FORMER Limerick hurling captain Damien Reale last night confirmed his decision to quit intercounty hurling claiming he had "to stand up for what I felt was right".
Reales shock decision follows the decision of manager Justin McCarthy to cut 12 players from his 2010 squad including high-profile names as Andrew OShaughnessy, Niall Moran, Stephen Lucey, Mike OBrien, Donie Ryan and Mark ORiordan, all of whom played championship this season.
Reale has slammed the failure of management to address the problems which dogged their 2009 season and has also criticised the manner in which the axed players were accused of lacking commitment. The 28-year-old admitted it was "the hardest decision Ive ever had to make".
He revealed: "Last Wednesday, there was a meeting between the 19 remaining players on the panel, Justin and his management team, and the county board, represented by chairman Liam Linehan and secretary Mike ORiordan. Justin was talking for an hour and ten minutes, but there was no mention of the problems wed had all year, just talk of moving forward. Everything was swept under the carpet.
He does drink- allegedly ;) Been a bit outspoken towards the management too!
Think he was out for the year anyway, with a hamstring tear ?:|
Was talks too of Shaughnessy bein sick, and he was nt gonna be involved this year anyway! So dunno...

The hammering by Tipp has clearly had a massive effect. Funnily if Dublin had beaten Limerick, even a hammering in the semi final would have been seen as some sort of progress. It's all relative I suppose. It will be interesting to see how teams like Limerick, Cork, Clare and Galway handle the league next year. Will they use it to rebuild or will the hangover from this year push them further back?

What you reckon our chances in league Cailin? I think they could make a right go at it. Cats will not I suspect be putting too much into it and some of the teams I referred to could struggle and be without key players. Would be great to see them reach the final.

That price is way out anyway! ;-) Surprised flowers havent priced it up yet.
Home fixtures should give us a right chance imo.
Kilkenny will take it seriously alright though tumbles, they always do.

Tumbles, I'm not sure how you think the cats won't take it seriously given the way Cody treats it very seriously and always bloods new players who are hungry to get an opportunity to shine.

I'm not sure too many others take the league that seriously. Certainly not Clare. Dublin, however, have a great chance. And you could beat us in parnell park.

BJG...for what its worth think the reaction of players / etc is over the top..if shaughs story is true hes enough on his plate..niall moran has a reputation of dictating to management..cant be tolerated...most other players are spent forces or are average players who could be replaced by younger lads who may progess with the exposure to intercounty hurling but limerick club hurling is of a very weak standard generally...tom ryan would be a man to search under every rock ie club for players but limericks political antics at county board level would leave frank murphy in the shade so tom has no hope.....if i was justin mccarthy id treat the league like the championship even the waterford crystal trophy for that matter...if theres no progress this spring next years semi final v tipp or cork will be a deja vu of this years all ireland semi..

I get your point Irishlad. Wishful thinking perhaps on my part ;)
Still, I reckon if you boys are serious about the five then it will be more conservative approach than previously.
Parnell game should be a cracker. The drawn game three years ago and the Wals Cup final win there in 2003 were two of my best days following Dublin. I know it is sad. I will go and sit in the corner :(

There was something revealed about Justin McCarthy in the tv program previews on TV3 & RTE before the Limk-Tipp semi-final that worried me. Everyone (a Clare hurling man, a Limk fella & maybe even a W'ford fella) was going on about how Justin spent hours looking at hurleys before hurling sessions and decided which size hurley every player should take onto the field. I wonder does Aiden O'Brien spend hours looking at jockeys whips before races & then select a whip for each jockey. (Donal og comments are unnecessary) It just seems like a whole load of unproductive effort when he should be training the team or analysing the opposition. When I played hurling (quite badly I should add) I was right handed but swung left handed & as I had weak arms I liked a light hurley. I'm sure other players have their own idiosyncracies when it comes to hurley selection yet Justin was selecting hurleys for them. It's like someone telling you how to have sx with your wife.

I used to know a few people who played both and it was common enough in Kilkenny. There is GAA club in north Dublin called Man O war and they had big overlapping membership with the Hills Cricket Club but the club only has football teams, no hurling. Remember seeing one of the 70s team playing down there when I was a kid but for the life of me I can't remember his name.

Norn Iron - I play cricket down the divisions in Dublin and I help train my son's hurling team having played in my youth in Cork
can't think of anyone who currently plays both
there was a lad in Port Laoise who played Minor County football in his time and doubtless was a decent hurler as well
young lads in the Malahide and Rush area have been known to play both at underage level
you'll come across a hurler the odd time in a taverners match or if a mate brings him along coz his team are stuck who'll hit all & sundry around the place purely with hand/eye co-ordination but a decent bowler would work him out soon enough

Limerick's senior hurlers are expected to meet over the weekend to discuss recent events surrounding the new panel.
Manager Justin McCarthy caused a stir last week when omitting several big name players for the coming season - a move which led to Damien Reale stepping down in protest at the way in which the process was handled.
It is thought that some players are contemplating following Reale, while a player strike may also be discussed. :( jeez

Reasonable points and he was right to protest it, no point in throwing the baby out with the bathwather. Also, the manner of it more than anything has rubbed things up the wrong way. It's not the way to build spirit and character in the team.

LIMERICK hurling was plunged deep into crisis this Wednesday night when four more players walked away from Justin McCarthy's senior hurling panel. The latest to quit in protest are Brian Geary, Donal O'Grady, Seamus Hickey :( ffs and Wayne McNamara. As Ireland's World Cup soccer torture was unfolding in Paris, Limerick GAA officials were meeting in the Gaelic Grounds where confirmation of the latest withdrawals were made known to the executive officers. Leader Sport understands that the quartet contacted Limerick GAA chairman Liam Lenihan last evening to confirm their decision to follow Damien Reale and James Ryan out of the panel in protest at the manner of McCarthy's wholesale changes. Geary, O'Grady, Hickey and McNamara would represent a wealth of inter-county experience. Hickey was this season nominated for a GPA All-Star while Geary and O'Grady have amassed over 60 championship appearances between them. Monaleen centre-back Geary made his Limerick debut back in 1999 while O'Grady is a midfield regular since 2004. Three weeks ago, on October 28, Justin McCarthy called a meeting of the remainder of his 2009 panel to plan for the new season and it became clear that regulars such as Mark Foley, Stephen Lucey, Niall Moran, Andrew O'Shaughnessy, Donie Ryan and Mike O'Brien had all been omitted. Within days Damien Reale and James Ryan withdrew from the panel in protest. Now a further four players have departed leaving McCarthy, Brian Ryan and Liam Garvey with just 12 players remaining from the 2009 panel that was beaten by 24-points in the All-Ireland semi-final by Tipperary. Leader Sport contacted manager Justin McCarthy this Thursday morning, but he only offered "no comment". Limerick GAA chairman Liam Lenihan and secretary Mike O'Riordan were also contacted, but neither were willing to comment only to say that PRO Helen Cross would issue a statement. The brief statement has reiterated that the officers of the county board are continuing to give their full backing to Justin McCarthy. "At a meeting of the management committee of Limerick County Board it was decided unanimously to support Justin McCarthy and his management team for 2010," explained the one-line statement from the executive. Until this Wednesday's night's dramatic withdrawals it had been hoped that the fall-out from McCarthy's wholesale changes to the Limerick senior hurling panel had petered out. With the endorsement of Limerick GAA officials McCarthy, Brian Ryan and Liam Garvey had continued their progress towards assembled a new panel. Two full-strength teams lined up in Martinstown last Friday night and another trial game is planned to take place on the weekend after next. Management plan to take a break at that point until the New Year when another trial will help them select their final panel ahead of the first round of the Waterford Crystal Cup in mid-January. The planned trial on the weekend of November 28-29 would offer management an opportunity to look at a number of players that missed the earlier trials as their clubs were involved in local and provincial championships. However, this saga will no doubt take a number of twists before the next planned trials. There will, no doubt, be calls for the removal of Justin McCarthy even though he has been afforded the backing of all Limerick GAA chiefs. Back in the summer of 2008 when McCarthy lost the support of the Waterford players, he resigned. Over 30 per cent of McCarthy's initial 2010 panel of 18 have now walked out and that was after his initial clearout of another 30 per cent of the 2009 panel. Just 12 members of the 2009 panel remain and the focus will now turn in their direction.
Wat a shambles this is turnin into :(

A bit rich fellows walking out of their county like that..McCarthy was right to get rid of most of those he did...beaten 23 points in an all ireland semi for gods sake..who do these players think they are...obviously someone is orchesrating all this ...McCarthy might as well forget about Limerick and let them continue to slip further away from the better teams and receive plenty more bad beatings..at least the players will have got their way (selfish gits)!

100% correct
But from wat i understand its the manner in which he did it is causing the hassle! He never even gave them a phonecall to tell them they were off the panel- they read it in the paper! Thats where the hostility is comin from imo

The Leader has its ears close to the ground....this was posted on the website yesterday!! "Hurling panel controversy peters out" THE fall-out from Justin McCarthy's wholesale changes to the Limerick senior hurling panel appears to have petered out. And, it appears that the players have accepted McCarthy's decision to cull a significent number of the squad for 'disciplinary' reasons.

Is there something in the water in Munster hurling training sessions. Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Clare. All at it. Only the Kerry hurlers seem to be interested in playing hurling for their county.
I guess the player strife is the reason Munster hurling has been so successful the last 4 years. :-P

Limerick hurling dealt another severe blow LIMERICK hurling was dealt another severe blow this afternoon with the news that four more players have walked away from Justin McCarthy's senior hurling panel. It is understood that Tom Condon (Knockaderry), Gavin O'Mahony (Kilmallock), Dinny Moloney (Doon) and Stephen Walsh (Glenroe) all made contact with County Board chairman Liam Lenihan today (December 31, 2009) and officially withdrew from the senior hurling squad - it has also been reported that none of aforementioned players were pressurised into making this decision. It is understood that all four players have decided to withdraw their services because of a growing disillusionment with the senior hurling set-up. Although club delegates voted in favour (70-54) of retaining the services of Justin McCarthy as manager at a County Board meeting on Thursday, December 17 and Patrickswell's John Tuohy was added to the senior hurling management team as a selector last week this latest development leaves the Cork man in a difficult position with Limerick's first competitive game of the 2010 season just 25 days away - on Sunday, January 24 Limerick will face the winners of the Cork/UCC clash in a Waterford Crystal Cup quarter-final. On Wednesday, October 28 Justin McCarthy effectively dropped 12 players from his senior hurling panel while eight more, among them some of the most distinguished hurlers on Shannonside, walked away soon after in protest. Now, with a further four players electing to withdraw their services, only six players remain at McCarthy's disposal from the 30 named for August's ill-fated All-Ireland semi-final clash with Tipperary in Croke Park: Paul Browne (Bruff), Paudie McNamara (Murroe-Boher), David Breen (Na Piarsaigh), Brian O'Sullivan (Kilmallock), Graeme Mulcahy (Kilmallock) and Dave Moloney (Blackrock). The following 24 players are no longer available for selection (based on the 30 players named to face Tipperary in Croke Park): Brian Murray (withdrew), Damien Reale (withdrew), Stephen Lucey (dropped), Mark O'Riordan (dropped), Seamus Hickey (withdrew), Brian Geary (withdrew), Mark Foley (dropped), Donal O'Grady (withdrew), Gavin O'Mahony (withdrew), James Ryan (withdrew), Ollie Moran (retired), Andrew O'Shaughnessy (dropped), David Bulfin (retired), Damien Cosgrave (dropped), Tom Condon (withdrew), Denis Moloney (withdrew), Niall Moran (dropped), Stephen Walsh (withdrew), James O'Brien (withdrew), Wayne McNamara (withdrew), Donncha Sheehan (dropped), Donie Ryan (dropped), Mike O'Brien (dropped) and Eoin Foley (dropped).

Limerick have selected a three-man appointments committee to choose the next senior hurling manager.
Justin McCarthy's two-year term came to an end officially when Limerick bowed out of the All-Ireland Championship at the hands of Offaly last Saturday, although he may re-apply for the post.(Dont even f00kin think about it ydc) [>o]
Paudie Fitzmaurice, Damien Quigley and Jim Woulfe are the men who will find the new manager after being chosen to do so at a county board meeting on Tuesday night.
Killeedy clubman Fitzmaurice was an All-Ireland winner with the Treaty county in 1973, while Quigley, from the Na Piarsaigh club, was an All-Star winner in 1994.
St Kieran's man Woulfe, now residing in Cork, is chief executive of the Dairygold Co-operative Society.
Clubs have been asked to submit nominations for the position with the closing date Friday 23 July.
However, the three-man appointments committee will not be restricted to names nominated by clubs.

Tommy O'Brien and Nicky Quaid were standout players last night for Limerick, defense was dodgy but with Hickey, O'Mahoney, Reale, Sean O'Brien from the Well, McCarthy from Blackrock who is going to be a top player, Dinny Moloney and maybe O'Rourke also i am not worried at all. Declan Hannon for some insane reason was in wing forward where he got no ball, play him either centre back or centre forward, top prospect. Kevin Downes was excellent when he came on, again why did he not start?? Shane Dowling, Sean Tobin, Graeme Mulcahy, David Moloney we have some super talent at our disposal. Throw in a few old lads like as stated Reale, Geary, Niall Moran we will be a decent outfit again. Personally Steve McDonagh and TJ Ryan as a duo would be my choice. The future is not that bad after all looking at the dross out there bar Kilkenny and Tipp on their day. Waterford, Galway and Cork look extremely average for me also.

FORMER Cork All-Ireland winning manager Donal O'Grady is poised to become the new Limerick senior hurling manager. While there has been no confirmation from Limerick GAA officials it is understood that O'Grady's name will be put before the clubs of Limerick in the coming days when a special County Board meeting is scheduled to ratify the new management team. This Monday evening the three-man Independent Appointments Committee brought their two-month search for the county's new hurling maestro to an end when Donal O'Grady began to assemble his backroom team. The 56-year-old Cork native met with potential selectors in the Charleville Park Hotel. Former Limerick hurling heroes Ciaran Carey, Pat Heffernan and TJ Ryan are all understood to be in line for positions as selectors. The trio of former players were all in the Limerick team that lost the 1994 All-Ireland final to Offaly. Carey and Ryan were among the initial nine nominations from the clubs for the position of manager. Heffernan has previously served as manager of the Kerry senior hurling team. The Independent Appointments Committee of Damien Quigley, Paudie Fitzmaurice and Jim Woulfe set about their task after the July monthly meeting of the Limerick County Board. It was always within their remit to source a manager from outside those nominated by the clubs and from the outset Donal O'Grady was rumoured as a potential successor to Justin McCarthy. Earlier this month Donal O'Grady appeared to distance himself from the Limerick role: "I haven't spoken to anyone in Limerick. And nobody has spoken to me. I'm aware of those rumours, but that's all they are". Donal O'Grady has recently retired as principal of the North Monastery CBS in Cork city and is a prominent member of the St. Finbarr's club in Cork with whom he won several county titles throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Donal O'Grady was also an outstanding inter-county full-back. O'Grady captained the Rebels to a second consecutive National Hurling League in 1981 before winning his first Munster title in 1982. In 1984 O'Grady starred in a campaign which saw Cork beat Offaly in the All-Ireland final. O'Grady served a selector for one year in 1986 when Cork won another All-Ireland title. He then managed Cork in 2003 and 2004. During his first year in charge he handed inter-county debuts to John Gardiner, Tom Kenny, Ronan Curran and Setanta Ó hAilpín. Cork duly won the Munster title, but lost the All-Ireland final to Kilkenny by three points. For 2004 O'Grady tempted Brian Corcoran back out of retirement after Setanta Ó hAilpín departed for Australia. That season Cork lost the Munster final to Waterford, but plotted a course to the All-Ireland final through the qualifiers before beating Kilkenny to the McCarthy Cup. O'Grady resigned in the wake of that victory, but has worked as a pundit on RTÉ's The Sunday Game while also working as a columnist for the Irish Examiner.
