Perhaps you can expand on that comment acey? If you mean racing then we all have a choice. Love every minute of a great sport, use it as a betting medium or ignore it completely. I have been in the first camp for 75 years since I was taken to ptps every Saturday as a child. I bet most days, follow owners and trainers and stand at a loss of £45 this year on about £4000 turnover. I rarely show a profit on a whole year but only lose pocket money which is fine by me. I increasingly avoid the Festival meetings as I can't bring myself to back Irish trained horses.

gambling is in fact as Harry Findlay once famously said the greatest game in the world ,the highs and lows the feeling of backing a big priced winner is hard to match ,you could be doing your money and everything is looking bleak you are in the gutter ...........then bang you knock one up at 20s or 25s and you are reaching for the stars . I have to agree with Harry !

Like many I read his book gambling for life which should have been called,Living to Gamble. Nevertheless,he lived a life that many would envy |

Acey assumes that because he cannot make it pay others cannot either.
Nobody said it was easy to do so |

To the skilled, horse racing wagering is a positive expectancy event.
Hence, it is not gambling |

acey from 50 years betting the first 40 to 45 years I was the same as most punters doing dough on a regular basis ,the 1st 10 -20 years in betting shops before online most if not all done their bollax ,thing is most including me didn't really give a shyte we were young and it was easy come easy go, the early years you serve an apprenticeship where you learn how to lose consistently and a win now and then keeps the momentum going ,obviously I will never get back 50 odd years of dough, that's gone but COVID gave me a break from betting and I had time to think and realise where I was doing wrong ,still make plenty of mistakes and sometimes go in too crazy on one I fancy usually with disastrous results but on the other hand on the odd occasion have gone smashing in and its won at a big price . obviously over a lifetime I am well down and have little chance of getting that back but I like to think I am in control now and more selective obviously still have more losers than winners but now and then hit a biggie .
I try to keep it as simple as I can I don't study form in detail it just tied me in knots most punters cannot see past the 1st 2 or 3 in the betting and take too much notice of write ups and tipsters . |
