Two races steeped with prestige, tradition and history and this year arguably the two poorest renewals ever of both. indicative of where the sport is at. Jumps racing poorer still, the season geared towards one meeting with handicap fodder being the feature of most Saturdays. The cast offs of the flat chancing their efforts. With all the money into breeding and bloodstock and these gargantuan institutions of coolmore, godolphin, juddmonte etc how is it that this is happening on the flat. Group one races should have full fields and at least half the runners should have claims to such races. Asfoora, a distinctly average oz sprinter made a mockery of ours today looked the winner halfway in.

Asfoora is a previous Group 1 winner, at Royal Ascot last year and was the highest rated horse in the Nunthorpe today.

No **** sherlock. That's exactly my point. Asfoora back from in oz she's nothing special but over here looks a world beater.

World beater?  Certainly the best in the race.  I get your point though the Group 1’s where more than three have a realistic chance are not that numerous.  Are they?
Something needs done though because this BHA seem a very modest lot with little initiative and less racing experience.

Can you explain how the BHA can evolve the thoroughbred to change in the breeding Industry Honcho?
They have put up the money for these races and we can see the results, fair to hold them responsible iyo?
Report LoyalHoncho • August 22, 2025 10:39 PM BST
No I can’t.  I have no knowledge of the industry.
Can you?

Dual Derby and Oaks winners ran.
A good renewal of the Juddmonte International.
What were you expecting?
Report ThePomp • August 23, 2025 1:29 AM BST
Better irons. We should expect better. I wouldn't call it good. Far from it. 6 entrants, disgraceful, with two of those being from British based trainers. Even worse. Only thing good about it was the performance of the winner. The group one races over the first 3 days have been dire. As a betting heat it would be fair to say that the nunthorpe was good at 9/2 the field but that's down to the severe lack of quality amongst the entrants highlighted by an average foreign import winning. Asfoora never a group one winner until she's come over here.

Last years renewal of the Juddmonte was rated as the best race in the world for 2024, first two home were rated 124 and 117, compared to this years first two who were rated higher at 127 and 126!! Have to agree about the numbers though, more depth needed.

Sea The Stars had three opponents for his win.

The meeting has probably been a bit underwhelming, but it's not easy to pinpoint why. I don't feel it's down to the quality of the top runners, and no hopers running just to have a bigger field in a G1 is dumb imo.

The going is up for question, after a lovely summer it should be rattling quick ground, but on the telly at least it's kicking up like they've done something odd to it, it's almost sand like.

If you can't have proper quick going for one of the biggest flat festivals of the year, after the summer we've had, I guess we'll never get it.

Good observation.  I noticed the sand-like kickback too.  Never seen that on turf before.

Asfora was campaigned a month later this year,as she ran out of petrol last year.
Lost in temple at haydock
Won ascot
Then lost.

This year
No prep run
Not ready for ascot
Soft ground ruined goodwood.
Ready for nunthorpe.

Was against ,2 years old olds and hcpers,Jim jungle.
Clearly the only g1 horse in race.

Plus Britain not had a good sprinter for last few years.

I think that there is a lot more options for Grade 1 horses now and with traveling horses abroad seemingly a lot easier than in years before plus a smaller cohort of these horses it could be the norm in future years, god knows where we we would be if Coolmore did not support a lot of our home G1s.
