Media falling over themselves to big him up. He probably has had the most winners in the last two weeks, but what they will never mention is that he has probably had the most losers as well, and of course they far exceed the winners. I said a long time ago he had become the Mark Johnston of the south, and it's a million miles away from how his father operated.

Recently had a chat with Anna Lisa at goodwood. Lovely lady, asked her about stepping up eydon in trip. Said that they had discussed it but not sure where to go with him next, they were keen on coronation cup but Murphy told them no way he would hate the track. Had a long chat just before the guineas at goodwood with William muir, lovely bloke as well. I've only ever had decent interaction with people involved actively in the sport. Then you see the wanchor footballers deluded of their own importance walking past young kids clamouring for an autograph. Friend of mine who lives in bath once told me that hayley turner got the leg up in the parade ring and she told him you better go betting ring now and get your money on this ones winning today.

Here is the other side of the footballers' story, from Peter Crouch's book, How to be a Footballer:-
Outside every training ground will be the autograph hunters. At least, they used to be autograph hunters. Fans waited by the gates, you signed the headshots of you they’d brought with them, everyone was happy.
They’re now autograph sellers. Grown men carrying a suitcase of shirts, wanting each of them signed so they can frame them, stick them on eBay and make a load of money.
Players noticed that and no longer wanted to stop as they drove out, which spoiled things for genuine fans twice – once at the gate, again online when some shyster was offering signed kit for £500 a pop.
So the charlatans wised up to that, and they started bringing kids to do the dirty work for them, either their own or paying someone else’s.
So you stop, and a bloke in the bushes pushes forward a kid who should be at school. The kids will be in the team kit, freezing cold.
They will also already have been at Liverpool, Manchester United and City that same day, working like Victorian street urchins. So now you have to drive past the kids, which just feels so wrong.

Of course he has plenty of losers as well but prize money is the aim for many of them. He is becoming more like Skelton in that regard. If you just bet 3yos the strike rate is pretty good. 3 Goup races in 3 days is not too shabby.

Although no Mill Reef has passed through ( chances are so slim),Kingsclere in the past few years has had a stronger overall team than Balding snr ever had.

I enjoyed the series documentary of Balding and Kingsclere Impressed by their set-up and dedication (even if it was for the cameras)
Never really laid a Balding horse since.

The majority of trainers are guarded in interviews. Only the ones who get asked for an interview once a month sound pleased about it. I have known Andrew since he was a student at Cirencester and he is anything but a "posh boy" Very approachable, no airs and graces and very good at his job. What impresses me is the way that nearly every runner ends up with some prize money even if if it for 6th place. Hence he is closing in on £2 million for the year already. Any yard with 200 plus horses will have some with little ability but the majority that run are capable of at least getting placed.
