It was no value tonight but won impressively. A good example of how this game is a marathon not a sprint. Loads of know-it-alls at Southwell tonight, and on TV. But backing horses at 6/4 with no form for 2 years, no experience of Tapeta, drawn 12 of 14, not run on the flat, down in trip from NH by 1/2 a mile, will lead anyone to the poorhouse over the medium- to long-term.

Proves nothing for hurdling either.

If it is 6/4 or less for the Champion Hurdle I will lay it.

If you watch really carefully and in slow-mo, its draws its front legs back very quickly and, in my view, over hurdles that means one of the legs is striking the top of the hurdle before it is fully over the obstacle.

Also, consider this: Murphy has ridden over obstacles and clearly gets on with the horse. Suppose, just suppose, conections do somethiong radical and offer Muprhy the ride in the Champion Hurdle. Would Murpy run the risk of being buried by a horse with last 4 NH figures of FF0F...Nope, not with another lucrative flat season about to begin!

So, can the horse be trusted not to fall, as well as tp actually reproduce tonight's form back over the sticks?

I would bet 4/6 it fails in the attempt.

Now, the owner wants to aim at the Melbourne Cup!

Got to say that this horse is being let down by his indecisinve and rather dreamy connections.

A novice on the AW at Southwell is a tremendous leap to the Melbourne Cup - one of the hottest handicaps in the world.

Also, the Aussies have become paranoid about horses being injured in the race (ask Aidan O'Brien) and do not enjoy foreign raiders taking the booty out of the country!

Hence, the horse would have to be 100% sound with every single part of its anatomy to get in the race - even if it did eventualy qualify. My bet is that, given its previous issues, it would not be allowed to run - and with form figures over jumps of ff0f, me thinks the Aussies would be desperate to find a reason for it not to run anyway -  even given it is a flat race!

No, the connections are in cloud cuckoo land over this horse.

Should it run over hurdles again, fall and kill itself, racing will be held in total contempt by the mass media - so surely a campaign on the flat is best?

To me, the Norhthumberland Plate (Pitmen's Derby) at Newcastle is an obvious target. Tapeta again and a race where class horses carrying very big weights do have a good record.

One final question, though.

Given how it won so well on Friday, why was a campaign on the flat over long distances never considered three or fours years ago? By now, it may have risen to Group Class on the level and amassed considerably more prize money.
Report uptheirons February 22, 2026 12:55 PM GMT
Unfortunately you don't own the horse,The Knight.
The Owner has the right to chose when and where CH runs and I suspect he will be at Cheltenham.
He has been in the game for many years and is a thoroughly decent man,ood luck to him.

Probably for the same reason any classy hurdler in the past hasn't, because it's a jumps horse with connections wanting to scale the heights in that sphere.

Imagine, how strange it would have seemed to every one concerned if the moment the horse crossed the line in the Supreme and the owner was posed the question as to next years champion hurdle and he replied, No I don't think so, he's a superstar, well run im on the flat from now on.
Report The Knight February 22, 2026 1:21 PM GMT
uptheirons...he may well be a decent guy and, naturally, it is up to him where to go with his on horse. BUT, that does not mean he should not be pragmatic with the animal.

What I really hope he does is closely, and I mean closely, think about what would happen if the horse ran in the Champion Hurdle and god forbid, fell and was either killed or badly injured. There was enough fuss on Friday night about the horse, so Cheltenham and the Champion Hurdle will see the world's media very highly focused on the race.

If something untoward happened, the consquencves for the spoprt would be dreadful. And that is what I hope the horse's connections realise because everyone in raciong does have an obligation to the sport as a whole.

Anyway, the horse has already done the business over hurdles, so why not a flat campaign where it might be able to prove itself at very high levels all over again? I cannot see the Melbourne Cup being realistic, though.

But, all aspectds of lifer in the UK now seem ruled by emotion and not praticality, so I suspect this might not be any different!
Report uptheirons February 22, 2026 1:31 PM GMT
I suspect that Buckley and Hendo will make a decision this week and not be swayed by "the bleeding hearts" who think it is their right to dictate to an Owner.
I hope that it doesn't run at Cheltenham because I couldn't Back or Lay it
Report The Knight February 25, 2026 9:05 PM GMT
Uutheirons,

Well, either the connections haved bowed to the 'bleeding hearts' or have taken the pragmatic view of risk against reward with the reputation of racing as a whole well up in their list of considerations. But most of all they have done what they think is BEST for the horse. Good on them.

With respect, it is very unfair for you to start insulting those of us who have long appreciated the bigger picture of C Hill in relation to falling at Chelthenham again and the sport taking a huge battering if it was injured or killed. It riles me that there are so many on this forum who want to be insulting the moment anyone puts up a view that does not agree with theirs.

As for 'the right to dictate to the owner' Sorry, that is tripe. Expressing a well-thought out opinion is not dictating to anyone. If people are not allowed to that, then we do not have a democracy anymore.

I also note you did not want the horse to run in the CH because 'you could not back it or lay it'. I really do not get that. At 66 years old I still do not know what to do over a lot of things in life but that does mean I do not want them to take place!

Now, to end, here is a further thought about C Hill. As you say, totally up to the owner what to do with the horse but he and Henderson surely need to think a bit more about a flat campaign based around Group Races and possibly the Melbourne Cup.

The horse is a nine year old and, in the normal scheme of things, will not have that much improvement left in him. I wil be surprised if its improves enough to beat at Group level one or two other, but younger, horses from the top stables.

Thus, what we might see is the horse run up a string of placed efforts on the flat before possibly nicking a low class Group 3 or Listed later on in the year. I do not want to see that with a horse that used to be so good over hurdles. So I implore its connections to go down the handicap route and aim the horse at the Pitmen's Derby.

In that race, it would carry a big weight but it is a race where staying stalwarts of the past have done exactly that when winning. Also, the race is run on Tapeta, which the horse is now very proven on going by its Southwell win.

C Hill was a brilliant hurdler but those days are gone now. Hence, let's see if it can be equally good on the flat - but in races it has the most chance of winning. It is called being pragmatic, not being a 'bleeding heart'.

And as for why was it never tried on the flat when younger. Well, I am still curious about that. Was its breeding, or its demenaour, or something else, that made the conections aim for a NH career. Of course, perhaps the owner just prefers the jumpers and so wanted to go over hurdles from day one. Agreeing with you how it is the owner's right, I would totally get that. And it succeeded, but now a different code of racing beckons.

I wish them well with the horse and hope it does win a Group Race - which is one for the anoraks on here. Has a champion hurdler ever gone on to then win at Group level on the flat? I am too lazy to go through my Timeforms annuals to see but Sea Pigeon springs to mind as a possible?
