Well done Gravesend:

A parade to celebrate St George, who "stood for tolerance and integration" has taken place in north Kent.

More than 1,500 young people from 23 schools took part in Thursday's event in what organisers say is England's largest St George's Day parade.

The annual event, organised by Cohesion Plus, is marking its 20th year with celebrations in Gravesend before moving on to Dartford later in the day.

Gurvinder Sandher, artistic director, says the event celebrates "the best of north Kent" and "brings together the whole community".

St George's Day, held on 23 April, honours England's patron saint and is often marked by events celebrating English culture and community.

Festivities began in Gravesend at 09:45 BST, with performances, music and costumed procession drawing large crowds into the town centre.

Russell Palmer, from Hysterical History, who has portrayed St George in the parade since 2006, said: "Predominantly this parade is for the children. The children are the ones that are buzzing."

He added: "It is so bad today - it's going to be 6 miles with 35 kg of armour - you know the marathons - this is a real test of courage."
Deborah Croxton, Gravesham Borough Council's portfolio holder for community and leisure, said the parade was "a great opportunity to bring together people from different backgrounds and faiths to celebrate St George".

Dot Masters, a retired teaching assistant who has worked at Cecil Road Primary School for 32 years, said the children were waving flags and all "very excited to be here".

She said: "We do this every year in Gravesend, it's very popular.

"All the schools like to get involved. It's an amazing event."

......and well done Warrington...

THE flag was raised at Warrington Town Hall to celebrate St George's Day.

A chorus of singing could be heard from outside of the town hall this morning, Thursday, to honour St George's Day.

Crowds gathered to watch the flag raising ceremony where Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Mo Hussain, was joined by other officials and a class of school children.

The school put on a wonderful performance which was watched by many observers.

And the flag at Warrington Town Hall was raised to mark the day.

.....and Warminster too.........

A town has been festooned with English flags ahead of St George’s Day.

Warminster Town Council officers have hung flags bearing the St George’s Cross along Market Place and High Street a day ahead of the annual celebration to honour the nation’s patron saint.

A spokesperson for the town council said: “The grounds team at Warminster Town Council has been installing flags of St George above businesses and properties across the town centre ready to mark St George’s Day”
The region has seen St George’s Cross emerge as a prominent symbol over the past year or so, with Westbury White Horse draped with red fabric and a flag was cable tied to a monument

Last week, Wiltshire Council permitted Pewsey pub landlord and councillor Jerry Kunkler to keep a 20ft-by-20ft St George's Cross on the white front of The Moonrakers Inn, which were painted on in 2016 to show support for the England football team.

At a meeting of Wiltshire Council's eastern area planning committee on the afternoon of Thursday, April 16 councillors voted by a majority in favour of granting him listed building consent.

Well done to the pub chain 'Proper Pubs'

Free pints for St George’s Day for anyone with these names
Proper Pubs, which has 239 pubs across the UK, is offering free pints to patriots this Thursday, April 23. There’s only one catch: you need to be named George, or some variation of it, such as Georgia, Georgina, Georgie - "we’re not picky", says the pub chain.

The offer includes popular beers such as John Smiths, Fosters and Carling, as well as white wines, ciders, rosé and soft drinks like Pepsi Max. Proper Pubs says free pint patriots will need to show valid ID to prove their namesake connection to St George.

King Charles joins the party:

The British monarch has announced three important appointments to the Order of the Garter as he marked a big occasion on Thursday.

As per the announcement, King Charles, 77, has bestowed Britain's most prestigious chivalric honour upon Lord Peter Hennessy, Lord Augustine Thomas O'Donnell and Lord Ian on St George's Day.

The all three distinguished members of the House of Lords have been appointed to the Order of the Garter.

Lord Hennessy is a pmoinant personality. He has built a distinguished career across several publications. Meanwhile, Lord O'Donnell served as the country's most senior civil servant from 2005 to 2011.

He currently belongs to the global well-being movement as a board member.

On teh other hand, Lord Burnett made history upon his 2017 appointment as Lord Chief Justice, becaming the youngest holder of that office since 1958 at the age of 59.

Companions of the Garter are selected personally by the sovereign, typically recognising individuals who have held public office, made notable contributions to national life, or served the monarch directly.

Thursday's appointments bring the total number of companions to 23, leaving just one vacancy among the maximum 24 permitted.

The Order's current membership includes such distinguished figures as former Prime Ministers Sir Tony Blair and Sir John Major.

Each year, the institution is honoured through a ceremonial procession and service held within the historic grounds of Windsor Castle, maintaining traditions that have endured for nearly 700 years.

Plenty going on to celebrate St George's Day if you look...........

Well done Aylesbury....

Aylesbury Town Council has announced a series of events to celebrate St George’s Day taking place in the town centre this weekend.
On Sunday, Aylesbury town centre will be transformed back to the medieval times via a ‘historical fayre’.

Interactive activities will be available to families in locations throughout the heart of the town centre and performers will be posted in central Aylesbury.

Visitors can find St George’s Day themed events in Friars Square Shopping Centre, Market Square and the Kings Head Pub. A uniformed parade will march around Market Square at 4pm.

Aylesbury Town Council revealed that this year’s fayre is themed around women in history to celebrate their impact across the ages.

Among the historic figures who will be brought back to life during the fayre are Queen Victoria, Anne Boleyn, and Florence Nightingale. A performance of ‘Matilda (Not that one)!’ from the Unbound Theatre group will take place in Friars Square.

An interactive show called ‘Women of the War’ will be performed in Market Square. Aylesbury Town Centre confirmed that as well as this year’s theme St George will be roaming the town on horseback.

At Aylesbury’s oldest pub, The King’s Head, live music from the Elizabethan era and historic storytelling will be part of its themed entertainment package. In the bar’s dining room, there will be several engaging talks from Buckinghamshire Historical Association, Discover Bucks Museum and FNHC. A pub quiz will close proceedings prior to the grand parade.

Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, tweeted a message on Tuesday (April 21) which mistakenly said it was St George's Day and he had been celebrating with faith leaders from across the capital. A spokesperson for Sir Sadiq said it was a typo.
