York advice please

Saxon there’s a great place to watch the racing it’s around 3/4 furlong out in the stand overlooking the grass hardly anyone goes there as for some reason people thing the closer to the winning line the better you really see the race unfold if you have binoculars then even better ,do go down by the Henry Cecil gates it’s worth 5 minutes of your time there right down the other end by the pre parade ring have a great day hope the weather doesn’t spoil it

Food and bar wise there’s plenty your as well just finding one on your travels the big cafe behind tatts which does all sorts and by racecourse standards both quality and cost ok

Put a jacket, shirt and tie on Saxon, the County Stand is the best place to be at all times and gives you access to any part of the racecourse. Easier to get served at the bar also.

You can actually hire a jacket and tie £10 tie £40 jacket fully refunded if taken back after racing

Well, what a grand venue this really is, and such a warm welcome!

I was there yesterday also and even the rain didn't dampen the spirits. We slumed it in the cheap seats but really enjoyed the day.
Entering and leaving was a doddle and they have the bar service down to a tee, never waited on a drink.

How did you find bar prices?
Gen racing is expensive but if you have to wait and the beer is poor then it's not worth the hassle, besides gambling and drinking really don't mix.

Every now and again you have to forget about being rooted, and just enjoy yourselves. As they say in those parts, no pockets in a shroud.

Best to go alone,table for one…..no one nipping at the head when you’re trying to pick a winner…..

Correct Cider, get anything back is a bonus. Wallet empty had a great few days

if you are constantly scrutinising everything and trying to limit spending it ruins the event. stay home squeaks. or in the spoons

To save time and I see this at the football couldn't they have the first 30 pints of each pulled......Wrong sport I know but half time at my local club (Bromley) can be infuriating....surely just have the first 30 pints pulled 5 mins before the halftime whistle and then you are in front for the next 15 or so mins...

Queues at the races send me loopy.....ave em ready ffs! Stop pouring pre the last race and losses will be minimal if any at all.

.....and make the prive a round figure......Brighton races doing £5.05 a pint on race day sent me galactic.....and that was when they still toook cash!

one reason they dont is lack of space. most racecourse bars arent very big and youd be knocking em over all the time

mine jew i wooden want anything in a plastic receeptacle. drink bottles and take your onw glass

busy pub near me back in the day used to sell one of the best pints of 80 BOB in the north east,even lager drinkers used to drink it, and back in old 12 to 2 sun drinking law, they,d always have a 100+ pints pulled and on trays on bar ready to sell, with it having a large head on it,you could ull them very early and let them settle

They do Horatio, they have people behind the front bar staff, constantly pouring pints, no waiting time, no ques.

A First Class Course

Was very impressed, even the taxi and free buses after the last race were run with military precision, a top class track

When I was a teenager I worked in a fast food joint in Oxford St London right opposite Selfridges. At its peak usually around the period of Easter the store could sell 5000 burgers in an hour. There were 14 tills but 13 would be used, the other as data screen for management only.

On the frontline there would be an experienced tiller, with a backer behind - a runner; the tiller would get the food on display eg burgers, cold drinks, fries, apple pies; the backer would do hot drinks, milkshakes and special orders. An order of 10 items or more would be done within 60 secs, shorter, if less; the floor of the frontline would be mopped with hot water prior to opening.

Everything would be expected to run smoothly; spillage or accident would be dealt with promptly and safely. Safety was paramount.

If the will and the organisation are there anything would be possible.

Well, it was a cracking day out. Certainly now one of favourite racecourses, maybe number 1 when I have reflected.
I’m on the rattler now going home, which has so far been easy.
The whole racecourse makes you feel at ease with the convenience of all the amenities, and unlike certain southern courses, they are not trying to bleed every penny possible out of you!
The Yorkshire folk were most friendly and rightly proud of their venue.

A special thanks to jimnast, who recommended an excellent quiet viewing point a little way from the winning post.

My first visit to the course (and the city) was Wednesday, i thought it was superb, even though the Juddmonte result didn't go my way. Not as grandois as Ascot, but it doesn't have to be. No problems getting a drink from the bars and we were in a couple. If there is a negative, you can't take drinks outside. All staff were friendly and helpful. Good views if you were high enough.

Train £116 (from Kings Cross, booked a few days prior)
Shuttle bus from the station £4.00
County stand ticket £80 included a program
Drinks were circa £7.50/£8.00 (i was drinking cider)
We didn't eat there, but a 3 course lunch in the Gimcrack restautant was £46.25. Champagne afternoon tea there was £28.95.
Saw Queen consort Camilla, but i'm not a fan.

Pleased you enjoyed the best course in the country..a very long way for you for one day i suggest next time you go stop over its a lovely city just got  ready for a night spent a bloody fortune but will be back Sept October.

Being from London thought Sandown was the best course but went to York and very impressed. Try to get back when I can, usually a couple of days at the Dante meeting but it's top of the list for me.

Saxon that quiet stand was the busiest I’ve seen it since the whole course was full back in 2012 for frankel,can’t understand why as yesterday was back to normal,glad you enjoyed the day they do get a lot right at York.

Also Saxon feel free to ask on advice on any racecourses you may visit for the first time in the future.

Nice to see you also Ronnie it was very good as ever already booked for two nights at the Dante which is a long time away but unfortunately it will be here quicker than we would like.

I was tipped an unusual dish for a stater cheese and pear pasta and I thought it was very good ,Debbie had the beef medallions I had the fillet she chose the best .

I have stayed in York a couple of times before on business and pleasure. Indeed, it is a wonderful city. Next time I race at The Knavesmire, I will take your advice and stay over…..it’s a long day out from South Warwickshire.

I’ve raced at 90% of UK courses, but yet to tick off Epsom or Goodwood, so will seek your advice when I visit either.
