8/1 to ride 250 winners
40/1 to break McCoy's record of 289

Rode 180 winners last season. At the end of October he had 65 winners.
With 11 days of October left he is on 109
He is currently priced up at 1/5 to ride 200 winners and 6/4 to ride 225 winners
There are 187 days till the end of the season
I would suggest that 3/1-7/2 and 14/1-16/1 would be more appropriate prices

Hopefully he stays injury free and I get a good run for my money Devil

Of true odds. The trader thst set the market, will know the likely true odds

The unbelievable irony of claiming that traders know the likely true odds in specials markets Happy
Report Hayden October 22, 2025 5:36 PM BST
True odds on markets like that don't exist as it's all about gut feel and to a degree putting the feelers out to find out the lowest odds punters will take.

As Cider rightly says though traders can't create most special markets with anymore more accuracy than the punter in reality hence why the max bet is invariably so small , and as we've seen many times in the past sometimes the mugs in these scenarios are the traders themselves.

All that said i've no personal clue what the true odds are in this case and believe i'm in the same boat as everyone else.

Your first sentence means that it is/was the biggest opportunity in any type of betting, by a wide distance. Unless you have inside information or an edge like fast pics. They are often lazily priced up, sometimes deliberately conservatively (they think). As you allude to Hayden, getting enough on is the only problem (when the inevitable ricks are made).

As I said earlier, I've not studied form, just blindly backed the best jockey in a lucky31 for his 5 rides yesterday and today
And got 4 out of 5 twice
I'd have rather had 0/5 and 5/5, especially today but...
He's won me about 8 grand in 2 days, including the Placepots
I'm probably a medium stakes player, I lay out about 100 quid a day and double that on Saturday or festivals
Couldn't do it again tomorrow, or Cheltenham Friday/Saturday could he?

Thanks for the link, so many talking points in that tale. Not least, the amount and volume of liability in bets they were able to get down!

You never know Reg and it's practically a freebie for you to find out after the last couple of successful days , if it does happen this thread will be bumped for years to come   Happy

Some confusion on the thread i think as i thought the theme was special bets over a period of time as the OP initiated , compilers / traders put prices out there daily for bog standard events sometimes with a view to create black type but sometimes without a view and just to settle somewhere mid-market , as for specials like the one discussed the goals isn't to target the bottom line by making huge profits they're primarily to create site interest = increased footfall = new accounts and some longevity for punters who'll take a plunge and become at least a fairly loyal customer , that's what they hope to mainly achieve with long term specials and of course if they make a few quid all the better but any company will take breaking even with this kinda stuff and trust in the other gains to justify getting involved.

Some of my traders would hide behind the desk when asked for toffee specials as they understandably didn't know where to start with the majority of requests but pretty easy to test the water and they fully understood the business need for such markets , tbh it was normally the marketing dept that requested sexy specials and were normally accommodated as we were all part of a team.

Yes compiling is their job but if i interviewed someone and asked them to accurately price up what the opening post was all about and the true odds with the unknown and all the imponderables to come he'd probably think i was bonkers.

Good luck all     Happy

Report Cider October 22, 2025 8:03 PM BST
Of course it's a guess. Educated guess perhaps. How does a compiler price up IAC before the market has formed on here (as an example). They are guessing. That's why they put up football raconteur Harry Redknapp up at 10-1. If you didn't know how Harry could hold court, he was just another crusty former football manager. And he was trading evens after a couple of days.

As some will know, xmas #1 is my raison d'être in the gambling world, and you could get £Ks of liability back in the day, and multiple bookmakers. Alas, that level of opportunity is gone. But they are still putting up markets for it, and still guessing. Like they made Band Aid fav last year when it should have been about 20-1!

Report Clarky9 October 25, 2025 9:01 AM BST
I've just read through the previous posts on here and am shocked how stupid some people can be. Saying that the layers will know more than the punters when it comes to a special market..

The best example I can use of where they're clearly clueless comes with Harry Kane. He was sitting on around 20 goals for England in his mid 20s, established with Spurs and winning regular golden boots. Skybet put up Harry Kane Specials and I backed him at 11/2 to beat the England goalscoring record. As a striker who doesn't rely on pace, I could envisage him playing into his mid 30s for England, like a certain Teddy Sheringham did.

Anyway, I had my max on, which was about £90 to win around £500 and he scored the record breaking goal about three years ago. He's now on 76 goals (previous record was 53 by Wayne Rooney) and looks like he's going to finish on around 90 odd goals. Probably should have been nearer 2/11 than 11/2..

On a related note, it's very disappointing the lack of effort by the books regarding Specials.
