Good afternoon Guys,
A new year (albeit belated) so a new thread, following on from the initial one i started in April 2018 and repeated every year since.
The past few years have been dismal in terms of P/L lay selections, generally due to mega workload and travelling. Although the P/L selections reduced dramatically there were winners (and losers) not only from myself, but others that actually like to discuss horse racing. I really appreciate the efforts from those involved and the thread per se appears to still be popular even if the forum isn't what it was.
The P/L lay selection format is based on only one post in any given day (to prevent chasing) bookmaker odds of 5/2 or under and matched to win a stake of £50 (not liability). Overall, the threads since 2018 are in profit, but posting a P/L for the past few years is actually meaningless due to the few selections, but at least there is transparency and all on a single thread.

The lay post selection Legacy Link (13/8f) finished 7th in the Ribbledale on Thursday, i wish all lay shorties ran like that.
I had a very relaxing 10 day break in West London returning home on Monday night, much longer than planned due to Lady Of Clover not running at Windsor a week earlier. After going to Yarmouth to watch her run on the Wednesday and staying overnight, it was pointless going back to the office for one day, so i extended my stay yet again. I mentioned before that i wanted to go to Chantilly for the Prix Diane on Sunday and i could have gone from London and returned home from there of course, but although it was a decent card, i was only really interested in one runner, Diamond Necklace (a particular favourite of mine, regular readers know i'm a big fan) and i was content to stay where i was and watch online.
Royal Ascot has been good to me this week, not so many bets and most of them would have been picked by the majority on here anyway so i won't bore you with the all the aftertimes (there's enough on another thread
). Tuesday was a day that could have been well rewarded though, but was one of those days we all experience on occasion, close but not close enough, with a couple of runners i had seen on course in their previous races at Newbury and Longchamp, More Thunder and Rayevka EW in singles backed at much better odds the previous day. Both finished a close 2nd, 0.5L and a head. I made a profit, albeit small, but the one that really escaped was a fun tenner EW treble including Bow Echo. 
Not going to Chantilly to back Diamond Necklace actually did me a favour, she was 8/11 with many of the books and 1.72 on here compared with the PMU of 1.50. My best result of the week; in my opinion AOB's best 3 year old filly and would beat Precise over a mile, although i can't see them meeting. I also think it's highly unlikely she goes for the Arc (odds of 14/1 should not be taken) but she could run there during the same weekend.
Before returning home i left a few bob treble in the World Cup, Spain, Argentina and England to win their respective groups, but it didn't get off to a good start with the outright favourites only drawing with Cabo Verde (i couldn't even tell you where the country is) and not playing well at all. They will probably need to beat Uruquay on 27th for my bet to have any chance, although i could trade it by then.
If there is a football bet this evening i feel Netherlands will beat Sweden, even though i love the latter country. They are not a bad side, but were flattered by the 5-1 win against a very poor Tunisia and i expect the Netherlands will recover from their own performance against Japan.
On to racing this afternoon, average meetings for a Saturday and even the Royal Ascot card looks a bit lack lustre. If i studied the form for the Wokingham (17.00) until month end i probably wouldn't find the winner, but large field handicaps over 6f at Ascot are not my type of betting races anyway, other than a customary fun EW bet. My lucky pin has fallen on Realign who ran at this meeting last year, albeit over 5f (unplaced). Lightly raced for a 4 year old, much more suited to 6f, firm going not an issue and won well after being well backed in a class 3 handicap LTO. Of course the draw will play a part, but stall 10 is not really a negative.
In the G1 Jubilee stakes all eyes will be on the Australian sprinter Jolistar who is possibly the best over there and certainly in form, unbeaten this year with a hat-trick of wins at Randwick including a couple of group 1's. We've seen several decent sprinters come over from Australia and win at RA, Black Caviar the best of them and there's no doubt Jolistar is very good, but i also think we tend to overate them on occasion. She's not even highest rated in the field that is not a bad one, never raced outside of her home country, has to acclimatize and will Ascot actually suit. With exception of Flemington, 6f sprints in Australia race over a bend and in 3 runs there has only won once. i'm not suggesting she can't win on a straight track of course (she did) but there are several factors that backers at 6/4 need to consider before lumping on. I laid last night at slightly higher odds, but a risk nevertheless.
One i feel could outrun double figure odds (currently 24 for the win) is the French trianed Sajir who won a G1 beating Lazzat last year. Won a G3 at Chantilly LTO, consistant and rarely runs a poor race. Even 4/TBP pays 3.8 on here.
Not much else i fancy strongly and considering a 33c temperature later i will not be watching much racing. I can look for a lay post selection before going out, but nothing jumped off the page earlier and Joliestar is a risky play.

I noticed the moderators have not allowed my summary post yesterday for whatever reason, so i will try to post it in parts, although i'm a bit pushed for time with a couple of meetings later. I also saw a post from Jumper45 removed.
Glasgow, i upset the fragile feelings of another woke poster who i will not name as he will only report me again. My post on the Prix Diane thread was sarcastic and a p take on his purported aftertimed bets

In my selection post yesterday, i mentioned the Royal Ascot card looked a bit lack lustre, but there were certainly a few exciting finishes including the QE Jubilee stakes where my lay selection Joliestar (15/8f) finished 3rd in a bunch finish. To be fair, the mare ran well, but it's the winning line where races are won and in these 6f sprints, you could re-run the race several times and get different winners. Irrespective of her reputation and the closeness to winning, her odds were too short for such a race in my opinion.
Backers of the EW selection Sajir (20/1) probably knew they had lost their stakes even before the stalls opened. Not for the first time at this meeting he was very jittery during the loading process, reluctant to enter the stalls and TV viewers will have seen him lash out, knocking a couple of stalls handlers to the ground. Once the stalls opened, he was slowly away and never got into the race, so it's best to strike a line through this form.
As for the Wokingham, as mentioned not my type of betting medium and if i had to rely on these typical handicaps for income, i would be living in a cardboard box and even then i would have to steal it from a fruit and veg stall
. Realign (12/1) wasn't disgraced by any means, finishing 8th, beaten just over 4L, but RA handicaps are so difficult to win and on a course where the draw often plays a major part.
Horse racing often gets negative press for several reasons, but the 5 days at RA this past week have been superb and without question a showcase to the world, quite possibly one of the best flat racing festivals anywhere.
Netherlands did the business in the world cup football, easily beating my 'adopted' Sweden country 5-1 and showed the gulf in class between the two sides. The latters' opening game against a very poor Tunisia on Monday when they won 5-1 flattered them and the form was devalued after a 4-0 drubbing last night.

Irrespective of this, i really hope Sweden qualify, the country is part of me and always will be, more so considering how long i lived/worked there, still consider it my home, returning every 4-6 weeks or so for a weekend break.
Our Fellowship Racing syndicate will be interested in the 15.26 Brighton where Rockafeller Skank is going for a 5th win on the spin. This one beat our filly at Yarmouth recently making a mockery of her 25 rating and has won 3 more very easily, albeit all in classified stakes. Things will be more difficult going into a handicap and conceding 18lb to the bottom weight Lucky Sevens, another who beat us 3 runs ago, although we may have been unlucky that day.
I will not post the rest of my Sunday summary as the moderators want to review a post i made about our syndicate; why, i have no idea, it did not break any rules whatsoever.

It's crazy, it wouldn't be so bad if the moderators simply removed any offending isses and allowed the rest. I'm happy to continue posting and 11,000 views in a little over 4 months means they are still read by many, but if i was stopped, i wouldn't be bothered one iota. I spend much more time on my WhatsApp group that consists of quite a few decent posters anyway and i'm in email contact with Alan Potts and few others often.
The forum is defintely not what it was back in time, and many decent posters simply don't bother or have moved to other outlets.

As we all know there are certain posters who do very little apart from throwing insults, posting 1.01 beaten who cares about that, has put off dozens of genuine guys from contributing on the forum[s].Yet they the moderators do absolutely nothing, it appears they are not concerned. Presume they are putting money before satisfaction of the public who WERE reading and providing their share of written contributions to the forum. Please ignore any outsp[oken individuals who are looking for confrontation, I read your postings with great interest. Be lucky..

A busy week so no posts for several days, although that's quite normal anyway and has been for a few years since my client/workload increased.
It appears someone is having a petulant tantrum and throwing toys out of his pram. My EW selection Sajir in the QEII Jubilee Stakes was ridiculed as a 'mug' bet, so to defend my case, here is my reasoning.
On April 7th, Sajir was beaten a head (level weights) by Stolen Kiss in a 5.5f Listed race at Deauville, it was his season debut, but the winner was race fit with 2 previous races including a winner. I'm not really a fan of large field handicaps from a betting perspective, but i often put one up out of interest. The Northumberland handicap looks as trappy as always, but i think Dancing in Paris could be an EW with most books paying 5 places and a couple even 6.
Runner-up in the race last year, but only beaten a neck from a similar low draw (3 then, 4 today) that is a positive over CD. 4 lb higher, but his record ovver the trip is consistant, even though not winning. A busy week, although they often are and while the aerospace/defence industries need my services i'm happy for the daily workload to be hectic, it pays for me to travel often for racing.
To recap the week gone, the Irish Derby was yet another classic won by AOB with Benvenuto Cellini who won comfortably in the end. A G2 winner over 8f as a 2 year old, with another in the G3 Chester Vase over a tad longer and now a G1. Unbeaten as a 3 year old and beating the Epsom Derby winner will read good in the stud book and he's certainly better than an 'old boat' as described by one on here. The KG/QEII will be next and that will provide a better indication of how good he is, although i'm not suggesting he will. Talk of the Leger is nonsense in my opinon, there's far more chance he will go to York and the Breeders cup, although the 3rd home at the Curragh will probably end up at Doncaster.
Looking at other winners on the Curragh card, the one i want to be on next time out whereever she runs is the filly Alpha, yet another potential classic winner off the production line at Ballydoyle. Impressive, with sectionals and a finishing speed figure that would indicate she could be decent. The best 2 year old filly we have seen in my opinion, although she will have far stronger opposition in front of her.
Perhaps the biggest cheer on the day was for the well loved Big Gossey who reinforced his liking for the course where all her 7 wins were gained. 9 years old and still thrives on the track, i know she's the apple of one decent posters eyes who i know well.
Moving on to last night at Chepstow, our filly Lady Of Clover finished 3rd, her first run since Yarmouth where she picked up a couple of superficial injuries during the race. Oisin mentioned in the post-race interview/video there were excuses, although i don't want to state them here out of respect for the team. She's picking up place money and has won already, so no major disappointments. For such a low level syndicate, we certainly can't complain about the jockeys that have ridden for us over the past few years, 3 champions and a potential one in Billy Loughnane, not many could say the same.

Looking at the cards this afternoon, something for everyone, my only issue is the card at Sandown could have been better considering the history of the Eclipse, 4 handicaps are too many and even the field in the featur race could have been better. There's a similar situation at Saint Cloud tomorrow with the G1 Grand Prix and Calandagan et all with 4 handicaps.

If a AOB runner closes in on another to prevent a rival from winning and gain an advantage to a stablemate, this is wrong and should be punished accordingly; however, if a horse moves off a true line without hinderance to others, i do not see an issue. Not many horse bets for my during the past week that is not unusual anyway, but i've done OK on the EC football. I mentioned here i had a few bob treble on Spain, Argentina and England to win their respective groups that didn't get off to a good start with Spain 0-0 and watching the last leg, England struggle for 60 minutes didn't help my BP, but thankfully Harry Kane made it a profit. My largest bet of the week (before this morning) but only even money the three. I've backed a few others in singles with mixed success, but one loser i had was Netherlands to win outright (19 on here) who i backed after they win the grop, only to go out at the next hurdle. Sods law, but i have since replaced them with Colombia (34) who won ladt night, but the odds have not changed much. Only a couple of tenners for fun, so i will let it ride and only trade if they reach the final.

Cork is essentially flat and all his wins have been on stiffer or undulating tracks.

At no time was he 8/1 or 12/1. The SP was 20/1 and on here i know he was 38 and 30 for the win and 3.95 for the place. How i know is obvious.

As for Gallic racing, i've been a fan since i first went to Longchamp in 1980, have probably seen about 75%-80% on the Arcs since and go for other meetings, including the Guineas and trials to name a few. Several guys in the team, including myself actually have a contact in high profile stable, we actually met him/her a couple of years ago. I'm not suggesting we get information, we don't, or ask for it, but i communicate via chat app and met him/her at Longchamp last year, so i know more than many.

I’ve only watched the race once but have noticed something interesting from just seeing the photo after the stalls opened.
What I saw is reflected in the finish.
Those drawn high who were perceived to be at a disadvantage were in fact advantaged by how the race was run.

A good day for the thread yesterday with both lays mentioned beaten, Ashfoora (9/4) at Sandown who finished last of 9 and Likedbymike (15/8) 3rd of 5 at Naas. Constitution River won and the one that went down was the EW outsider Classic who didn't get a clear run 2f out, but wouldn't have won from where he was anyway. Pat Dobbs decided to go in between runners at the 2 pole, but that avenue closed; a better one was to the left, also he was slightly hampered a furlong out, but i'm not in the habit of critiquing jockeys.
My afternoon was really all about a particular favourite of mine, Constitution River and i was reasonably confident beforehand, at least in the context of a G1. He looked superb in the paddock, a large framed scopey sort, relaxed, although a glint of sweat below the saddle cloth. His stablemate Flushing Meadow set a fast pace, in fact the 2f and 3 furlongs show sub-11 second sectionals when he was 6L-7L clear. CR travelled well in the race and although briefly held in off the bend 3f out, Ryan simply moved out approaching the 3f pole and went past Gethin with ease. At the 2f pole i was shouting for Ryan to press the button and he duly obliged with his customary good turn of foot, the race was over from that point winning by 3L. He put in the fastest sectionals at 8f and 10f, with only 0.4 between him and the runner up at 9f.
If we wanted to be pedantic it wasn't a strong Eclipse and a small field at that, but he can only beat what's there. Nevertheless, how he travelled in the race, went past the front group with distain and in a time that was easily fastest on the day at 2.57 seconds faster than standard, clearly shows he's still an improving 3 year old and in my opinion the best middle distance horse in his age group. Timeform agree, raising him to 128.
There will be those that crab the performance, and would even if Ryan stopped at the furlong pole to sign autographs before continuing on to win, it's in their nature and will continue until he does lose in order to say 'i told you so' and massage their own ego.
Is he a superstar as the RP mentions ? a definitive no, at least not yet, but if he goes to York and wins against Ombudsman and Calandagan, then mops up a couple of champion stakes, then the accolade may be warranted. I never buy into the hype from the trainer, but i totally understand he's the spokesman of the best thoroughbred breeding operation there's ever been, or likely to be. Say what you like about him, but the records he's setting are simply phenominal, there will not be another like him.
On to this afternoon, typical Sunday afternoon fayre, although there is a class 3 handicap at each of the domestic meetings. Further afield, Calandagan will be at short odds to redeem his glowing reputation in the Grand Prix at Saint Cloud, a race he won in 2025. I expect him to win, but will not be backing him, instead i will play 3 places on one of my favourite French fillies, Aventure (currently 7/1 with the books) on here. She never gets the credit deserved, but in 15 runs, only twice out of the first 3. A G1 winner and runner-up in an Arc. Very genuine, always runs her race and has a good turn of foot. On form, she can't beat the favourite, but she can place.
I rarely have large bets after a decent win the previous day anyway unless it's a festival where i really fancy something. CR wasn't my largest bet this year (Diamond Necklace was) but no reason to try and win even more today. I don't fancy anything strongly anyway, although i do have a potential lay post selection that i will post separately if i decide to with it.

You are correct, Big Boosey is a gelding, but i noticed the error and corrected it in a post at 11.58. I made two other errors as well, but one was simplay typing.
The SP was 20/1 and on here i know he was 28 (not 38 as i posted) and 30 for the win and 3.95 for the place. How i know is obvious.
I also stated the sire of Constitution River was St Marks Basilica, this is incorrect, it's Wootton Bassett. I type by memory, unless it's sectionals that i obviousy don't carry in my head each day, sometimes i get it wrong, as simple as that.

For my troll, i have no idea what bet you are referring to, but as a final post on the matter, here is part of my post (in full) from Saturday June 20th 09.59 (in italics).
In the G1 Jubilee stakes all eyes will be on the Australian sprinter Jolistar who is possibly the best over there and certainly in form, unbeaten this year with a hat-trick of wins at Randwick including a couple of group 1's. We've seen several decent sprinters come over from Australia and win at RA, Black Caviar the best of them and there's no doubt Jolistar is very good, but i also think we tend to overate them on occasion. She's not even highest rated in the field that is not a bad one, never raced outside of her home country, has to acclimatize and will Ascot actually suit. With exception of Flemington, 6f sprints in Australia race over a bend and in 3 runs there has only won once. i'm not suggesting she can't win on a straight track of course (she did) but there are several factors that backers at 6/4 need to consider before lumping on. I laid last night at slightly higher odds, but a risk nevertheless.
One i feel could outrun double figure odds (currently 24 for the win) is the French trianed Sajir who won a G1 beating Lazzat last year. Won a G3 at Chantilly LTO, consistant and rarely runs a poor race. Even 4/TBP pays 3.8 on here.
My account statement shows i laid Jolistar the previous evening, and again at 08.41 and 11.14 on the morning. I backed Sajir at 10.37 and 11.31 at odds of 28 and 30 respectively. The horse opened 18/1 on course and his SP was 20/1, exactly as i stated. At the time i posted he was 24 on here. I also backed the 4TBP at 11.04. I do not post BS or exaggerated claims on here. Afternoon Andrew . Wondered if you had any thoughts on the German derby ? Only picked up that it was on from Luck on Sunday as the card doesn't seem to feature on the usual websites-is the racecourse worth a visit sometime?

Yes i went though the Derby field (14.43) last night, albeit not in great detail as BF don't cover it, but the shops do. I look at German racecards for the big races and have been to München-Riem several times, i even saw a future Arc winner there once. The only course in Germany i've gone to, but i want to see Baden-Baden one day, it's the Ascot of the country.
Hamburg racecourse is a turf, oval (not slow bends like Chelmsford) like many tracks in the country. Right handed, generally flat with a 2.7f furlong home straight. Over 12f, a middle draw is preferred, low is a slight negative.
As for the race per se, the 3 times group winner and likely favourite is Gostam (i backed at München) who has to be considered after his run in the Prix Jockey Club at Longchamp behind Constitution River. He wasn't disgraced by any means but is probably better with a bit of cut in the ground. Drawn in 20, same as the winner Palladium last year. The RP states the going will be soft, i can't comment on that, but like England, Germany has experienced a lot of hot weather recently, even in the North, although it's more temperate now.
The one i like, but not betting on, is the the only non-German runner Bay of Brilliance trained by Ralph Beckett who finished 4th at Epsom, but prior to this had won the Lingfield Derby trial. He will need to be alert at the off as he's drawn in 6. One who could run well at a decent price (20/1 in a couple of books) is the lightly raced Loucas who was 3rd in the 2000 Guineas, but has never run over the trip before.
I follow the local racing, but nowhere near the extent of the French racing scene that i love and wouldn't have a clue in the handicaps etc.

I prefer pattern races simply as the form is more consistant and reliable, additionally it's assumed that the majority are there to win. Alan Potts has mentioned on here before that backing at evens is simply winning a stake on the next bet, a valid point of course, and at those odds you need a high strike rate, although i don't always back at such short odds. I also have favourites that i tend to follow, Aventure who runs later a typical example, but for much higher stakes, the likes of Diamond Necklace and Constitution River to name a couple, but one i want to follow as well is the AOB trianed filly Alpha.

Won easily LTO, but 3 of the fences were omitted in the straight due to low sun, so a total of 6 were dolled off, leaving 8. Not many got into the race and the favourite jumped like a pig. If he could replicate his August 2024 form, he could make all and run these ragged, but can he. A 7lb penalty, conceding weight and up to class 3 will make it more difficult; hopefully no low sun.

The lay Fringall D*ke (5/6f) finished 2nd of the 3 runners, it's always nice to get a shortie beaten, even more so at odds-on. Jumping to the right didn't help his cause and there were 6 more fences to jump this time as i pointed out.
The usual run-of-the-mill meetings in the early part of the forthcoming week, so it's almost certain i will not be backing anything, but there could be a lay or 2. Failing that, i will not be posting, that is actually more often than not during the week these days.
The Debenhams July meeting at Newmarket starts on Thursday, so once again we shall be seeing more of the Ballydoyle stars, but it's too early to look at the entries of course.
I've already made arrangements for my next course visit, the Qatar Goodwood festival that starts on 28th, although i arrive in London on the morning after and will go then and possibly the 30th for the Sussex and Nassau stakes respectively, hoping to see Bow Echo and Diamond Necklace (if she runs). One of my favourite UK flat courses after Ascot although i haven't been since the Nassau in 2023. In August i plan to go to York if Constitution River runs in the Juddmonte that will be some race if the main 3 are declared.
In the football tonight i've layed Brasil HT/FT, but i'm not playing or watching the England game. It's very difficult to predict the outcome of the latter, but the longer the game goes without Mexico being in front, the much better our chances will be as the hostile crowd become impatient. I have a feeling we will qualify that will p*ss off Germans on the Aerospace complex, hence subjected to some banter from yours truly, something Mastercard can't buy.
