Eating carrots doesn't improve your eyesight or help you see in the dark.  The belief that carrots help you see better in the dark can be traced back to World War Two.

To prevent the Germans finding out that Britain was using radar to intercept bombers on night raids, the Air Ministry issued press releases saying that British pilots were eating lots of carrots to give them excellent night vision.

(On the other hand, have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?)

Same with spinach, someone put a decimal point in the wrong place.
Popeye might never have been created if not for that.

Continuing with a WW II theme...

Guy Gibson's dog N****r died on 16 May 1943, the day of the famous "Dambusters" raid, when he was hit by a motorist. He was buried at midnight as Gibson was leading the raid. "N****r" was the codeword Gibson used to confirm the breach of the Möhne Dam.

Under Massachusetts law, it is still illegal to travel on a way with a sleigh or sled drawn by a horse, unless there are at least three bells attached to some part of the harness.

This rule inspired the song "Jingle Bells".

Although referred to by the media as "Wembley Way", the name of the road leading to Wembley Stadium from Wembley Park Underground is actually Olympic Way.

Wembley Way is a short residential street about half a mile from the stadium.

Cooked carrots are better for you than raw. Cooking the vegetable releases more beta-carotene. The raw vegetable only gives you 3% beta-carotene, but cooked you get up to 40%.

"Have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?"

No,but I saw a programme once where they put little pairs of glasses with coloured lenses on chickens...apparently if another chicken got a small cut,the others would attack it because they saw the blood...so that stopped it

The Windy City nickname has nothing to do with Chicago’s weather.

Chicago’s nickname was coined by 19th-century journalists, referring to the city’s politicians being long-winded or boastful “windbags.” However, according to the Chicago Historical Society’s Encyclopedia of Chicago, the nickname may have come from jealous urban rivals, who felt Chicago’s residents’ boosterism, or self-promotion, represented their “windiness” and being “full of hot air.”

Your signature could reveal personality traits.

A study in 2016 purports that among men, a larger signature correlates with higher social bravado and, among women, a bigger signature correlates with narcissistic traits.

Back to WW II...

Audie Murphy was the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II and the most highly decorated enlisted soldier in U.S. history.  He received the Medal of Honor for valor that he demonstrated at age 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, before leading a successful counterattack while wounded.

During World War II, the United States Playing Card Company joined forces with American and British intelligence agencies to create a very special deck of cards. They distributed them as Christmas gifts to soldiers, but they also helped Allied prisoners of war escape from German POW camps. When wet, individual cards peeled apart to reveal maps of escape routes.

It has been re-refereed twice since by leading officials according to modern interpretations of the rules. In 1997, David Elleray concluded he would have shown six red cards, while in 2020 Michael Oliver opted for 11.

Double Indemnity (1944).  (Brilliant film - currently on BBC iPlayer.)

Due to strict wartime food rationing, policemen were stationed in the store where a scene with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck was filmed, to make sure nobody on the film crew was tempted to take away any of the food. Paramount released publicity stills showing four policemen in the store with MacMurray and Stanwyck.

The character Walter Neff was originally named Walter Ness, but director/writer Billy Wilder found out that there was a man living in Beverly Hills named Walter Ness who was coincidentally an insurance salesman. To avoid being sued for defamation of character, they changed the name. In the novel, his name is Walter Huff, and Dietrichson is Nirdlinger.
