Yes, more money and less hours
Thought it was a big ask when I read it

I've always found the Tube drivers protesting about a lack of pay and working conditions astonishing. I believe some drivers get as much (if not more) than a junior doctor (about £35k per annum) without the studying, the passing of exams, possessing the necessary qualifications eg good A-levels, Uni grades, student loans, etc.

How difficult is it to drive a train underground aided by computers and the latest technology eg sensors, cameras, etc,? The controls are non-physical involving no-lifting of objects, no straining of eyes or feet, etc.

How stressful can that be? Also, it's a fairly close-shop ie selection is mainly cronyism or nepotism; outsiders seldom get a look-in eg graduates.

"How stressful can it be"?
Ask a driver that has had a suicide jumper before their eyes, implausible

London is a khazi, tube stops affected are Rejection Bridge, Backstabbing Central & Shattered Dreams Parkway.

I’m sure the last time these strikes happened it was said on here that the drivers are on £60/70k a year. Cushty job if so.
Report uptheirons • September 7, 2025 6:16 PM BST
I have no view on the merit of their pay claim.
As I said,it was answer to implausibles post

the staff at my tube station aint impressed. its the cushiest of jobs. all they do is go or stop. the risk of sucides is tiny and they get plenty of perks. none of em would earn so much anywhere else. i used to know one and he was a top twerp and was sacked for being drunk, long overdue

id sack em all but you cant

Driver-less trains are coming. They are already in operation in Singapore. The main cause of a train accident is human error eg the one involving a tram in Croydon when there were 7 fatalities. The driver was exonerated of all blame nevertheless, driver fatigue and disorientation were cited as probable causes of the accident.

Driver-less trains are the way forward. The savings are humongous, safety enhanced and a much reduced chance of trains on strikes. Tough! But, it's the way forward.
Report uptheirons • September 7, 2025 6:51 PM BST
I sincerely hope that you travel on a driverless train, implausibleLaugh

£35k per annum  nearer 60 k Per anum Imp not bad bad for holding a Knob for a few hours a day
Report saddo • September 7, 2025 7:04 PM BST
I think you can earn a fair bit more for doing that, nanny.
Report impossible123 • September 7, 2025 7:10 PM BST
This is it! No traffic jam except on the very rare occasion of a signal failure. And, you know what? The trains are air-conditioned or well ventilated. I was on the Tube, DLR and Great Northern. They were a joy to travel in compared to the old rickety ones in the late 80's. Everything is push button; free wifi; tap-in, tap out - no more fishing for coins, etc.

Even the travellers smell better.

A full-time tube driver earns about £68k according to Google, and up to a possible £80k and more with overtime, shift allowances for unsociable hours, and for senior roles. This is a humongous amount for doing an ordinary and non-taxing job.

How much training is a tube driver given? Can a bus driver progress to a Tube driver?
Report CROPSICK • September 9, 2025 11:10 AM BST
London is an absolute s@@t hole, went there two years ago and vowed never ,ever to go back again even if Khan licked my knackers.
Report impossible123 • September 9, 2025 1:29 PM BST
'CROPSICK', I think that's a bit strong.

London is progressively heading to and resembling a town in the 3rd world or S Asia. There are many ghettos in London, I agree. But, there are nice bits too eg Dulwich Village, Cheam, Cuffley, etc.

Dulwich & Herne Hill are easily the best areas to live South of the river.

The house prices though are completely insane.
Report impossible123 • September 9, 2025 3:31 PM BST
I'd rather live in Dulwich Village than say one of the big mansions in Regents Park or in one of the luxurious pads in Mayfair; Dulwich Village represents friendliness, family, culture and community; the other two are soul-less and fake.

I'd park my car in Gallery Road with impunity. The locals (joggers) are courteous and friendly.
Report SlippyBlue • September 9, 2025 10:13 PM BST
I'm a ten minutes walk to Dulwich picture gallery, the park is really lovely as well.

been reading all summer on social /media and photo,s of empty tubes ,because khan has destroyed london and no ones using the tube, now they cant use them everyone is missing them, cant get to work, tourism down, SO WHAT TRANSPORT WERE THEY USING DURING SUMMER,WHEN APPARENTLY THE TUBE WAS DEAD AND NO ONE WAS USING IT ?
driverless trains will still have a trained TUBE driver in the cabin, and if you think TFL are going to replace every tube with a shiny 2025 model from singapore ,you need to get out more, what happens when driverless tube/signals etc break down in the tunnels ?

Slippy and impossible talking about Dulwich...
Dulwich Hamlet FC have become a bit of a "hipster" club... Famous old team, now playing in Isthmian League Premier, which is step 7, 2 leagues below National League...
Are getting crowds of 3,000 plus... Incredible, some league 2 clubs would be happy with that
A mate said it's more of a social thing than hard core football fans
Report Catford Toteboard • September 10, 2025 8:31 PM BST
Reg, Im a local and mate of Slippy's. I've been to the Hamlet a few times and it is, indeed, a hipster club. Lots of the support are young professionals who have moved to London and cant follow the clubs they support out of London and want somewhere to take their kids. Lots of kids at their matches and a good atmosphere.
The club and its support are left wing. The first sighting of a Refugees Welcome banner was at their ground.
Historically, they were fiercely amateur and had the last player to represent England as an amateur.
well worth going to a match there.

Hello Catford, remember your dog track as having to give a kid 50p to "mind your car" back in the 70s and 80s, didn't happen at my local Crayford track
I played at Dulwich a couple of times, only a few hundred watching back then

left wing football fans IE ,
dont racialy abuse players or shout homophobic abuse at players ,they used to be called normal fans/people
Report impossible123 • September 11, 2025 11:49 AM BST
My friend's parents in Dulwich Village are both left-wing Labour supporters. One is a doctor, the other a house husband with a disable child. They are very nice people, but no fans of Conservative unlike their relatives and parents who were/are 3 doctors, and a teacher. And, they are true Tories.
