Proper fence, favoured good bold jumpers not the glorified hurdles we have now.

Why is the jockey carrying a flag?

Back in the 70s there were strategically placed flags at the highest point of each fence, if any jockey was fortunate enough to grab one on way round and then win the race prize money was doubled, was known as the Bifter Bonus as the race was sponsored by Capstan.
