My pre-race back settled as a loser, my in-play offset voided, so full stake loss. What went on?

I bet 5 minutes before the off, winning bet unpaid,,no stake back, settled a loser, dont know why, though still in window

Don't think they suspended at the off, didn't on my screen anyway until they'd gone about 2 furlongs on itv pictures.

Can't understand why they do this? Why not let all bets stand and punters just stand by their bets, win or lose. Why penalise one set of punters and reward another set of punters? Betfair are ridiculous with this rule, bearing in mind it is their mistake in the first place.

Official explanation. I only had a tenner on to win 80, so I didn't have inclination to get involved in a big dispute about it and they did give me free bets to the value as a gesture of good will, but potential major problem for some punters.
