England won the World Cup. 35 years ago Alan Ball had taken over the pub up the road from our local, King George day at Ascot we bumped into Alan who was having a bad day but he invited to his place( it used to be called the Piag Sty, he changed it to WinAgins). That morning Cliff Morgan had interviewed Bobby Moore as it was the Saturday they won the Cup. Bally was still in a foul mood so I said we should at least celebrate the anniversary. He exploded. Right saturday , differant date. Never calmed down but met at the races often, loved to punt.
Never mind the World Cup - What about the Horse Racing ?
July 30th 1966.
HORNED Moon (Fav) ridden by Brian Taylor - Won the NORFOLK Stakes - then run at NEWMARKET.
Whether this race was transferred to Royal Ascot, later, in honour of the Duke of Norfolk - who was the Monarch's representative at Ascot, until his retirement, and subsequent death in the early 1970s - (as well as him being Senior Steward of the Jockey Club) -
- or - The New Stakes (5f) at Royal Ascot was renamed in the Duke of Norfolk's honour, I am not sure - although the latter prompts a distantly read memory.
Perhaps is was/became a joint manifestation of both. ------------
Meanwhile, at Epsom ...
Peter O'Sullevan's sprinter BE FRIENDLY - Won a 3-year-olds Maiden (at Starting) at odds of 1/3 - having won his first race on his previous outing at Kempton (Turf, of course )
What a great and illustrious career BE FRIENDLY went on to have !

I can still hear Peter O'Sullevan's voice on the BBC, now -
His tone - He was absolutely astounded and flabbergasted that the Stewards had Disqualified the FIRST THREE.
'I've Never known anything like it' (or similar).
Probably the only time Peter was ever 'caught with his pants down'.

I had backed Confusion at 20/1 on course . Saw the replay on TV and thought there was no way they'd give it the second so cleverly, I thought, had some insurance on the third . The crazy stewards disqualified the first threethe awarded to the race to the well beaten fourth - Brook. To rub salt in the wound , as I was putting money on for the next race the Actor Robert Morley, who I think had some Italian connections, was picking up money on the Italian connected Brook.
