Amazed 4 hours before an Ireland game this is the first thread about it. Sign of the times I guess. Anyway I think Brazil should win this fairly comfortably. If they play anything like they did in their last friendly v England it could be a 3 or 4 goal defeat sadly.
Our obvious concern is the back 4-McShane everyone is aware of his defeciencies but I think if possible Stephen Kelly is an even more average full back. Shame Foley hasn't got a look in yet.

Here's hoping for a good competitive game.

Cunningham to come on at left back and score (nap)

I'm going to the match. My second Irish game in London in a matter of days. Don't think we'll get the same result as Saturday. Whilst Ireland always take friendlies seriously, teh back 4 is shocking and up front we're not much better. Plus the fringe Brazilians playing for the world cup place surely will be all out.

Have just laid Brazil at 1.48

Robinho in attack playing away aint any good!!

Also Ronaldhino being snubbed by Dunga too.

I don't think it is possible :D
McShane is atrocious
Report irishro March 2, 2010 6:36 PM GMT
True but the one difference I would make is McShane has the odd game where he actually looks like a defender-his game against the Czech Rep a perfect example. He reminds me a bit of a lower league goalkeeper playing a prem team in the FA cup!! As for Kelly can't say he ever puts in more than a 6/10 performance for Fulham or Ireland.

I fear McShane is gonna make me look really foolish tonight now :(
Report galway59 March 2, 2010 6:38 PM GMT
Id say you will be ok with McShane,he will be too busy shaming himself like normal.
Report yaboya March 2, 2010 6:39 PM GMT
'Odd' being the operative word.
That game against the Czechs was almost 4 years ago.
Bet you can't name another.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby March 2, 2010 6:43 PM GMT
Johnny Giles naming the 70 Brazil side as best ever and then struggles to name more than 2 of them and includes Garrincha :^0

Was only half-listening but thought he said 1958 WC in relation to Garrincha.

He does leave a bit to be desired now but who could replace him ? Also if he leaves Eamo will have to follow, unless they cut that umbilical cord.

Rep of Ireland: Given (Manchester City); Kelly (Fulham), McShane (Hull City), St Ledger (Preston North End), Kilbane (Hull City); Lawrence (Stoke City), Whelan (Stoke City), Andrews (Blackburn Rovers), Duff (Fulham); Keane (Celtic, capt), Doyle (Wolverhampton Wanderers). )

Brazil: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan); Maicon (Inter Milan), Lucio (Inter Milan), Juan (Roma), Bastos (Lyon); Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Felipe Melo (Juventus); Ramires (Benfica), Kaka (Real Madrid), Robinho (Santos); Adriano (Flamengo).

Gotta be a Brazil win for me here

Whelan pulled him up on Garrincha and said he was "further back (than the 70s)"
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby March 2, 2010 6:57 PM GMT
though i think Giles is a laugh. Wouldn't mind seeing Brady back.
Report reb March 2, 2010 7:02 PM GMT
He's getting dotty allright. Brady is good and tends to speak his mind. Wouldn't be surprised to see Giles still there in 5 years - handy job and v good money.
Report galway59 March 2, 2010 7:05 PM GMT
And he'l still be wearing a jacket and tie that Garrinchas father used own then if hes still on tv.
Report badger's back March 2, 2010 7:05 PM GMT
refreshing to hear our National Anthem :)
Report Fortune March 2, 2010 7:29 PM GMT
To clarify lads, Giles pulled Whelan up on Garrincha and then went on to describe what a great player Garrincha was in 58 and 62. Decent game so far?
Report BraveInca2006. March 2, 2010 7:40 PM GMT
Brazils so called superstars being well held and mostly outplayed by our team of blue collar workers. Organisation and hard work really are the vital ingredients of any football team or sports team for that matter.

I had to laugh at Dunphy calling Adriano a playboy and BOH having a good old laugh. Dunphys response "I should know!" I thought it was slightly out of order for the Herald and the (Irish) Daily Mail to put the photo of Dunphy and that young girl on the front page. Its an invasion of her privacy but i suppose if you allow yourself to be photographed like that with a drunken 60 year old man with a face like a scrotum then you cannot complain.

What is McShane good at? Does anyone know? Massive liabilty, how many grand a week is he on??? Sickens me, honestly.
Report yaboya March 2, 2010 10:09 PM GMT
Really is hard to believe that anybody pays him to play football
Report Irishlad2 March 3, 2010 12:17 AM GMT
That was the worst atmosphere I have experienced at an Irish soccer match in 20+ years. It was freezing. Stadium half empty. And Paul McShane is complete and utter **e and Kilbane is past it.
Report KK 05 March 3, 2010 8:13 AM GMT
It's hard to find a happy Kilkenny man at a soccer match - "I'd prefer a game of Junior special hurling any day!".

I take it you weren't dioing the Samba then? For a friendly it looked decent enough on the telly.
Report Irishlad2 March 3, 2010 8:47 AM GMT
KK, I'd prefer an under 12 camoige match.....

The problems last night were in part due to the fact the ground was only just over half full and so there were great masses of empty seats. There were a few small spots in the lower tier sambaing away which I'm sure the cameras focused on but honestly it was just dead.
Report KK 05 March 3, 2010 9:15 AM GMT
It can be like a fridge in there alright. Hard to get excited about it after the way we were dumped from the World Cup. Anyway, not to worry, hurling season is beginning to kick into action....(except in Tipperary obviously ;) )
Report TheScalper March 3, 2010 10:27 AM GMT
Well what do you expect - having the game at the Emirates was a stupid idea - The FAI again showing their feebleness in dealing with the Braziliam promoters
Report irishro March 3, 2010 11:56 AM GMT
Always so easy to blame the FAI isn't it?! Is it not great that we have had so many opportunities to play Brazil in recent times? What were the alternatives last night-I'm not sure we would have got more than 50k in Croker anyway. If Brazil were willing to play us who might we have ended up playing? The North have to go to Albania for a game. The FAI brought 2 friendlies to T**nd last year and the turnout was embarrassing both times. As friendlies are becoming more and more of a chore in recent years we've been lucky to get a chance to play Brazil, Germany, Holland etc. and don't forget we got Argentina opening proceedings in Landsdowne in August.
Report Eye Mall Inn March 3, 2010 12:21 PM GMT
Paul McShane's reading of the move for the second goal was more akin to what you'd see at junior football level. Nobody seemed to pass much heed either.
Report Irishlad2 March 3, 2010 12:39 PM GMT
Paul McShane is a complete liability at international level. The Brazilians just played with us in the 2nd half like a cat with a mouse.

And KK, you are right emirates does get bloody cold. Hopefully it will warm up on Satruday as I'm going to teh Burnley game.
Report KK 05 March 3, 2010 12:59 PM GMT
Now I'm jealous! That should be one to enjoy, even for a Kilkenny man.
