knowing him from what i see on tv i hope he is right and shuts down thje gutter
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 7:52 PM BST
This is very sad. The term "red handed" was invented for situations like this. Read the story. Watch the video. End of story.
Report irishro May 2, 2010 7:56 PM BST
In fairness its hard to see any defence for Higgins by simply watching the video. He did not have the look of a man under duress. Steve Davis's face said it all at start of coverage today when they discussed-he was almost in tears.
Report moneypenny May 2, 2010 7:57 PM BST

watch it then!!!
Report gentlemanjohn May 2, 2010 8:17 PM BST
Sadly, it is higgins reputation that is in the gutter along with the notw. No comeback from this, must get a very substantial ban and fine if the game is to retain any semblance of credibility. Worse than the maguire/burnett**last year and that was pretty bad
Report macrocky May 2, 2010 8:20 PM BST
Will do hemingway , i just sawe higgins statement on bbc i hope he is right and sues the a rso out of NOTW, I hear there is creative videoiing , i believe higgins, some players are iffy , i cant believe higgins is dodgy
By the way lots of firmms are very cautious about large sums of cashy being bet especially snooker would it pay someone to pay off 300grand and syill make a sizeable profit
im only asking the question
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 8:29 PM BST
This is the tip of the iceberg in snooker. It is rampant.
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 8:32 PM BST
Yeah he seems terrified all right, didn't volunteer anything, said the bare minimum and didn't further it at all. I believe him 100% now.

From the Guardian:

John Higgins [laughing]: "There is no cameras is there?"

Higgins: "Oh yeah. Frame three I'm going to lose. Yes, yes."

Higgins: "[There's] no risk, because you can miss."

Higgins: "If you start leaving, leaving and leaving chances people are saying, what's happening here? But against other players it's no problem."

Undercover reporter: "I don't know the sport that well, but what I'm saying is that you can miss one, but you can't keep missing them?"

Higgins: "You can. Yeah, yeah, you can.

Undercover reporter: "We agreed four frames during year one, right? We are agreeing the figure now. What is the figure we are agreeing?"

Pat Mooney: "300 ... agreed."

Higgins: "But then I am thinking to myself, how do I swallow 200,000 or 300,000 pounds or euros coming into my account?"

Higgins [to Mooney]: "I have got a property in Spain, I'm thinking to myself. Is there any way, if you got a small mortgage on the property or something and you can pay it off ... would they look me out if you paid it off in a lump sum?"

Undercover reporter: "So, four frames, one per?"

Higgins: "Yep"
Report macrocky May 2, 2010 8:46 PM BST
Ricky that totally different from the higgins satement so someone is lying or creative, i can see a courtcase????
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 8:48 PM BST
I'm banging my head off a desk here. Why do you think it's different? Do you expect John Higgins to come out and say "I did it" or do you think he would try desperately to salvage his career? He'll never earn from snooker again. He'll have no income in life after this. What do you expect him to do?

Honestly. If you can't work out why Higgins would lie then I don't know what to say to you.
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 8:49 PM BST

Loook risky im off tomorrow on the camino and i couldnt give a feck about nama or higgins tbh , i can live a pure life for next 24 days at least haha
Sure soccer is filthy has been found guilty many cases, tennis has been , horseracing has , has it stopped people gambling , answer no , in fact gambling on all 3 has increased .
So why should snooker be damaged , it may be as the dark smoky pool hall image is still attached
Report ricky butcher May 2, 2010 10:24 PM BST

Report ChildOfMine2 May 3, 2010 3:20 PM BST
I hope Higgins is innocent as he says he is. However, if he felt that his life was in danger and he was just putting up a front, why didn't he let Barry Hearn or whoever know what was going on? I think if he was innocent, he would surely have let somebody know!

Read an english paper today.

1/ JH and his manager flown to russia to meet a marketing bloke(s) from a russian bank wanting to do a tournament/exhibition.

2/ JH agrees as it's in the interest of the sport(also all expenses paid etc, some would say he should've smelt a rat there)

3/ When JH gets there, he realises he dealing with what he believes are two gangsters.

4/ I would promise anything to get out of the room with the two russian gangters.

5/ Family comes first, he wanted to arrive home alive and thought he was being leant on
Report Rowley Mile May 3, 2010 4:21 PM BST
^^^ not russian gangsters, gangsters in russia
Report ricky butcher May 3, 2010 4:23 PM BST
You do know the guy in the meeting in Kiev was English yeah? You've read the article, so surely you know this was organised over a number of months? Not just in Kiev on a one off?

The guy organising the deal in the hotel was English. There was only one other guy in the room who wasn't British.

read my 2nd post, why are you so obsessed, this is a farce btw
Report ricky butcher May 3, 2010 5:21 PM BST
I'm not, it's just here we have a video of somebody who appears to be caught red handed and people are hanging on to the most flimsy of excuses. It reminds me of the Tribunals.
