We are well aware of Teachers and their 5 Hour days and 22 weeks a year holidays but This industrial action in Passport office is doing untold damage to the General Public with many families able to travel in many cases emigrate etc....Public servents better face facts more cuts are on the way as the country is unable to pay...i'd leave staff under 30K out of the equation but a cut of another 5% for those up to 45K and 7.5% for those in the 45 to 65K with 10% for 65K to 100K and 15% for all over 100K..........hard facts they got benchmarking when the country was booming now the countrys broke so cuts have to be implemented...
PS GO SLOW?...i thought most of them couldnt go any slower?

Thanks Joe,

Does the union not pay their members when they are striking ? I mean surely the unions would have a big war- chest from the boom ?

I think they are being very badly advised by their union bosses, this is going to back fire on them, and they will lose what little public support they may have had. The public are not going to blame the gov, they will blame the union and their members. In my opinion they should either strike or go back to work.

Toby, i would have to agree with you on seanie and the lack of interest in what he has done compared to the level of interest in the public service debate. I think that the average person can't grasp that they are directly on the line for seanie his buddys and nama for that matter, they don't think it effects them :(

I borrowed this from another forum , it is hard to deny any of it:

When the government targeted and scapegoated the rank and file public servants for savage paycuts, they seem to forget that they actually do provide the services that keep this country functioning.

So what do you expect when the 23 ministers go on 8 to 15 day junkets, when the bankers pay themselves bonuses, when NAMA give themselves pay increases before they start, advised by the very people who caused this mess in the first place, when the State Boards are filled with political cronies, when all regulations have been suspended for the past decade, when we build a monument to international tax evasion in the IFSC, when billions of tax payers money is handed over to corrupt and bankrupt banks, when the Sunday Indo et al blame the public servants, what do you really expect?

Reaction is understandable.

In this pantheon of failure, the public servants were the least of the contributors!
Report kincsem March 23, 2010 1:20 PM GMT
Yeah, but ....
.... the failures are in the past.

Now we have to pay ourselves what we are worth. That is happening in industry.
Report thegalwayman March 23, 2010 1:24 PM GMT

Report LeinsterBeliever March 23, 2010 2:33 PM GMT
It's all about realism.

There is no doubt that public servants didn't directly cause the banks to collapse but everyone jumped on board the good ship Tiger and were happy to see their house price go up.

Every sector be it public or private has or in the case of the public sector now has to face facts that as a country we aren't competitive at our current pay rates.

Undoubtedly the average public sector contributes a good days work and deserves to be rewarded for it. The failure of management and the government to manage costs and structure does not mean public servant employees are expect from pay and pension decreases. The latter being the one in my opinion which needs to be changed dramatically.

Realistically everyone in Ireland needs to accept pension and pay restructuring, the public sector can't hold the country to ransom on two fronts. Nothing happening because they are on strike and stifling any chance of a return to consistent growth by placing a massive lending burden on the country to pay for them.

I don't blame them for striking but the party is over and they have to go back to work with a hangover.
Report timberman March 23, 2010 3:38 PM GMT
Public Servents were quick enough to look for Benchmarking comparing themselves to the private sector now lets compare again and reduce wages by at least 20%
Report great grey March 23, 2010 5:01 PM GMT
the reality is that the state is borrowing approx 30% of public sector pay even after the cuts that have already been implemented. even when the economy starts to improve in a couple of years tax revenue will be nowhere near what it was during the bubble. public sector pay and pensions almost doubled in the last 8 years, which is testimony to the sheer incompetence and recklessness of the ahern era. i'm convinced there are still many poeople out there who still don't realise the scale of the bubble we were living in.

He is out of work now, but the likes of him cant say public sector are well treated as he probably made 3 times any public sector worker earned a few years ago
Tradesmen and professionals made far more than any public sector worker when times were good, noone was queueing up to be a clerk or a postman or a welfare officer then.

I think the govt must give themselves a look in the mirror and then the country will take cuts if deemed necessary.

Passport office workers are being treated disgracefully imho.

To have an employer go on national radio and "threaten" them shows the disregard this government has for the people.

Truth is that 2/3 of the passport printers are being fixed and the ban on overtime pay has meant that a backlog has occured.

This is completely the foreign affairs departments fault.

Of course its all well and good for Martin et al to go on radio and moralise about wage cuts whilst himself, harney et al go on junkets in the name of St Patrick.... a disgrace.

and as for the morons queing at the passport office.

Not many employers in the private sector offer guaranteed pensions any longer - they are too costly.

By the way I'm not getting at lower paid p.s's. Some of the staff with long service are earning ridiculous salaries compared to their younger more energetic innovative colleagues.
Report macrocky March 23, 2010 7:53 PM GMT
I see your point tony but i do think public sector workers are a easy target, you couldnt retire on a public service pension unless you are on serious money , grade 6 emloyees or management.

If i remember the rte programme on welfare fraud a few months ago it was argued there could be as much as 2 billion a year wasted in waste and fradulent and mismanaged claims annually
That would have gone a long way towards tax cuts.

There is hell to come , strikes are coming and the govt are going to have to be more innovative and intelligent in finding money as well as looking at areas like the senate, no more stupid inquiries where the lawyers/barristers clean up

Are the CPSU absolutely f**king insane.

The entire public service is at the whim of the "passport office"

My sympathy has suddenly gone out the window.

Outsource the passport office and sack them.

Why does all industrial action by civil & public service workers involve the withdrawal of services & hurting the public?
Do they not realise how self-defeatist these campaigns are?
The public suffers & public opinion against the unions grow.
That's no way to win support.
Why (for example) didn't all the staff in the passport office decide to wear sombreros or straw hats, pink t-shirts, giant ears or rubber red noses to work & continue perform as normal?
This would have had the same effect of raising awareness of their grievance, the public wouldn't suffer & they might actually get support.
Did a single member of Dail Eireann suffer personally through the passport office?
If the sombrero wearing scneme is not seen as militant enough, why didn't the passport office cancel Mary Harney's passport when she was in New Zealand?

But what really gets my goat is this.
I know someone who needed to renew his passport to get to Cheltenham. He has political contacts & he was able to obtain his passport @ 5pm on Monday 15th March.
So it appears that this industrial action is in place primarily to inconvenience the public whilst still function efficiently for those with political clout.

Trent razor.............the staff were guided by the unions.
Did it work ................Yes.
It also worked for Construction workers on sites over the years, farmers and taxi drivers.......so the secret is out upset the public and people will take you serious.
Most emergency passports were issued if the staff got enough time and as for cheltenham those without passports usually go on the boat. Very silly to book a ryanair flight without a passport.
