The chap who does the rugby in the post points out it’s the biggest handicap start Scotland have had at murrayfield for 20 years and goes on to tip France to score more than 35 points which they did ,I shouldn’t think anybody would believe France score 35 plus and get beat
Report Delashay March 7, 2026 5:34 PM GMT
I’m not shocked that they bet France, but I a, by the score, 90 points in one match! Most of these games in the near past have been very close.
It’s why I said there seems to be rule changes making the matches more open?

France weren’t at their best against Italy last week, they started really well against the Irish but don’t seem to be able to hold their form.

I was thinking g of backing England against them because of how bad they were against Italy last time out. The loss today means I won’t get the price I’d hoped for!Laugh

Borthwick has been trying things, we can’t have become that bad so quickly can we?

Completely agree Cider. Rugby union was my sport at school and afterwards.
It was literally the most important aspect of my life but now,  I couldn't be bothered to watch it let alone actually go to an international. It's certainly not the sport it once was.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps March 7, 2026 9:50 PM GMT

Report DixieDean60 March 7, 2026 10:01 PM GMT
That is true Slippy. I loved playing rugby and cricket at school in the 70s (rather better at the latter Grin) but do not enjoy watching them much now.

Union going professional 30 years ago began the transition to what we have today. As with many other sports the money now in the game has ruined the whole feel and spectacle of it. Sin bins, multiple substitutions, stoppages, baffling rules etc are all a turn off.
Report Cider March 7, 2026 10:48 PM GMT
Two of life's pleasures have been (almost) completely hollowed out. Sport and comedy. I suppose you could add movies to that as a third, too.

Scotland often give France a tough time in Edinburgh.
THe fast rucking game that was developed in the Scottish Lowlands was exported to New Zealand and has been the basis for the All Blacks style of play since time immemorial.
The way to overcome them, as various 'Arsenal' style England sides have demonstrated over the years is to play the game among the forwards, kick for position and kick your penalties.
If you play an open game with the Scots you are giving them half a chance. And with Finn Russell in their side you are asking for big problems.

The rules of Union are all over the place. A hotchpotch amalgamation of how the Southern hemisphere (notably AUs & NZ) want to play versus what the Northern Hemisphere plus the Saffers expect.
League is a much better game in truth. But it will never get to the same level of popularity.

Some good knowledge from thelatarps, I didn’t know that the All Blacks style derived from the Scottish way, but I appreciate the way they do it. It’s ruthless.

But that’s what I’ve been trying to say regarding the rules the ricking seems different, players aren’t cleared out of the way, there’s a lot of laying down waiting for the play to move on.
I’ve never seen so many yellow cards, safety factor is taking something out of the game. They’re consenting adults let them go at it!

And we’ve had many great players aside from Guscot, Neil Back was a terrier, Lewis Moody ol’ crazy horse another favourite (so sad to hear he has that cruel disease.)

I like Curry too, the type that fights with his face!M (as Jim Watt the boxing commentator would have said!) Laugh

One things for sure the team needs a clear out, the likes of Genge ain’t good enough, been bullied by the South Africans time and again in the scrum when we’ve met.

Rugby League has always been seen as a working class sport as per its roots, as opposed to union which has been the preserve of the middle and upper classes.
Ten of the starters for the England team yesterday went to private schools and three others to grammar.

League went professional 100 years before Union did as it was difficult for players to commit to playing without a financial incentive to compensate them for time off work, injuries sustained whilst playing etc.

I have always watched both codes but find union a harder watch these days due to reasons outlined in my earlier post. League on the other hand is much easier to follow, especially for the casual viewer, as the rules are much more straightforward. No rucks, mauls, line outs etc.

TV viewing figures are pretty good for League i believe, i read a report some time ago that stated about half of the viewers of Sky games were from the south which was interesting, considering virtually all of the teams are northern based.
Report thelatarps March 9, 2026 12:01 AM GMT
To be fair to ENgland (Welsh by the way) it is a very inexperienced squad.
The perceived wisdom is that you need a squad of players with at least 40 test caps per man at the highest level.
The international game takes a lot of getting used to, what with the refs having different interpretations to what goes on in the club game.
Last time I did a check on this Wales were the least experienced with England a close second in the 6 Nations.
So hopefully the both of us will be up there challenging the might of the Italians pretty soon...
Report jimmythewon March 9, 2026 8:26 AM GMT
Please excuse that I boringly repeat some of the post I put up about a year ago and support much of what has been said here. Rugby Union has gone vastly downhill as a spectator sport since professionalism came in and law changes made the set pieces non-competitive. 95% of set pieces are won by the team putting in. You might as well save time and restart with a play-the-ball (that's a tap penalty which must be picked up) as in rugby league. Some might have time to waste watching 20 successive rucks with the ball advancing 20 yards: I don't. Fail to see any attraction. Rugby League (miles ahead of Union in its law making) saw the problem years ago. You get 5 tackles (in union that would be 5 rucks) and if you don't immediately run the ball, the opposition is given possession.

The reason for the resurgent Scotland is that they are making fewer mistakes. They don't allow many interceptions, don'f drop the ball, don't fluff easy kicks etc in the way they did 30 years ago (might be a result of professionalism!) They also use laters who can run the ball and beat a man.

I now never watch club rugby and only Scottish Internationals (plus maybe a few other). Shame: 40 years ago the 5 Nations was the highlight of the sporting year. Now (with Grand National) it has sunk into mediocrity. The tradesmen, teacers teachers and lawyers of Scotland against the ex-public school boys of England. Fabulous. Want to see a proper rugby game? Try Utube and Wales v Scotland 1982.

Dubious ref again - what happened to the advantage England should have had prior to the last French try ?

Those missed conversions earlier were costly too. Instead of showboating when he scored his second try Chessum could have got several yards closer to the posts to make the kick easier Cry

The knock on at the end was so avoidable too, small margins.

It felt to me like a lot of close NFL games...where the team who happens to be ahead as the final whistle blows, is the winner
If that sounds like stating the obvious...what I mean is that 3 minutes before the end Team A wins, 3 minutes after Team A also wins, but at the final whistle Team B wins
Just to and fro
