Another load of pointless hype about a novice stakes worth £6400. A certain horse is entered and called an intended runner so we are all supposed to be frothing at the mouth. It looks a much easier race than on his flat debut when there was at least some uncertainty. I suppose he could refuse to go into the stalls this time but I imagine it will take a couple more runs before the novelty wears off.

The aim of today's race is to obtain a handicap mark. As such, will he be extended by Moore? Several bookies are offering price boosts on him winning by a certain number of lengths.
Report Storm Alert March 25, 2026 6:41 PM GMT
I too have my doubts about how much he will be extended. At Newcastle Osin was probably told, we want to find out how good he is over 12f. Now they know, I agree it might be more of a case of getting a handicap for future races, without giving him hard races.

Here is a take on the performance I have not read. Suppose you had a good knowledge of horse racing but had been on another planet for weeks. Then you return as tonight's horses enter the straight. The sound is turned down on your TV so you do not know it is C Hill. The horse wins, so what would you write down as notes for the performance. 'Travelled well, led inside final furlong, pushed out, won comfortbaly'. Nothing brilliant in that given there were some poor horses in opposition.

What I am trying to say is how the hype over this horse is masking what is achieving so far on the flat. A dynamic and very good win at Swell agianst some poor horses. It did travel supreme easily throughout at Swell.

But tongight, was the win dynamic? And, to my eye, it did not travel quite as easily.

Now, much of those two things might be down to the difference in approach between Murphy and Moore. The latter just gets it done but when interviewd afterards he said 'there is still a bit of improvement there'.

Of course, that is Moore all over BUT it needs a lot more than 'a bit of improvement' to win a Group race. The horse is 9 and, sad, to say, I deteced in its whole apperance and performace tonight just the tiiest bit of sourness. At his age, I am now wondering if he is going off the idea of racing.

Henderson has been really annoying with this horse for years and, in my view, the owner is rather naive thinkign about Melbourne Cups etc etc.

If the horse improves enough to win a Group race then I am wrong and very well done to all. But I do not think it will and a realistic target is surely the Pitmen's Derby at Newcastle, which is a race where horses carrying a lot of weight do well in. It is also Tapeta which the horse coped with so well at Southwell.

I want to see the horse succeed but part of me wants to see it flop so the OTT hype stops. Making a nine year horse who developed a problem over hurdles into some kind of potetinal superstar on the flat at is madness = but typical of how the childish media conduct themselves nowadays. Too easily impressed and lacking the critical eye equired to analyse horse racing properly.

We shall see.

The hype over this horse is totally stupid.

The horse is the human equivalnet of just uner 40.

Now, is it lilely that a 40 year old human athlete, who is novice to an athletic event, is goling to beat anyone aged from 20 to 25? It is possible, but unlikely. But that is probably what C Hill will have to do.

Also, the horse is going to be jumping from Class 3 novice company to a Group 3 race. I just cannot see him making that transition at age 9.

Two further points

A/ They can forget the Melbourne Cup, not because the horse will not be good enough (which he is highly unlikely to be anyway) but because the Aussies are now so strict on the health of horses before the race. Remember, O'Brien having horses excluded because of 'shadows' on their x-rays? A 9 year former hurdlwr with some history of niggling, albet minor, injuries will surely not be allowed to run once x-rayed.

B/ I cannot see why the horse will not have the pace to win over 2m on the Tapaeta in the Pitmen's Derby. Of course, his handicap mark will dictate his handicap future, but surely a 2 miles really quick Champion Hurdler could cope with 2 miles on Tapeta? He may well struggle on grass, though. I concede that.

Unless the horse is showing some kind of magic on the gallops, I cannot belive how naive Henderson appears to be over this animal. And, in my view, he is leading the rather innocent owber up the graden path a bit. It has been known for trainers to do such thigs!! I have seen it first hand but cottoned on before it cost me too much cash....

Sad to say, I now want the horse to flop on the flat, be safely retired to a nice home somewhere, and all the stupid, stuopid hype to stop!!!
Report duffy March 28, 2026 6:35 AM GMT
It's ironic how when he was fit and well as a younger horse with the jumping world at his feet they chose to wrap him tightly in cotton wool, remember his barnstorming Supreme win and how it was toyed with the prospect of taking him to Ireland to face Honeysuckle, but no, not a chance of derring do back then.

Fast forward a few years and the cotton wool seems to have been lost somewhere as the horse continually throws himself to the ground and they continually send him back out to do it all over again and then when that route is finally extinguished they come up with a final desperate throw of the dice as they try to cling on to past glories.

They had the horse that could have given them so much more when the sun was shining, no point trying it now when it's pi55ing down!!
Report Blake@1658 March 28, 2026 8:43 AM GMT
