Going on the 5 days on the HRI site is Good to Firm. 2 days ago trainers pulling out horses because of the ground easing. No huge drying since imo. Ger Lyons said he pulled out Palazzone because the watered ground turned soft!!!!!!!(maybe an over reaction) The time based ground on the rp was Good and now suddenly it's G/F again. Any point in listening to going reports. I find Gowran particulary poor for going reports. Again like the need for professional stewards in the country is there a need for independent going reports?
Im surprised more was not made of the going descriptions at Punchestown particularly on the Thursday.
The description of good was laughable. Some of the jocks were calling it soft and even dead. R.Galway clearly overwatered and both RTE and ATR never touched on the issue.

jimeen, you havn't a clue. Why don't you try and come out with somthing positive for a change? If you check the stats you will find that Ger Lyons is a good trainer.

Ur right about Ger being in navan but his rep obviously thought it was too soft for Palazzone. Ger defo has a dislike to ground being watered but its the poor going updates which I have a problem with.

Limestone Lad - I actually know David Marnane myself and always found him to be a decent guy.Flat racing wouldnt be my favourite,i must admit but one would have to say that Marnane has made a fairly good impression so far in his career. The problem i think lies in the scarcity of racing for flat trainers and a bit like the premiership, the inability due to lack of resources to break into the top four in the list. Each year Coolmore,Oxx,Bolger and Weld fill those places with the others rarely challenging in the prestigious races.Colm O Donoghue will be a help to Marnane if he can get to use him as much as he can,im a firm believer in the theory that trainers wouldnt be half the trainers they are but for the presence of a top jockey in the yard.Im not a 100% sure that concentrating solely on flat horses is that advisable particularly as he is based in the heart of Tipperary,i just think that any kind of winner keeps a trainers name in the papers and in peoples minds. All in all i wouldnt put anybody off giving him a horse if flat racing is their game, its just that in my opinion you will always be dealing with the scraps off the big operator's tables. Now the gotchee, from past experiences i am fully aware what kind of stuff you can come up with from time to time so im not taking that clueless remark to heart. Two things about Lyons that you should know,he's under an illusion that he is already in the top tier of Irish trainers, when in fact he is miles away.Secondly the only reason he doesnt train jumpers is because he considers himself too good for that game. Now that he doesnt have Murtagh on side and will be relying on Latham primarily,we'l see exactly how good Lyons is this season. The one thing that certainly wont change no matter what happens is the opinion he has of himself and the air of confidence that he exudes.

im in kilkenny city, few showers here yesterday id say good to firm would be a fair accessment of the ground here (10-12miles from gowran)
just thought i would ad this :-)

Jimeen, you are wrong on both counts. Numerically he is in the top tier of Irish racing. Unfortunately and probably because he is outspoken he doesn't get the high profile owners he deserves and therefor doesn't get the really well bred horses. Although, I think Sheik Mohammed has sent him a couple this year.Secondly, I read somewhere that he gave up jump racing because so many of his horses got leg injuries and he became disillusioned with that game.
Furthermore, he is the most improved flat trainer that has come on the scene in the last ten years. He has overtaken the likes of Lynam, Halford, Collins and Prendergast who have the patronage of some of the best owners on this planet.
I suspect your condemnation of Lyons is fuelled by jealousy, ignorance and bar room shyte talk.. I think his record speaks for itself.

Numerically he was ahead of Prendergast. If Lyons had the calibre of owners that Prendergast has he would be champion trainer. It amazes me why lots of very clever people cannot recognise his talent.

I think he probably needed the run, but he`s gutsy and Keagan gave him a great ride. We walked the track before and after the first race and decided that the place to be was on the virgin ground on the far side. It worked to a tee. The plan now is togo for the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh and then to Royal Ascot. There should be more improvement to come - Shane Lyons, trainer's brother
A quote from Lyons after winning the Listed race at Mallow last night.
jimeen, I think this just illustrates you are clueless. You would be better keeping your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than opening it and confirming it

The Gotchee- You are a proper dope, that has been illustrated a thousand times on here,i'm not sure why i'm even replying to you,but anyway my interpretation of the quote you are using from team Lyons is firstly we have no idea whether a horse is ready or not,not a clue, hence the big drift and secondly by looking down the track we can see that we were drawn very wide so we may as well take a chance and stay far side because we have no hope if we tack across. This is the same team who decided the ground was too soft for one of their horses in Gowran last Sunday even though they were in Navan.Palazzone was the only horse throughout the day that was withdrawn due to change in ground conditions, that seems strange particularly that the decision to withdraw was made by somebody looking at ATR about 100 miles away.

sinndar001 02 May 20:11 **** sick now at this stage. Today GaryOB gave the ground as good g/f in places in Gowran, 1 hour later without any rain at race time it was Good G/Y in places. Ground on HRI for tomorrow is yielding on str8 and Good on Round. Feckin rp says Good on the str8 and G/F on round. Can we not have proper going reports. I know there is not a huge difference in the going reports but still there is a difference between yielding and good and we shouldn't have to put up with it. I probably believe the HRI going but I shouldn't have to guess. Surely time for a going stick? Altho I'd say an ivory back scratcher will is more likely.

sinndar, sympathise with you on going reports. Frankly with the preoccupation in providing safe ground I doubt horses will ever race on firm ground again. Probability of fast ground will lead to watering which in most cases leads to too much/too little water on different parts of the track. I walked Punch on Sunday and you wouldnt believe the difference between the ground on the Chase/Hdls courses.

It's a pity about watering but maybe it has to be done. An up to date and accurate going report is all is asked. The irish rp has plenty of reps on here and maybe one of them will explain the difference between the HRI and their going.
Observer, you in the Curragh tomorrow?

HRI have enough well paid employees to carry out that task but most of them are accountants and that task goes beyond using a calculator. Wont go to HQ till Guineas, cant warm to that virtual stuff till late June earliest!!
