if you have a notepad already saved and you adjust it..when you close it will ask if you want changes saved automatically...it shudnt obv delete on its own..look in recycle bin to see ifs it there..

I really don't know what happened as I didn't close it down...but it just disappeared - I'm stumped
I did say I didn't save it...not even once.

Ask chat gpt, it'll take you through all the options step by step, it's my first port of call these days, my pc was not booting up correctly and then locking me out for 2 hours recently and it quickly identified that it was a £5 battery I needed replacing which sorted it, ideal for a non techy like me.

I tried AI and it pointed me towards options/solutions that weren't available.

click on start button bottom left corner screen
search for "file explorer" & click on file explorer folder
in top right hand corner of file explorer folder there's a search bar, type in ".txt"
that will bring up all notepad docs on your pc

This is a classic (and very frustrating) Notepad unsaved file situation in Windows 11.

I’ll give you the realistic answer first, then what they can try.

⚠️ The honest reality

Old-style Notepad traditionally:

does NOT auto-save

does NOT recover unsaved files after closing or crashing

So if the window truly closed, the content is usually gone.

✅ BUT — Windows 11 changed Notepad

Newer versions of Notepad (Windows 11) sometimes:

auto-save tabs

restore previous sessions

So there is a chance depending on their version.

Things they should try (in order)
1️⃣ Reopen Notepad and check tabs

Tell them to:

Open Notepad again

Look at the top for tabs

Windows 11 Notepad sometimes restores:

previously open tabs

even unsaved content

2️⃣ Check if it’s just off-screen/minimised

Sometimes it hasn’t closed at all.

Ask them to:

Press Alt + Tab → look for Notepad

Or press Windows + Tab (Task View)

Or check the taskbar for a hidden window

3️⃣ Check temporary files (long shot, but worth it)

Press Windows + R

Type:

%temp%

Look for files starting with:

~

or random .txt files

4️⃣ Check “Recent files”

In Notepad:

File → Open → Recent

(Only works if it was saved at least once — sounds like it wasn’t, but worth checking)

5️⃣ Don’t restart yet (important)

You were right to mention this.

If the PC hasn’t restarted:

there’s a tiny chance the session is still in memory

restarting would definitely kill that chance

check your recycling bin on the way back in.

Also check in task manager to see if Notepad is still running -- you might have moved its window off the edge of the screen.

could be stored in your onedrive click open a folder and down the left panel should be personal with your name in front of it look inside
