one bad run can be forgiven especially if a feasable excuse is put up , that weatherby run was obviously not her true running . she was lucky in the champion hurdle but was a good 2nd to state man at punchestown confirming she was probably the 2nd best hurdler  of last season , the front 3 in the betting all had questions to answer in one form or another ,  it was a toss of a coin which of the 3 would win and all were short enough  golden ace also had a question mark but she was 22/1 and 30 odd on here .
Report Andrew-In-Sweden November 30, 2025 11:55 AM GMT
WD layers of CH and also to Foyleswar for putting the winner up at a deceent price. Ihere were reasons for backing or laying the favourite, but obviously a risk considering the jumping issues that once again proved costly. Considering close proximity of the 3 finishers including the outsider Nemean Lion (rated 151) who was in contention on the run-in, maybe the front 2 in the betting would have fought out the finish, who knows. Unfortunately, we never will.

He can't be considered the best ever, but will always be my favourite hurdler and i've seen some good ones over the years. I lost backing the 2TBP, won on the lay of Anzadam (a losing race) but he doesn't owe me anything.
Report punchestown November 30, 2025 12:02 PM GMT
As well as his 3 falls CH got very low at a couple of its winning runs including his Champion Hurdle and Aintree Hurdle wins that year so his jumping has been a concern for a while now but was kind of brushed over because it was still winning.

Report sageform November 30, 2025 12:26 PM GMT
Well done Foyles. Impeccable logic and all you had to ignore was the stable form which often does not apply to grade 1 horses. I admit to giving CH one more chance after listening to yet another Henderson sales pitch. After watching CH yesterday I believe that he is even less interested in racing than he was last year.
Report howard November 30, 2025 12:33 PM GMT
If you think it's his interest in racing that's the problem you can lay him on the flat too.
Report FOYLESWAR November 30, 2025 12:35 PM GMT
thanks sageform and others yes its looking like racing is becoming something of a chore ,the bad falls have left a mental scar maybe creating an uncertainty at his hurdles causing the mistakes .
Report sageform November 30, 2025 12:44 PM GMT
howard, not necessarily. If he runs in a 12 furlong flat maiden against nothing better than a 70 rating. He might see that as a racecourse gallop and just canter round. But if you owned him, would you want to do that?

Report duffy November 30, 2025 1:09 PM GMT
Didn't CH choose to go on and jump at least one other hurdle after the fall, wouldn't be of interest normally but perhaps is when we are considering wether he has a mental issue with jumping.

In many decades of following the game, I don't think I've ever NOT wanted a hurdler go chasing.
I fully believe it's a terrible idea and I really hope connections give him an easy time and
try picking up a few staying group races come the flat season...and I think a French campaign
beckons as it's not such a competitive division and a softer surface is always likely.

thanks yes, Mellottie was trained by Mary Reveley. I knew it was a woman trainer. She started off in a bumper, then a hurdle or 2, then went down to a mile on the flat and became a legend. Plenty of flat horses have been dual purpose but very few that start in a bumper. CH needs 2 low suns in the sky to turn a hurdle into a flat race.

Not sure there are any flat maidens worth less than £3000 to the winner but still not worth the effort surely? If he won in a  very fast time they might be encouraged to wait for a valuable flat race next year. The fall of TNL was different in that he was tiring under pressure and having his first ever hurdle race over 2 miles so going a lot quicker than in any of his novice races. If he did it again it would be a worry.
