All you Cork, Pats, Sligo and Galway fans can relax. Apparently the play off is between Drogs and Bray because Derry submitted incorrect accounts and have been relegated. Nothing to play for tonight.

Giant - Nothing has been decided yet. FAI are meeting the Derry Board tomorrow

I was just posting what TV3 were reporting earlier. Doesn`t look to be confirmed but it appears just a case of crossing the t`s etc. Real shame for the league. Kenny to Pats I`d imagine.

sad news, great club too
Report Kriskin November 6, 2009 11:43 AM GMT
The man who is the current Chairman should never been in this position. Not qualified to run a Football Club. They were spending money they couldn't afford. i.e training trips to Spain, £1000 per week for some players. WTF it's only Irish football. It had to end up this way
Report MALAY November 6, 2009 12:17 PM GMT
agreed kriskin, but the english premier league is the same, once one goes in there, the banks will put the squeeze on another half dozen.
FIFA need to get a grip of that league, have they not been watching world events for the last 18 months ?

Given todays developments, Why are Derry trading as low as 2.2 here AWAY to Dundalk tonight?

Absolute madness!
Report Eye Mall Inn November 6, 2009 3:59 PM GMT
Cos all of Dundalk's players haven't trained this week apparently. You gotta love the LOI.
Report Toto82 November 6, 2009 4:12 PM GMT
But Dundalk released a statement to the contrary .. very true though, only in the LOI could there be so much uncertainty regarding what was at stake in just about every game tonight

More than that to it EMI.

Dundalk a truly incredible price tonight. Whats the story here?. If the odds are borne out on the pitch there should be a "stewards" enquiry.

You imagine if you were a Derry player you see this game as your last chance to show you deserve a decent contract somewhere for next season and would go out there and burst a gut.

Whats the point anyway in taking it easy tonight when you know your off for the next few months.

But we see :0
Report Monte Christo November 6, 2009 6:10 PM GMT
Relegation is the least of our worries.

From what i have seen and heard there might not even be a Derry City Football club as we know it next season. It's an absolute joke the sums of money which were spent with no concern at all.

The current board of Derry City could not run a bath.

Hopefully now the league will realise that the idea of full-time football in this country is an impossible ideal.

Very sorry to hear that. I cant even imagine what it would feel like for that to happen to my club. Sincerely hope you survive and are allowed into the Irish league for the sake of your loyal fans. Maybe even see you again in the Setanta cup.
Report Monte Christo November 7, 2009 5:56 PM GMT
Thanks GS.

Apparently there will be a meeting this week to see if we will be allowed into the 1st division but the signs are not good.

The board members will need to keep a low profile in the city as there is an awful lot of anger here.

Fans have forked out around £ 55k for season tickets for next year and that money is gone.
Report Giant Strides November 7, 2009 6:11 PM GMT
That`s dreadful stuff Monte. A lynch mob would be too good for them. What would your personal preference be? Div one or the 2nd tier up North?
Report Monte Christo November 7, 2009 6:17 PM GMT
Definitely want to stay in LOI.

Far too much baggage in the Irish League for my liking.

Are you a bohs fan by the way ?
Report Giant Strides November 7, 2009 6:29 PM GMT
I am indeed. Good times for us now, but still in a very precarious position with a lot of in- fighting and uncertainty about our long term future. Actually probably more likely to see you in the First Div in a few years! :(

Hi Folks

Just thought I would print off the FAI statement for you all

The Board of Management of the Football Association of Ireland today (November 7) took the decision to terminate Derry City Football Clubs contract to participate in the League of Ireland.

The decision to terminate is based on the failure of Derry City FC to comply with the terms and conditions of the Participation Agreement, in particular their breach of clauses 8.2, 8.3.1, 8.3.4, 8.3.5 and 8.3.6 of that contract.
The Board of Management of the FAI reached its decision following statements from FAI personnel that Derry City FC had admitted to them at a meeting of November 4 (held at the request of Derry City FC), to holding second unofficial contracts with its players. There is contractual evidence to substantiate this.
Subject to the ongoing cooperation of Derry City Football Club being forthcoming, the Board has agreed that an FAI delegation will, in the coming week, meet with Derry City FC and the various other stakeholders to consider how Derry City Football Club may participate in senior football in the League of Ireland next season, at some level other than in the Premier Division. This of course will be subject to the normal licensing process.
The forthcoming Setanta Sports Cup match on November 10 involving Derry City FC has now been postponed, pending discussions with the Irish Football Association, through the Setanta Sports Cup Committee.
On the basis of todays decision Drogheda United will now play Bray Wanderers in the Premier Division play-off on Tuesday, November 10.

And this is the statement from the club made tonight

Representatives of the Board at Derry City Football Club to include Pat McDaid Chairman Joe W Doherty Club Secretary with Club Solicitor Desmond Doherty attended a hearing today with of FAI Board. We have previously requested the hearing be adjourned and formally objected to the hearing before it got under way. Both applications were rejected. At the conclusion of the hearing we were presented with a 6 point decision after being kept waiting in a room for over 2 hours without explanation. We were told by the FAI we have no appeal against the decision made, We were refused sight of any documentation in advance of the hearing and during the hearing. The only document produced was incomplete as was provided to us at the end of the hearing with the decision. The hearing was oppressive and in our view was like a witch hunt. The said decision was already predetermined and in our view a hidden agenda exists within the FAI in relation to Derry City Football Club as demonstrated by their behaviour today. The decision today has devastating consequences for this Club but we intend to address these consequences urgently. We are currently exploring any possibility of any type of appeal procedure within the FAI or via a court of law in Dublin or Belfast. We have not be presented with any evidence of any wrong doing on behalf of the Club or any one, or any organisation associated with the Club. It is our respectful view that the Board of the FAI should be ashamed of themselves in presiding over a completely unfair process which shows a complete lack in respect to us, our players, manager, staff, club volunteers and fans. The FAI refused to supply us with the monies we are legally and legitimately due as a result of finishing 4th in the Premier League. The FAI have also said they are considering what to do in relation to the monies we are due and owed in relation to our participation in European Soccer this season.

Not sorry to see the back of him Giant tbh. While he done ok on the pitch there was a lot of negative stuff which sullied the good name of the club and we'll be better off without him in the long run me thinks.
Very sad to see the mess Derry are in.A real LOI club that will be a big miss to the league but i suppose a line had to be drawn because the league is becoming a farce lurching from one crisis to the next.
Good luck to the Derry lads & hopefully they'll be back soon.

...and for the THIRD time, (yes folks) the 3rd time Galway Utd have had the skins saved by actions elsewhere.

One: in '84 or 85 they got a soft, very soft UEFA Cup spot by reaching the FAI Cup final, Shamrock Rovers had won the double, all the westerners had do DO was get past the semi-final.

TWO: remember the setting up the new National League format? Galway (mysteriously) overcame Dundalk to gain a Premier League spot. This is the club folks that got 900 (900!) for an Premier League tie with Shamrock Rovers (and about 300 of that was visiting fans).

Three: now this as they and Drogs were to have competed for a Premier Division play-off. They been saved; yet again!

tv rights & replica shirts

2 money spinners for cross-channel clubs that don't work over here

points that haven't been mentioned in the whole wages explosion scenario :

the cost of living in Dublin and to a lesser extent the rest of the country in the boom

your average plumber/brickie/plasterer was earning a fortune in the boom
however in the boom, turnstile revenue remained the same

so clubs were reacting to external influences when handing out contracts
these lads wouldn't have gotten 3000 a week playing for Colchester
the money simply wasn't being generated so they borrowed

league of ireland is the poor relation versus gaa/rugby and obviously english and continental soccer

the fai will have to subsidise the league from international ticket sales and tv rights if they want the league to remain in existence as a breeding ground for professional soccer players
