Going to post these periodically and these are my favourite racing moments personal to me, so here is the first ,following the 1992 Derby in which Dr Devious beat St Jovite two lengths they then had the re match in the Irish Derby and amazingly both the first and the second broke the course record despite the runner up being beaten twelve lengths, such an amazing performance. Enjoy
And then they had another thriller in Irish Champion when Christy Roche just seemed to ease off in the dying strides, perhaps wary that he was in danger of bumping his old rival?

This next one is just a great memory for me, having gone to London on Arc Day to watch Everton away at Tottenham I decided to back my horse and tape the racing and watch it late on that Sunday evening having had a mere ten pound each way on my selection at 66-1 each way, Everton as usual let you down with Tottenham getting a late winner, but what a surprise when I put the recording on to watch my 66-1 only go and win the Arc.

So here is the story with this racing moment of mine, I was going into Wetherby this day and said to my wife that I thought Barton Bank was a certainty especially getting the weight allowance and with a possible uncontested lead, 10-1 was taken before setting off, anyway a man in his country clothing turned and looked right down on me and simply said " Dont be silly, its got no chance " After the race I looked and looked but for the rest of the meeting he could not be found.

This memory was excellent, I went to this Arc and also for Dalakhani's but its this one that has the memory, I had backed Sakhee at 10-1 after his Juddmonte win and was in the stands having drank a little more than I expected, seeing Sakhee cruising I stood up and shouted " Go on Frankie when your ready " little did I realise that it was only the false straight and I thought oh dear now I am going to look more of an idiot than normal, however this was the best winner of an Arc I have ever seen and really had no need to worry and a nice evening in Paris thanks to this super super horse.

This time for hurdlers was fantastic, just very rare to get three or four top hurdlers at the same time and then we have this race which is the best Champion Hurdle for me we have seen, three fantastic horses, two hardcore champions and another with brilliance on his day. Side story on this one, I was told Hardy Eustace was going to hose up in the Stayers Hurdle early in the season, jumped on at big prices, next thing you know he is thirty three to one and running in the Champion Hurdle, my bets down ante post and then we got treated to this.

Best memory for me, among many in a lifetime of racing, is being at Ascot in July 1986 For Dancing Brave winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. They went a million miles an hour for most of the race with the two pacemakers going besderk up front.
But the sight, and crowd noise that accompanied it, of Dancing Brave cruising up with Eddery looking across will live with me forever.
The horse had actually looked in a bit of bother 5 furlongs out when short of room but Eddery had great nerve and briefly rode him for a few strides to obtain a better postion into the straight. After that, well, the horse was miles better tha a class field - although he did tire in the final 100 yards.
A great, great day which came just 48 hours after I had been out with my wife of 35 years for the very first time!
Incidentally, I have just realised that the race came only three days after Prince Andrew (as was) had married Sarah Ferguson!!!
Good thread, which I can't resist adding to. Best memory for me, among many in a lifetime of racing, is being at Ascot in July 1986 For Dancing Brave winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. They went a million miles an hour for

Many years ago I used to enter the AOL tipping competitions for Ascot and Cheltenham under the user name Bahoor, managed to win the first two and second in the third so did really really well, one horse I tipped up was a horse called Flashmans Papers which won the Windsor Castle at 100-1 for me which virtually won the Ascot competition on day one, looked everywhere to try and find that race but cant find it anywhere, anyone finds it please post it up, be great to see that again

I have never ever been a fan of Best Mate though I never doubt the achievement of the three Gold Cups, to put him in perspective at his very best Best Mate would be ten pounds behind Imperial Commander and fifteen pounds behind Kauto Star, so with all the hype around him each year it pleased me no end to see what Paul Carberry did at the end of this race.

The race time for St Jovite's Irish derby was wrong, and never corrected.
My best memory was Dr Devious winning the 1992 English Derby, watching it on a 14" TV brought into work. Nick Mordin in the Sporting Life Weekender wrote an article before that Derby and his four possibles finished 1,2,4,11. That started me analysing thoroughbred pedigrees to find out why one brown horse was better than another brown horse. Now I have two mares, a 2yo in pre-training in France, and sold a 4yo to Australia (landed in Melbourne yesterday).

Some gold-dust after-timing there from Manuel and I'm very surprised he hasn't had a few hoofs to the bálls & general bellendry from the usual suspects, who refuse to believe anything...but I can 100% attest that everything he's said is TRUE - they're his lifetime's achievements
He still won't STFU about them decades later!
Needless to say, The Bash Street Kids will routinely assume we're the same person, but as ever...they're wrong
PS - I'm sure Nevison did have some involvement with Flashman's Papers though I couldn't find any citations of that...but what I did find interesting which I didn't know was that it was bred at Cliveden Stud.

So this next one holds a comical meaning to me as well a racing one, in 1984 myself and HERBIE off here decided we would go to Haydock for that years Vernon Sprint, what is now the Haydock Sprint Cup, we had no money and used a local saveaway ticket for the buses in Liverpool to get us to Prescot were we would then catch a bus to Haydock, problem was the saveaway did not cover that area, so we decided to let everyone at the bus stop get on before us and just flash the saveaway although meaningless to the driver who hopefully will not notice and then we are ok, the bus turned up and we waited at the back of the bus stop, thing is nobody put their hand out and the bus went past without stopping leaving us to miss the races and head back to Liverpool, the race that day was won by a grey horse i really really likes called Petong who beat a stellar field having previously won that years Wokingham and Stewards Cup off top weight, enjoy.

This one of my very earliest near misses, this is the 1984 Arc De Triomphe, I had a bet ante post on the French Filly Northern Trick and got 25-1, she then went off on the day as the 9-4 favourite from memory, just a case of hitting the crossbar though for me.

I should've mentioned that many of the old timers on here will know the Cliveden Stud colours as Louis Freedman...owner of the excellent Reference Point and one of those old-fashioned owner/breeders, typical of Henry Cecil patrons back in the day like Jim Joel, Charles St.George, Lord Howard de Walden etc.

This was my biggest win in horse racing terms, not really one for putting huge amounts on horses, always kept to 100.00 maximum bet and normally a lot less, on this day I had done 3x5ew doubles and a 5ew treble, The first horse was a horse called Mass Rally who went and won a York competitive sprint at 14-1, giving me 75.00 onto the next of the three horses, which was Scatter Dice in the Cesarewitch at 66-1, just hoping to get a place if I was honest and then the following happened, just so you know the last of the three got hammered so just an each way double which for a forty quid outlay returned 5400..ish, by the way Scatter Dice I think was drawn around 33 in the Cesarewitch field so virtually the outside of them all.

I was at Royal Ascot in 2014 and was so lucky to witness the victory of Kingman, didn't back him as couldn't see any reason why he should beat Night Of Thunder after the 2000 guineas, that said the real memory for me was standing at a certain angle and just watching Kingman unleash that fabulous turn of foot, he went just as he got in my eyeline and what a burst that was, enjoy.

I went to my very first Charlie Hall Chase day at Wetherby in 1992 and in all the years since I have only missed three, this one as far as betting goes was the best, this race had a questionable couple at the head of the field and the rest were not amazing either, so decided to take a punt on the 40-1 outsider Ballybough Rasher and as they say the rest is history, I was a real form student most of my racing life but something just looked wrong about this race and you know what I got lucky, no form helped, just some intuition and luck.

The Champion Hurdle of 1966 was my first visit to a Festival day at Cheltenham. I was aged 21 and must have taken a day off from university to go with father and brother. John Haine was a childhood friend as his father and mine were in the same class at school together and remained close friends so we made the journey to watch John ride Salmon Spray. The only vantage point we found in tatts was halfway up a staircase where there was a window looking down the course. It was a foul wet day so we got a very poor view of the race until they turned for home. Two chestnuts with big white blazes. Flyingbolt and Pat Taaffe towered over John on Salmon Spray but the flat race style of the latter won the day with Flyingbolt, who had won the 2 mile chase the day before, fading to third.

Sage, must have been great to see Flying Bolt, amazing to think that at their bests he was rated 17lbs above Kauto Star which is just unthinkable and of course Arkle a couple of pounds ahead of Flying Bolt.

Sometimes in racing you see things that you just cannot believe and even after the race you still scratch your head and cannot find anything to justify what you saw, I have been a form student most of my life but cannot explain what happened in this race. We have a horse rated 109 winning the Juddmonte beating a fantastic champion of a horse rated at the time 130 thats right 21LBS difference in a group one. The only thing you could possibly think is that the champion never run to his best and yet he ran to the pound with the third horse whom he beat in the previous race which was the Coral Eclipse, someone explain this race away.

We got out first TV in 1963. I watched the English Derby on BBC in 1965 when Sea-Bird won. I remember running out to the kitchen to tell my parents I had seen the best horse ever.
Monthjeu won the Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh in 2000. That was the most impressive performance I've seen on a racecourse. He pushed his way between horses and rocketed away. "RESULT STANDS After a Stewards Enquiry, the placings remained unaltered." "held up in touch, always travelling easily, boxed in over 1f out, improved to lead between horses well inside final furlong, not extended"

Have to say this is one of the best novice chases I have seen and so sad that he never got to fulfil his potential through injury, here we have GLORIA VICTIS winning the 2000 Racing Post Chase carrying top weight 11st 10lb, just jumped this lot into the ground and then went to the Gold Cup before falling and breaking his leg when in the lead, could have been something very special, enjoy this.
