'Jockeys can't make them run faster, but they can bloody well make them run a lot slower'

Whoever it is, all I can suggest is don't apply for a job in racing media as we are spun the exact opposite every day of the week.

The article was written by Chris Cook but he was quoting Tom Segal

Thanks. Obviously, I don't know the exact context, but it doesn't seem to tally with what I would associate him with. If you take it at face value it's a massive indictment of the sport, rather than the usual cheerleading.

Watched plenty of In The Know, and can't remember Segal ever criticising a jock. Strange.

segals quotes in the article
Segal is particularly keen on the topic.

"Jockeys are very much in my thinking," he says. "The number of times people tell me that the jockey makes no difference . . . You wouldn't say that about a football team or a rugby player. There are levels of ability in all sports. The good ones are just better, they don't make the mistakes.

"A jockey can't make a horse run faster but he can bloody well make it run a lot slower. That's the key, don't get in their way. Ruby [Walsh] was the best at it."

The nearest people we have to a Walsh in the weighing room right now, Segal reckons, are Paul Townend and Harry Cobden.

"The key is that they do nothing, which sounds ridiculous, but it's very hard to do. It's the hardest thing to do – but it's also the best thing, just leave it to the horses, and that's what they do.

"On the Flat, the obvious ones stand out. They just don't make that many mistakes."
