After huge success of hedging BF ban by irish bookies..trial is to be extended and possibilty of it becoming a permanent way of doin biz for irish books is very much on the cards.....fears of BF mobile ect been used seem unfound as all books want this system to work.

I was at Leopardstown a few days over Christmas and between the entry fee and the rip off odds offered by the layers its no wonder the game is leaking paying customers . As for the Tote - words fail me.
Report Win only - Sp only January 2, 2010 12:03 PM GMT
rip off odds? day i was there plenty were betting more than fair, especially on the rails
Report Blessington January 2, 2010 1:04 PM GMT
:^0 Ha Ha good one Win SP....We thought at first you were serious.

First race at Leoapardstown on St Stephens Day KING BASTION 12/1 and a 148% overound in a 12 horse field Betfair S/P 204/1

And then you will hear a fella telling you what VALUE they had on King Bastion if they got 16/1 :^0
Report crouchingtiger1 January 2, 2010 1:07 PM GMT

TIGER....Yeah but the point is why guys think they got VALUE just because they got a higher price off one than what the rest of the so called legal m@fia price up. :0

An even worse example imo (if it is possible to find one) was the firwst winner on the 3rd day Mr. Whizz.
returned clear 7/1 3rd fav (so as in old bookmakers terms of reference the 3rd horse that a bookmaker should be setting out to lay after laying the first 2 in the market) it was backable to good money on here at 16/1 and 3/1 a place returned 13.6 and 3.65 a place.

The overround was 170% on the race.
At leat bookmakers could claim that Kings Bastion would not have been laid even if anyone put another nought on the end of it. You could not say that about Mr. Whizz. That was simply on course bookmakers manipulating the market. Good luck to them, they will need it all
Report moneypenny January 2, 2010 1:39 PM GMT
Some examples of the rip off from Tramore

The fonze 12/1, bsp 26/1
Maryiver 12/1 , bsp 28/1
Sciatin 25/1, bsp 98/1
Blank hand 12/1, bsp 22/1
Carrig Cottagw 14/1, bsp 34/1

To be fair to them, probably 9 out of 10 people on course dont have Betfair mobile, and if they dont have it, they dont know so they back the best price on course.

Harchibalds chase debut in Punchestown, 11.5/12 on here, every book 6/1 on course, one goes 7/1 and has a group around him almost straight away.

You could quite easily find probably 10 markets a day where the price is bigger with a bookie than on here.. yet people still back here without checking the books because Betfairs ad say "20% better odds."

Like me, I'd back best price on oddschecker and Betfair without checking a rake load of independents because I dont have the time, I might be backing something at 6/4 when I could get 13/8 with some joe soap not on oddschecker. Most people arent mugs, they think theyre getting the best price without knowing all the information.

PS. No Irish on course bookie, or indeed high street bookie, will lay 200/1 in a maiden.. FFS we'd have a field day. 25/1 shots are limited to €15 early doors never mind 200/1 anyway it wouldnt make a difference.
Report Blessington January 2, 2010 1:54 PM GMT
CLOSURE....The course Bookmakers seem to still think that punters are still mugs and while those who are going racing to bet probably are.

But there never going to attract the new punters to the racecourse to bet offering those overounds.

Surely these guys must realise their just digging their own graves for course bookmaking with their constanly underpricing.

But I suppose they must see that themselves with the lack of young people at the racecouses these days or betting with them. :(

The Racing Post describe English bookmakers as Santa Clause compared to the Irish ones.

Personally I think its the Irish punters who bet on course to me are the Santa Clauses, but there you go. :^0 ......Cheers

Report Biodiesel January 2, 2010 7:22 PM GMT
would the PC charge have anything to do with it?? I dont be backing daily but it looks like theirs less liquidity than 2 months ago.

What % of liquidity were on course bookmakers putting on here.

Report Blessington January 2, 2010 8:36 PM GMT
BARRY.....Your making it a million times harder with those overounds.

You never replace the old guys who are fading away and replace them with the new kids coming through who bet on the likes of football everyday with those overounds.

All those guys who back winners like King Bastion at 12/1 when Betfair were running 208/1 are guys who are going to be lost forever when their mates tell them what price they would have got sitting at home in front of the fire.........

How many more customers can your business aford to lose these days? ...Not many more I would think.

The amount of guys even on here who understand overounds compared to ten years ago probably has increased million-fold and I'm sure there not the only punters who have wised up.

You either have to become more competitive or even LOOK to have become more competitive unless you want to see your business die a long slow death.

Becoming or looking more competitive could start with putting up more realistic prices on the outsiders especially at the big meetings which you should be using as your showcase not as ammunition for ridicule by the RACING POST like this year Leoparstown Christmas meeting has turned out...... imo......Cheers

Just in case anyone thinks I believe the on course guys in Irealnd have it easy here is a post I wrote on the other forum earlier. It was in response to an English bookmaker callnig for the joes in England to adopt the Irish model thinking that was the answer

I guess what I am saying is that the Irish ring had their fate in their own hands. Exchanges in Irealnd had not taken off, the liquidity was a pittance even at the big meetings. Instead of nipping it in the bud and protecting what was in many cases a vibrant ring they foolishly left bet daq in and the rest is history.
Irish racing is not worth a fa rt without a betting ring but yet that is what it is faced with. If people think that betting to 180% and returning horses at 12/1 that are freely available at 200+ on the exchanges is the answer then good luck to them. I can assure you it isnt.

Keeping money in the ring might have some value short term but I am only helping the initial query not to take any lead for mthe ring in Ireland. The damage done there is irreperable.
The Exchanges bled it dry and the fixed odds firms are not willnig ot make up the shortfall, the bookies are all skint as are 99% of all the punters.
Report barry2 January 2, 2010 8:55 PM GMT
Bless i understand were u are coming from, most of the shorter priced horses are nearly the same as the exchange and most bookmakers are not really interested in laying the bigger priced ones esp as it is going to be each way.The on course bookmakers turnover is down about 35 % and his overheads are only down 5 %There are no new bookmakers coming in but plenty dropping out .
