if you are over 50 fatpunt chances are you will struggle to get a job ,same happened to me... started a gardening round   bought tools cheap from  bootsales  went  self employed  done that for 10 -12 years  .still do a bit now and again .

Fat punt could give Ironfailings a job when he starts up his business. Get the bone idle, scrounging stalker into gainful employment and orrrff the Old King Cole. Stalking on here all day 7 days a week is bad for his mental elf.

50 isn't 'old' by any means and in fact many employers are more than happy to engage with them. They tend not to go clubbing, have drama every day in their lives, stay up playing video games all night, and their work attendance is good.

I was made redundant at 53 and it turned out to be a blessing. I was very lucky, hope you are too FP.

If you want to work for a specific company, check their own website (normally a link right down the bottom of their home page).

Sign on and sit back. That's what everybody else is doing! You don't even have to look for a job nowadays. And when you hit 66 or 67 you can sit back and claim your pension (and pension credit if you don't have a private pension) and announce to the world you've 'done your bit' - which you may or may not have done.

I managed to find a job aged 50 but that was during covid- when nobody wanted to work - so I might have got a bit lucky!

I thought I'd give you all a little update. My niece came for a visit today and helped me with my job seeker's allowance application. She did it on my mobile phone in a matter of minutes. If I tried to do it on my desktop, I'd still be doing it now. Younger generation, I guess. I received a text message back saying that they will send me an appointment time to sort it all out person-to-person. I've set the wheels in motion now, and I'll keep you posted about any further developments. I have a meeting with someone tomorrow morning about obtaining a CV, which I don't have.
How's everybody's punting going? Personally, I'm glad the Doncaster meeting is done and dusted. I didn't find a single winner all week. I'm seriously considering quitting the flat and concentrating on the jumps and summer jumps.

FP, a CV is generally created by the individual, it's simply a history of your working career. I've done several for friends in bygone years, but there are many AI CV generators these days, your niece will know how. Good luck.

We had all heard workplace rumours about the financial situation of the firm being really bad, and then all of a sudden we received a text message from the boss telling us to stay at home because they had gone into voluntary insolvency. One week later, we all got an email saying that all of our contracts had been terminated.
One door closes, another one opens.

I remember British Leyland (ex BMC) Bathgate in Scotland closing down in the eighties,8000 men lost their jobs…..

Most moved on and got other jobs….

With Labour in Government, your job was always in peril unless you're on the gravy train with a job in the civil service that is. I had an excellent Epsom, mediocre Royal Ascot, good Goodwood, double figure number of 2nd places at York (again), decent Donny. The Racing Post website 'improvements' have made the job of studying a much more laborious task and made the job less enjoyable.

Good luck with the job hunting FP. No rush though, have a few weeks punting without the day job hanging over you. You're probably find you'll do lot better with your punting.

Routine is key. Keeps you healthy mentally as well as physically.

Its the same though isnt it , just government pays it instead of the company

I think there are limits  on the number of qualifing years (20) and on the salary level so OP will lose some years and if he was on a good salary he will lose some there as well.

But I'm not an expert so I would be glad to be mistaken.

The company would only have to pay the statutory minimum.

But it might pay more if (a) it is in the employees' contract that they get more, or (b) the company wished to maintain its good reputation (including with remaining employees).

It is the same as sick pay. There's a statutory minimum but most firms pay above & beyond.

But it is a moot point if the company has no money.

Its 1 week pay for each year 22-40 and 1 and half weeks pay over 41 , capped at 751 a week and 20 years

IMPORTANT: check your national insurance record. Have you paid enough stamps for a full state pension when the time comes?

You say you will be claiming JSA but when time runs out and they switch you to needs-based UC, then whether or not you need the hassle of signing on for no money might depend on whether you need the NI credits for your pension.

Hopefully you'll have another job before then but...

His main job now is keeping the money coming in by applying for jobs or making up that you've applied for jobs.  Travelling for interviews where the firm trains people to do interviews and there is no chance of a job is expensive. For the most part you don't get travel expenses.

No mate, I worked in a wood factory making sheds and summerhouses. After 23 years of doing that, I'm hoping I can try my hand at something else.

He did say he is 50 and its 1.5 over age 41 , so it looks like 9 x 1.5 and 11 x 1 .

Pay is capped at £751 (£783 in Northern Ireland) per week. Length of service is capped at 20 years.

You get:
0.5 week’s pay for each full year worked when you’re under 22
1 week’s pay for each full year worked when you’re between 22 and 40
1.5 week’s pay for each full year worked when you’re 41 or older

around 4/5 months survival without a regular paid income.
Get your name down with agencies as soon as possible. Take anything while you apply for something more in line with what you've been doing for 29 years(if the landscape accomadates it).
Don't hang around waiting for a job to arrive in your lap or believing the state will support you.
Get a driving job or summat.

I was lucky enough to be able to retire by selling my business at 56yo but wanted to work until pension age so I signed up with an employment agency. This was in 2000 and at that time I was told that they rarely had any vacancies for over 50s and I ended up with just 2 days work in 12 months. I did have a few self employed jobs but I have not worked for a full time employer since I was 28. Good luck Fatpunt. Redundancy is not a nice way to lose a job.

so obviously ye get none of all thos ekind of paye benefits, if i didnt work
i never got paid, na sick na fook all, plain n simple...thats s/e for ye...
i had to quit my major pay provider back in 2022 due to (ill) health...

I've just got back from my interview. I had to do a bit of shopping while I was in town. It was a bit of a waste of time, to be honest. She made me sign a load of papers and told me I have to meet my new 'Job Coach' on Mon 5th October. She said that I should apply for Universal Credit. I don't know what that is or who can claim it, but I'll give it a go. There is a big new Amazon warehouse opening near where I live, and she said I should enquire about vacancies.

Par for the course, sadly. In truth, there is not a great deal they can do for most claimants but government regulation developed in response to press hysteria about wastrels living the life of Riley on the dole means they demand a lot of box-ticking paperwork to prove you really are looking for a job. It's a waste of everyone's time.
