Dire….
Report MALAY June 6, 2026 8:41 AM BST
Do they have any employees that know anything about horse racing nowadays?
They used to have the best back in the day ?
Will they cover it on radio ?
Report Regbutler June 6, 2026 8:50 AM BST
And again at 8.30...no mention of it, but all other sports covered including wheelchair tennis

Btw, in the Northern Ireland v Turkey women's game, a Turkish player deliberately handled the ball on the line to prevent a goal...penalty awarded and scored by NI but she only got a yellow card? I thought Red was mandatory for this offence?

To rub it on, she later scored the winner for Turkey
Report impossible123 June 6, 2026 9:09 AM BST
I think AI ought to have been deployed to over-rule the wrong decision not to send the offending player off. The player clearly prevented a certain goal from happening.
Report MALAY June 6, 2026 9:27 AM BST
Seems strange decision if she had pulled player down going in on goal she would have been sent off.
I don’t recall seeing red cards for hand ball in box recently in men’s football.
Maybe there is mad rule penalty and yellow is enough.
Did they have VAR at match ?

They sold everything down the river…..desperate mob. I almost vomit over my iPad when paying for it tbh…..

Formula one….golf, football, cricket and more, all extra subscription fees because of this lot……

Sc@mbags….imo.

Don't pay for it. I stopped about 10 years ago.
Report Cider June 6, 2026 9:45 AM BST
In that 10 years, I have had one door knock from a goon, and junk snail mail that goes straight in the recycling without being opened.
Report formoftheace June 6, 2026 9:54 AM BST
Certainly happen one day cider tbh…
Report DrGordons June 6, 2026 9:56 AM BST
Cider, how did the conversation go after the door knock?
Report Cider June 6, 2026 10:00 AM BST
They have no power of entry at all. I told the story before on here, but pure coincidence I was expecting a parcel on the day and answered the door without looking. But even then it's straight forward, you don't even need to speak to them. However I did, just to tell him that I don't watch live tv and just use apps like you tube and netflix. He asked if he could come in to make sure I didn't have an aerial plugged in lol, and I said absolutely not, have a good day. And that was it, they updated my property on the database to say visiting there is a waste of time.

I'd feel more aggrieved at the BBC ignoring the Derby if racing generally took the race more seriously.

Imagine you are the sports editor of a newspaper. How much space do you have to cover the Derby when there are half a dozen other meetings taking up your pages?

Or bookies. I don't bet with Ladbrokes but a quick look at their home page shows them highlighting the England vs New Zealand match (football, cricket is also ignored) and no mention of the Derby that I can see. I can't be bothered to check the other firms but I imagine it's the same with most.
Report Cider June 6, 2026 10:02 AM BST
I do appreciate that it might be more tricky if you live with other people, that could get tripped up. But on your own, or live with people you trust not to be stupid, there is no reason to carry on paying the tax.
Report Ramruma June 6, 2026 10:23 AM BST
Most people follow the rules because they are the rules. But Cider is right. There's little chance of being prosecuted for not having a television licence.

Also fare-dodging and shoplifting provided you stay under £200 a time. Different people draw the line in different places.
Report Jumper45 June 6, 2026 10:28 AM BST
The bookies are doing what they've been doing now for the last 10-15 years. Concentrating on more lucrative markets such as football and the casino slots markets. They also said last year they'd be less focused on racing. It is no surprise even though the Derby is today, they are already full on tapping punters up for the World Cup.

As for the TV channels, racing is just a small niche sport these days and we all know that it no longer holds the public interest of the past. How does ITV news treat it, given their support?
Report Frogger June 6, 2026 10:29 AM BST
fare dodging is rife I live at the end of a tube and the young fellas pushing through the gates is legion

they actually did have comm on radio 5 yesterday, years gone by i used to listen to r ascot on radio 2 , the coverage every day was brilliant with commentary Peter Bromley

Personally I have paid more than my fair share of tax. I only use bbc content for betting, last year it was three events, this it will be two, max. They hate me and people like me, and they aren't getting any more of my money.
Report bigbillbovington June 6, 2026 11:22 AM BST
Noted that, mentioned loads of sports which most people have no interest, but not a mention of the derby.
Report stu June 6, 2026 11:37 AM BST
Fair play cider, I hate the beeb too. And being taxed to watch a TV in this day and age is ridiculous I agree - not sure I'd have the gumption to not pay it though, as the missus deals with it by direct debit for us, so I'd have to tell her we were going 'illegal' and might need to answer a door knock Laugh

Sadly, they do still have the occasional coverage of use however for punting purposes, so couldn't claim I never watch it.
Report Ramruma June 6, 2026 11:53 AM BST
Being taxed to watch television is actually very common in other countries although often just rolled into general taxation or added to electricity bills rather than a specific licence like we have.

Report steerforth June 6, 2026 12:44 PM BST
Not for a second suggesting its the panacea, but the  Derby would be a bigger pull if it was still on a Wednesday.
Report stu June 6, 2026 12:46 PM BST
Ram - it's not just the 'tax' it's the fact that only the Beeb are allowed to do it as a mandatory payment, and no-one else. As though they provide something so much better than all the others, when in fact they are one of the worst TV providers around.
Report Ramruma June 6, 2026 5:11 PM BST
Biggest race of the Flat season and racing shoots itself in the foot yet again by overshadowing Christmas Day's win with the late non-runnerdom of Benvenuto Cellini who to the non-racing viewer would appear to have run the whole race.

Maybe it is a blessing that tomorrow's sport headlines will be dominated by the England game (or Scotland game if north of the border).

It was a shocker, now they only go into 3rd place play off.
