Going to post these periodically and these are my favourite racing moments personal to me, so here is the first ,following the 1992 Derby in which Dr Devious beat St Jovite two lengths they then had the re match in the Irish Derby and amazingly both the first and the second broke the course record despite the runner up being beaten twelve lengths, such an amazing performance. And then they had another thriller in Irish Champion when Christy Roche just seemed to ease off in the dying strides, perhaps wary that he was in danger of bumping his old rival?

This next one is just a great memory for me, having gone to London on Arc Day to watch Everton away at Tottenham I decided to back my horse and tape the racing and watch it late on that Sunday evening having had a mere ten pound each way on my selection at 66-1 each way, Everton as usual let you down with Tottenham getting a late winner, but what a surprise when I put the recording on to watch my 66-1 only go and win the Arc.

So here is the story with this racing moment of mine, I was going into Wetherby this day and said to my wife that I thought Barton Bank was a certainty especially getting the weight allowance and with a possible uncontested lead, 10-1 was taken before setting off, anyway a man in his country clothing turned and looked right down on me and simply said " Dont be silly, its got no chance " After the race I looked and looked but for the rest of the meeting he could not be found.

This memory was excellent, I went to this Arc and also for Dalakhani's but its this one that has the memory, I had backed Sakhee at 10-1 after his Juddmonte win and was in the stands having drank a little more than I expected, seeing Sakhee cruising I stood up and shouted " Go on Frankie when your ready " little did I realise that it was only the false straight and I thought oh dear now I am going to look more of an idiot than normal, however this was the best winner of an Arc I have ever seen and really had no need to worry and a nice evening in Paris thanks to this super super horse.

This time for hurdlers was fantastic, just very rare to get three or four top hurdlers at the same time and then we have this race which is the best Champion Hurdle for me we have seen, three fantastic horses, two hardcore champions and another with brilliance on his day. Side story on this one, I was told Hardy Eustace was going to hose up in the Stayers Hurdle early in the season, jumped on at big prices, next thing you know he is thirty three to one and running in the Champion Hurdle, my bets down ante post and then we got treated to this.

Good thread, which I can't resist adding to.
Best memory for me, among many in a lifetime of racing, is being at Ascot in July 1986 For Dancing Brave winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. They went a million miles an hour for most of the race with the two pacemakers going besderk up front. But the sight, and crowd noise that accompanied it, of Dancing Brave cruising up with Eddery looking across will live with me forever. The horse had actually looked in a bit of bother 5 furlongs out when short of room but Eddery had great nerve and briefly rode him for a few strides to obtain a better postion into the straight. After that, well, the horse was miles better tha a class field - although he did tire in the final 100 yards. A great, great day which came just 48 hours after I had been out with my wife of 35 years for the very first time! Incidentally, I have just realised that the race came only three days after Prince Andrew (as was) had married Sarah Ferguson!!! |

So then here is another, this time I had no financial interest at all, this for me is right up there with one of the very best rides you could ever see, the horse in front was a champion hurdler so how much confidence do you need to ride this race, enjoy

Ok so now for probably the best staying chase I have ever seen, indeed the commentators state this immediately after they go past the post, I wont spoil it for anyone who is not aware of this race, again no financial interest for me, this is amazing, take a journey back to the 1984 Whitbread Gold Cup and just enjoy this amazing race.

This one features the best two year old I have ever seen, this being the mighty Arazi, never really lived upto its 2yo form as a 3yo so all we can do is enjoy these three races, he was mighty and to this day not seen another 2yo like this French wonder.

Many years ago I used to enter the AOL tipping competitions for Ascot and Cheltenham under the user name Bahoor, managed to win the first two and second in the third so did really really well, one horse I tipped up was a horse called Flashmans Papers which won the Windsor Castle at 100-1 for me which virtually won the Ascot competition on day one, looked everywhere to try and find that race but cant find it anywhere, anyone finds it please post it up, be great to see that again

I have never ever been a fan of Best Mate though I never doubt the achievement of the three Gold Cups, to put him in perspective at his very best Best Mate would be ten pounds behind Imperial Commander and fifteen pounds behind Kauto Star, so with all the hype around him each year it pleased me no end to see what Paul Carberry did at the end of this race.

The race time for St Jovite's Irish derby was wrong, and never corrected.
My best memory was Dr Devious winning the 1992 English Derby, watching it on a 14" TV brought into work. Nick Mordin in the Sporting Life Weekender wrote an article before that Derby and his four possibles finished 1,2,4,11. That started me analysing thoroughbred pedigrees to find out why one brown horse was better than another brown horse. Now I have two mares, a 2yo in pre-training in France, and sold a 4yo to Australia (landed in Melbourne yesterday). |

Yes it was Bests horse, he also had the third in the race Mullionmilesanhour, dont know much about Nevison interest
