this site has an easy set by step process for those baptised as catholics in infancy to sever those ties with the catholic church which still claims them as members.

in the light of yesterdays report on their complicity in child abuse and consistent attempts at covering up abuse allegations. take a stand, all this takes is one letter, send them a loud and clear message.

Their corruption and moral bankruptcy can be hidden no longer.

We heard today about the priest who gave swimming lessons in his private pool in Crumlin. ( No swimming trunks required)
Well , the fish is one of the symbols used for the Christian church so I suppose that made a weird kind of sense . :^0

just let priests marry

this one rule has caused so many problems-

vubiant you'd be the sort of man to know the statics

what is the perecntage of priests to paedos
and how does that correlate with the general public
ie. man to paedo

such a shame, but lets not all tar all priests as such- they are some real bloody decent ones out there and dont deserve the flak they get

They new the vocation involved celibacy if it was a problem for them leave.Instead these people if you could call them that thought they were above the people because there presumed position in society. Most of them came from fairly welltodo backgrounds and thought they could walk on the ordinary common people. To hear that the law of the land at the time turned a blind eye to it comes as no surprise as a lot of them think there better than the majority of people as well.
Report anfeild November 27, 2009 5:29 PM GMT
Those involved should be pursued by the full extent of the law. No matter how much money or time it takes. They deserve to be locked up they are just animals.

all well and good but Stevie p i see you stuck this up in chit chat as well

you shouldn't be encouraging people to give up their religion even if they are non practicing

i am a non practising catholic and could be a candidate for filling out one of those forms but not sure if im comfortable being shown it on a gambling forum

ps. i too am horrified and sickened by what those people have done and its the main reason why i dont believe in the catholic hierarchy

just dont think this is the right place for that

On the issues raised by**gykev- of course priests should be allowed to marry (as in the early church) and in most other religious groups.
That would not eliminate paedophilia ( it has cropped up as well among married clergy and laity ) but it would surely reduce it considerably .
I don't have any statistics to hand to compare groups but I'd be surprised if someone has not done some work in this area -or if not ,it is going to be done fairly soon . We can hardly get enough information on this matter .
But as has been pointed out , the real mega-scandal is not that paedophila predation occurred [ that's not a scandal in itself ] but that people who had set themselves up as moral arbiters covered it up , lied , perverted the course of justice and facilitated the commission of further crime ( which makes them criminal accomplices). The hypocrisy involved in this institutional treachery would take one's breath away if we did not already have the historical record that shows that the R Catholic Church is top of the premier league when it comes to venality and corruption.
The complicity of the state apparatus ( as shown in the Ryan report) and of the top level of the Garda Siochana shows us again what a decrepit state we have -we have a republic in name only .
Handing so many of our institutions in health and education over to the RC church has wrought havoc on many citizens and allowed them free rein to infect the minds of millions of young people with their warped teachings about sexual matters. They cowed and bullied people and children into submission -and when these children grew up was it any wonder that they would meekly defer to the interests of their tyrannical masters ? Think of Brendan Corish -''I;m a catholic first and a socialist second'' , think of Bertie Ahern and his connections with All Hallows , think of Michael Woods transferring millions due in compensation to abuse victims from church to taxpayer.
It's beyond time for this wretched era of church hegemony to be ended once and for all.

Whats this got to do with Irish Sports. Is child buggery a sport in Ireland??
Report Vubiant November 27, 2009 6:12 PM GMT
Priests swimming with naked kids , swimming coaches abusing their charges -
yeah definitely a connection with swimming.
We also have a special kind of stroke in Ireland where we have reached Olympic standard -......the political stroke .

thread was removed from chit chat.
i dont mean to cause anyone offence.
i am not suggesting anyone gives up their religion , i am putting forward a simple solution for those that want to.
i dont use any other function on the internet that allows free debate bar here , hence while i felt compelled to post it.
again no offence intended , nor is it a swipe at the catholic church.
this is a tragedy and i am convinced by todays report that it is on an epic scale.
i think all the people of ireland , north and south need to stand up and demand to know the truth.

Lads - like any group of people you care to mention - teachers / bankers / sportsmen / punters / doctors / farmers or whatever - there will be a % of them that are rotten apples - its the same with priests . We have a good one in my parish - he'll talk sport politics history with the best of them and will always be welcome here - My advice is take everyman on his merits and dont judge him on others failings.

Hard to know why the so-called Papal Nuncio is still in the country .
Citizens of the Republic of Ireland have been attacked and damaged by a shower of perverts in the Roman Catholic Church for which this individual is a key representative and link to the Vatican .
If I was Taoiseach this guy would be on his way to Dublin Airport so fast his feet wouldn't touch the ground.
Report Trent Reznor December 2, 2009 10:49 AM GMT
There was a tradition amongst Irish families of 'good standing' to offer a child to the church.
It was considered the proper thing to do.
However, instead of the hard working or intelligent son or the attractive or vivacious daughter, Irish families gave the odd boy or the plain girl that they would have no chance of marrying off.
(A reference is made to this practice in an episode of Fr Ted)
These entrants to the institutions of the church were seriously flawed to begin with.
However, instead of weeding out these evildoers, the church covered it up.
It shouldn't be a surprise as all politicians stand up for korrupt politicians, footballers stand up for ch€ating footballers & gardai stand by cr00ked colleagues.
What makes this particularly shocking & unacceptable is that the church as an organisation is supposed to stand for riteousness.
The Catholic church does not set itself apart from any other profit making organisation that is merely there to ensure it's continued profitability.
Report Trent Reznor December 2, 2009 10:52 AM GMT
badger's back,
Your last point is like saying that you feel sorry for German's who would use the holocaust as a reason for leaving the Nazi party.

What happened is totally unacceptable & is not what the Catholic church is supposed to be about.
If people tolerate this, then they will accept anything.
