How is it I see loads of them who have been mutilated every day?
Ear cropping and tail docking has only been banned in certain countries (UK and much of Europe, I think). Is it possible they've been imported?

And there is no justification for docking. Mostly its cosmetic and only seen on certain breeds
A tail is not an optional extra. One of the charms of a hound is it cannot lie. The tail gives them away. It is also important for balance-watch a dog running around and how its tail is like a propellor. Take it away and it loses balance
Also the tail signals to other dogs if it is submissive or aggressive or playful but remove it and a big narsty dog will be unsure and might well attack it. So your precious little pooch is in danger of being eaten because you followed the convention of lopping its tail off. Well done you mug
Why not chop a leg off? They will keep it quiet

The Romans took a contrary view when they left the Rottweilers to guard their Camps,Busy. I have also never encountered a Dobermann with a balance problem whilst running and they can still wag the remaining stump

I’ve had one docked (way before it became illegal) and one undocked. It seemed strange seeing them with tails for the first few years.
For a Doberman I think the docked tail looks more aesthetically pleasing. I don’t see many of them these days, the ones I do see all have tails though.

Its not about wagging. Its part of the creature. lopping it off is mutilation and you might want to watch how useful it is when hounds are tearing around. And its used as a means of communication but you want to remove it and potentially place it in danger? bollox
I have asked dog walkers about this and they all agree its idiotic, but most claim thats what the dog was like before they got it and they wouldnt have had it done themselves
And the Romans werent especially into animal, or human welfare
And what if you found no legs aesthetically pleasing, chop em all off? No walkies requrired

How many people with mutilated dogs use them to guard their camp iyo? I never mentioned the effing Romans. I said it was totally uneccesary mutilation and you were unable to come up with any justification so you produced some irrelevant cobblers

I had 2 birches, think the first one was probably the runt of the litter, was very timid and skittish, didn't grow to size of other Dobies. The 2nd one was wonderful such a noble looking dog and would have protected me with her life, no doubt. She wouldn't stand to have a litter and unfortunately developed mammary cancer. Broke my heart when I had to have her put down. Both came with tails docked, think they do it not long after birth but ears weren't cropped and looked lovely with floppy ears.

Dogs are great for many reasons but the inbreeding of defects into them, which is what makes them into a particular breed, is idiotic. You are accentuating a defect over and over because the Kennel Clubs decided what each breed should look like and its unhealthy
Dogs were bred for a particular job, ie mastiffs for gaurding and jack russells and bloodhounds for hunting but now those reasons are gone and they are bred for what they look like, hence massive inbreeding that produces dogs that cannot breathe, like bulldogs, and their lifespan is massively reduced, and uncomfortable while it lasts
None of the dogs we see would be arrived at by natural selection. They are Frankenstein creations and would revert to their origin if left alone
The Kennel Club should be abolished

I don’t see docking tails as particularly cruel. I don’t think there’s ever been a definitive answer on how much it hurts either. Plenty of dogs get tail injuries, especially ones with big, strong tails.
What’s your verdict on circumcision, Mitolo? (Yes, I know, you deny it, doesn’t make it true!).

Well, thats quite a question despite being addressed to the dear departed but I will endeavour to do it justice
I doubt the pain lasts too long in a young dog, but I dont know. But it is hardly the point
It is part of their anatomy and why remove it? There is simply no justification. It is mutilation and I repeat, its a necessary part of the hound. They did not evolve that way just to annoy your aesthetic sensibilities
I luvva mutt, which is why I get the ravin ump with all this nonsense. They do a great job for humanity, why harm them? and you cannot deny thats what this is. Dogs also get leg injuries(theres at least 3 I see often hobbling around on 3 legs) but thats what happens unfortunately when they get run over. Let them get tail injuries also
The tail is as important as the ears. so leave the fecking fing alone. Simple
I am in favour of circumcision, preferably from the head

I don't need or even want a dog for protection but I love the way Dobies are so in-tune with and bonded to their owners. As someone else said, they're aalso such noble looking animals.
If I do get a dog, I still think it will be a labrador. A Dobie might be too much of a handful, especially for someone who's never had a dog before! (Although my partner has.)

Eh, you did include the word Romans in your post of 17.56. I agree on your predominant theme in your 19.07 posts. Great question kenbo. 19.37. I inherited a collie cross whose tail had been amputated through injury. As irons say it still wagged its stump and was most endearing when it did. Crufts should be shunned by all serious dog lovers, imv.

A dog having its tail amputated would be painful. It would be on meds, a cone around its head for some time to stop it licking.
A five day old puppy has a tail like a shoe lace.

I think I might have a very slight underlying fear that the animal might turn on me. I know this is highly unlikely but I'd be concerned that the dog would sense this and that maybe the relationship would be damaged.

There is simply no need for it. Doggies are mankinds best friend for all sorts of reasons
The fact youa are consistently overloking is that the mutt does not deserve to be deprived of its tail
Why this has to be repeated I do not know
I am now boring myself; next time you are out and about, look at dogs running around and watch the tail. Its important for their balance, as you use your arms when running. It also sends signals to other dogs whether it is hostile or not

I had one who wouldn’t travel in a car without howling the whole trip, hated dogs loved humans. Another who hated human males and couldn’t be looked in the eye for any length of time but had a huge personality. Stump by virtue of a puppy mistreatment. We were bereft when he went. The current one won’t c hit ( inconveniently ) in the garden. Rescues, they all have a history which can only be guessed at. We used to go out of our way to foster from a very well known organisation but would never do it again. The last twice the dogs we took away were ill. We ended up falling out because they simply wouldn’t believe us. Some charity - company cars coming out of their ears, As you say, you form bonds which the dog less do not grasp, understand. My wife had a stroke, couldn’t walk unaided initially. Her whole recovery process was about her being able to get home and be able to walk her dog. That ambition and determination saw her go through all the rehab., physio etc, with a goal in mind. And she has achieved it. After a fashion. Brilliant what they give us. Brilliant. “The average dog is a nicer person than the average person”!

If you see a dog and are unsure of its intentions, the tail will tell the tail
If its wagging, you know its harmless, if its between its legs, its submissive and no danger. If its upright maybe its aggressive or wary
No tail and you dont know, nor do other dogs

My point about the dog turning was specifically regarding a Dobie. I know any dog can turn but with other breeds, I wouldn't feel any apprehension.
Sorry to hear about your wife but pleased she's recovered.

Dogs are companions. They help lonely people, they are brought into hospitals to improve peoples mental health. guide dogs for the blind(even though Im not a fan) to hearing dogs, sniffer dogs that help plod and the armed services detect drugs and bombs and emergency services that get people out of collapsed buildings
And they dont want much, just feeding. Thats it

They help all people - lonely or otherwise. And thanks for your kind words nick. She’s doing o.k. We were lucky. It happened at 9.am which meant we spotted it quick, got treatment quick and life is just a bit slower now. But it is life!

It would be massive odds for a dog to turn on his master. It will adore you, Nick. Unconditionally.
Mitolo, you are getting very boring. Have you ever had a dog? You talk a good yarn but don’t sound at all like a dog owner.

my old man used to go the animal shelter and ask for the next dog that was due to be shot. he got some wonky ones but after a while they calmed down and were fine. its the owners. if you have one of these things and behave normally they wont be dangerous, but those that do get them shouldnt be allowed them. they arent dog-lovers
What a coincidence!
