Big interview next to a double decker bus about the National weights and "welcoming the huge crowd at the launch". I counted at least 20 and half were kids on half term.

The National may be easier than it was but when you see the so called fences on some park courses it is still pretty fearsome by comparison.
Report wondersobright February 17, 2026 2:20 PM GMT
what aspects make them fearsome?

The racing media will cover this anyway; no-one else cares, so what's the point in these PR stunts?

Sageform or anyone for many years I’ve heard the term park course what actually is a park course ?
Report sageform February 17, 2026 2:35 PM GMT
wonder, many of the fences these days don't reach the top of a horses legs. MRasen today are a bit bigger than most. The Aintree ones are still much higher but they are softer.

Sandown Park, Hurst Park, Kempton Park, Prestbury Park, Fontwell Park. Courses built in a park by a big landowner originally. They are typically easy courses although Cheltenham is the exception. They call the Mildmay course at Aintree a park course but that is a misnomer imo.

there isn't 1 tricky fence on the course now
all drops filled in
height trimmed off a few fences

might surprise you to hear becher's is now 4ft 10in & that's on the 1st circuit before the birch has been knocked off the top

Haydock and Wetherby both used to be a good test.

No idea why the h'capper messes about with the weights these days, nonsense of a race

Also in hell the quality of midweek national hunt was very good at both tracks
