Coolmore in decline?

I've not done any analysis on the depth of their 2YOs, but their main hope in the Phoenix Stakes today is a filly, which is not what you'd expect from a stallion-making outfit.

O'Brien has won the race ?17 times previously but not sure any of them were fillies.

True Love was a very short favourite for the race last year.

A lot of hopes will be on Constitution River this season.

They have the next crop of St Marks Basilica, Auguste Rodin and City Of Troy.

The firm has been built off Northern Dancer , Sadlers Wells , Gallileo etc- remember there was no tax on stallion fees in Irish racing as they were exempt from duty - French complained that Irish state was effectively giving Coolmore & others a state sponsored tax break & it wasn't a level playing filed ( which it wasn't) - still got the fire power , but your right no uber stallons - or stallions that can throw a good stallion - Sires of sires , would still bet that they will find the next Frankel though

A period of rebuilding. I think they are hoping Justify would emerge as a formidable replacement. I think breeding the present lot of mediocre Gp 1 winning horses will not reestablish Coolmore as world No 1.

At the moment Coolmore has not produced any horse with the calibre of Dancing Brave, Enable or even Bow Echo let alone the once in a life-time horse, Frankel.

Correct me if I am wrong but all the top Coolmore stallions were bred elsewhere.*
They will wait until someone else "breaks" a stallion then move in and buy it.

*the breeder was not Coolmore, the sire/dam decision was elsewhere

Take your point there but possibly the best stallion and sire of stallions was Sadlers Wells who WAS bred by one of the original Coolmore crew, Robert Sangster.

No doubt who the best sire is currently, and I see Coolmore aren't standing still in that regard, having paid 525,000 gns for Marco Polo, the son of Night Of Thunder made a pleasing debut yesterday.

Well, yes I could say Sadler's Wells was bred elsewhere than at Coolmore Stud, Co Tipperary.
His sire Northern Dancer was standing in Maryland, USA.
His dam was in the USA.
Sadler's Wells was foaled in Kentucky, USA.

Foaling country is important.
Every few weeks in The Irish Field they list the (IRE) horses who won abroad.
Countries like to advertise their horse breeding industry success.

My horse place in France on Sunday.
He is (IRE). He earned 13,440. If he was (FR) he would have earned 19,488.
The French are trying to support French bred horses.

I am (IRE) and I live in Co Tipperary.

Thanks for clarification and I did miss the point about incentives for breeders. I was countering the suggestion that the Coolmore team just snap up promising stallions without planning their own strategy. You were lucky to get a word out of Sadlers - he was almost always on the job!
