Nearly worked with Kalpana going too early.

Surely this will have to be governed soon (Pace setter beat out of sight as usual not run to win the race), (Action boxing in Ombudsman yesterday). 2 of many examples.

Colin Kean  purely at fault IMO went to far too soon on a filly thats reknowned for coming late with good turn of foot and aint a grinder, luckily for him filly battled and got him out of jail.

Any horse not run on it's own merits to gain the best possible position shouldn't be running. And we all know O'Brien has been increasingly using dirty tactics all season. Just further examples at this meeting.

Pacemakers, by definition , are in the race to set up a pace suitable for a stable mate. They are

not there to achieve their best possible placing. Therefore, they should not be allowed. If Whelan

had wanted to achieve the best possible placing he should have given the horse a breather for a

couple of furlongs.
Report Mr Spock August 20, 2026 3:57 PM BST
Simple solution, horses should be declared as pacemakers and if they win ignored for betting purposes (like betting without the favourite). If they are not declared and then run like pacemakers, the trainer should be fined and the horse/jockey banned under the non-triers rule.
Report workrider August 20, 2026 4:02 PM BST
Just to reflect guys back as far as the 70s there has been pacemakers , in fact the great English trainer Major Hern ran 3 pacemakers trying to get  Grundy beat . So before Aiden was even training horses or even riding them .British trainers were at it, so less of the crying, after all it was the British who started it...
Report roggrain August 20, 2026 4:03 PM BST
What AOB and others are doing by employing pacemakers is within the rules. It's the rules that

are to blame. Pacemakers should not be allowed but they are specifically permitted within the rules

(prividing they are ridden 'to achieve their best possible placing'). What an absurd contradiction!

It's up to the other jocks to decide when to go after 'em.

Anyone who thinks (knows) that a pacemaker is not running to win a race must surely be cleaning up IR as the horses price dramatically shortens as it goes further and further clear. Not sure how short this particular horse went IR but i know i saw single figures, ie) a tenth of its pre race price. One thing knowing after the race but occasionally these pace makers hold on to win.
Report steerforth August 20, 2026 4:34 PM BST
The OP hasn't articulated his point too well and probably picked the wrong example; pacemakers are a well established feature of pattern racing and punters know the score. But to question his intelligence misses the point. We've all seen what Coolmore are up to, and it's way beyond the  accepted "tactical" norms. To twist it into a Britain v Ireland issue is typical of our friend over the water. As usual, it's nothing to do with that. It needs calling out because its not on - the suspensions from Ascot were right and proper, but if it needs to be legislated then so be it.
Report impossible123 August 20, 2026 4:36 PM BST
AOB does not only run pacemakers. AOB runs spoilers whose specific task is to frustrate or hinder his main adversary / principal and probably jolly.

In the end Keene got it right as Kalpana won! I can understand why he decided to go when he did and yes we all saw with hindsight he could have delayed for 1/2 a furlong. Sparan Nua ran a stormer especially after the previous run disappointment. The rest were out with the washing.
Report 1st time poster August 20, 2026 4:40 PM BST
AOB say their running to get a true run race, KALAPNNA for example in this race uing his pace 3 furlongs out to bring the hare back intead of uing it in the final fdurlong, might a true run race for 80% of AOB plodders but its not a true run race for everyone
Report N-east Correspondent August 20, 2026 4:41 PM BST
but that wasnt a spoiler today, wasnt even a pacemaker as nobody followed Sugar Island
Keane clearly panicked a bit on Kalpana and just had enough to hold on, doubtful
Arc on soft going will suit her on all known form and probably best swerved imo for more suitable pots
Report sageform August 20, 2026 4:45 PM BST
it did not benefit Minnie Hawk in the end but if the Bolger horse had won it would have been a travesty. You could see Kalpana hanging once she was clear and on a track she didn't know, she had no idea where the line was. I think she just reacted enough to hold on when she saw the second upside. As said above, the pacemaker was not in the race to get its best position which breaks the rules-again!
Report 1st time poster August 20, 2026 4:48 PM BST
like yeterday car crash,if kalpanna were johnny g,s or AOB,s they,d run another pacemaker , 2nd on the peleton as AOB calls them to run in between the leader and the fav ,so it,s  not left to the fav to use his speed to bring the hare back, we have 99% of races run everyweek run without pacemakers
Report impossible123 August 20, 2026 4:51 PM BST
Minnie Hauk was never going to win. However, the spoiler from AOB / Coolmore nearly caused the pilot of the jolly, Kalpana, to not win the race. But, I'm glad the best horse won.

fancied by some inishmor, well backed legal legacy didnt get by the hare, grade one winner last time out johannes only beat it 1.5 length, easy to say it fell in a hole but how long could kEANE wait and still be confident to bring him back ?
Report sageform August 20, 2026 5:11 PM BST
It was the suddenness that Sugar Island collapsed that made it so hard for Colin Keane to judge when to go. The leader stopped dead at the 3 furlong pole which meant that Kalpana caught her a furlong quicker than almost anyone could have predicted. No blame to Colin Keane but was that all part of the cunning plan to nick it with Minnie Hawk who in the end was not good enough?
Report TameTheTiger August 20, 2026 5:20 PM BST
has a pacemaker ever gone off like scalded cat and held on to win ? Sugar Island today was 130 SP but traded as low as 3/1 in running.
Report 1st time poster August 20, 2026 5:30 PM BST
dropped dead finsihed 1.5 length behind 2nd fav and grade 1 winner last time out and beat well backed and oaks 2nd legal legacy and inishmor, if KEANE had waited longer the HARE might have beat a few more home

AOB / Coolmore has ruined Hawk Mountain who won The Futurity (Gp 1) and a Gp 3 in France over 8f and 9f. But, the horse has been sacrificed to try to facilitate Con River to snag a prestigious Gp 1 eg International over 10f to enhance his CV as a future sire.
Report MJK August 20, 2026 5:50 PM BST
So the usual idiot who just hates O'brien so much it literally drives him crazy now saying the pacemaker nearly caused the winner to lose, after yesterday saying the pacemaker who missed the break yesterday caused the fav to lose. Nothing about the pacemaker who led yesterday though. Cant get any more demented than that I'm afraid. Though he probably will.

AOB / Coolmore have form. Their running of a battalion of spoilers is to frustrate and effect a negative outcome for their main principal rival eg deliberately shadowing and boxing in their principal rival eg Puerto Rico against Bow Echo.

Speaking to Racing TV's Lydia Hislop, Gosden said he was also caught by surprise by the tactical make-up of the race.
He said: "Quite frankly we thought Action would go forward and he didn't and he was outside us the whole time. I thought they were setting it up for others. Our horse isn't a soft-ground horse. It's nobody's fault that the rain came."
