Perhaps you can expand on that comment acey? If you mean racing then we all have a choice. Love every minute of a great sport, use it as a betting medium or ignore it completely. I have been in the first camp for 75 years since I was taken to ptps every Saturday as a child. I bet most days, follow owners and trainers and stand at a loss of £45 this year on about £4000 turnover. I rarely show a profit on a whole year but only lose pocket money which is fine by me. I increasingly avoid the Festival meetings as I can't bring myself to back Irish trained horses.

gambling  is in fact  as Harry Findlay once famously said the greatest game in the world ,the highs and lows the feeling of backing a big priced winner is hard to match ,you could be doing your money and everything is looking bleak you are in the gutter ...........then bang you knock one up at 20s or 25s and you are reaching for the stars . acey from 50 years betting the first 40 to 45 years I was the same as most punters doing dough on a regular basis ,the 1st 10 -20 years in betting shops before online most if not all done their bollax ,thing is most including me didn't  really give a shyte we were young and it was easy come easy go, the early years you  serve an apprenticeship where you learn how to lose  consistently and a win now and then keeps the momentum going ,obviously I will never get back 50  odd years of dough, that's gone but COVID gave me a break from betting and I had time to think and realise where I was doing wrong ,still make plenty of  mistakes and sometimes go in too crazy on one I fancy usually with disastrous results but on the other hand on the odd occasion have gone smashing in and its won at a big price . obviously over a lifetime I am well down and have little chance of getting that back but I like to think I am in control now and more selective obviously still have more losers  than winners but now and then hit a biggie .
I try to keep it as simple as I can I don't study form in detail it just tied me in knots  most punters cannot  see past the 1st 2 or 3 in the betting and take too much notice of write ups and tipsters .

like most things if you enjoy gambling and can keep it under control then there is no harm having a bet or many bets ,back in the 70s some  punters would stand in the bookies all day betting on nearly every race an old boy I knew would bet on most races all afternoon  most would say he had a problem but  he had it under control imo  he would go into the same bookies every day no Sunday racing them days so 6 days a week   bet 15 pence ew on the tote on  10/1 or bigger pokes  1 per race  most would lose or he would get a few places and every now and then he would hit a winner it didn't matter  to him if he lost at the end of the day as he had got his entertainment he was with fellow punters having a laugh and  banter and he enjoyed what he was doing  and it floated his boat so to speak.
Report Brian October 13, 2025 8:17 AM BST
Absolutely right Foyles. I worked in 3 betting shops as a young man in late 60s and never knew any customer who won in the long run  or who had a problem. It was just entertainment. Nobody should expect to win but if you do, count yourself very lucky.
No disrespect Acey but how anyone can be involved in racing for 40 years but gets upset when formbook gets thrown out of the window is beyond me.
Report The Management October 13, 2025 8:34 AM BST
If you didn't have a "lightbulb moment" pretty much the first time you saw the Betfair interface - and 25 years later you still haven't - there is no hope for you.

There are many ways to skin a cat - but betting like it's still the 1980's (searching pre-race for the winner of a horse race) is akin to trying to skin a cat with one of those wooden forks from the chippy.
Report FOYLESWAR October 13, 2025 8:43 AM BST
each to their own management for me finding winners especially  in group races or graded races is what I enjoy trying to do ,some prefer  trading laying etc I am not dependant on having to win have other forms of income so if I win or lose in the long run it don't matter to me.
Report The Management October 13, 2025 8:48 AM BST
As you say Foyles, each to their own. If your objective is enjoyment and you are enjoying yourself - job done.
Report FOYLESWAR October 13, 2025 8:56 AM BST
obviously we would all like to win every time it may be possible on here trading  laying or whatever  to win 99/times out of a 100 I don't know I've never felt the need to explore it,some may risk a grand to win a score and good luck to them but it doesn't appeal to me and if I'm honest I prob haven't got the arshole to play that way.
Report The Management October 13, 2025 9:26 AM BST
I'd say you've got a straight choice between looking for winners or looking for a profit - because looking for winners to achieve a profit is not something many people are capable of doing.

It's not a coincidence (imo) that there is only one long-standing poster of (pre-race) selections on here (that keeps an accurate/honest running total of P&L).

My comments aren't really aimed at you Foyles - you sound happy enough with your lot - but the opening poster sounds like he is fed up with losing.
Report FOYLESWAR October 13, 2025 9:52 AM BST
prob needs to ask himself does he really want to win or like most happy to win a decent amount now and then ,backing pre race shortish prices in my exp unless you are selective in the extreme by that I mean may be one or 2 bets a in a couple of  months for example you wont win long term, even at that rate you still need a very good strike rate  at the prices .
respect to George I found it played with my mind and affected my actions keeping a record of p&l . I put em up sometimes obviously I'll have more winners than losers but at big prices a winner often wipes out a whole lot of losers .
Report The Management October 13, 2025 10:50 AM BST
It may well not be the case for you foyles - but you've just (perhaps inadvertently) highlighted the secondary problem of making a profit via finding (pre-event) winners.

Even if you overcome the primary issue (the maths) and maybe you find a way of achieving a 3% strike rate at an average price of say 44.00 BFSP or a 5% strike rate at average price of say 24.00 BFSP, etc, etc, - you've done it, you've cracked it (on paper)!

But what about the reality and the variance?

How do you feel, (when as is to be expected at those prices) you find yourself on a run of say 80 or 100 consecutive losers (maybe also throw in a 33/1 winner that you didn't quite get matched because it fell a whisker short of your acceptable back price!) - how is your self-confidence, your resilience, your discipline, your self belief, etc?

Even if you crack the maths of pre-race, you've still got a secondary mountain to climb in terms of the mental fortitude required (that most people don't possess).
Report FOYLESWAR October 13, 2025 12:27 PM BST
thankfully  in the last 5 years ive never hit a run of losers  anywhere that bad on the ones i put up on here which are main bets  which i always  back myself  , sometimes i may have what i call impulse bets if the footy is on the box or if im watching the racing i might place  bets just to keep me from getting bored but i dont put those type of  bets up and they are to small stakes anyway  and from a seperate bank to my main betting bank.as i say i put up more losers than winners but  at the prices i play its to be expected.

I saw it too, again.  I wondered if it was put down specifically to make the bend safer?  That wouldn’t though account for the first track I noticed it at previously.  Is it maybe a dressing for the turf?.  Doesn’t appear to kick up too high. Maybe Chamberpot could feature it on a forthcoming show in the interest of our information.  That’s if he actually gives a fig for the regular racing fans.
