It's not that quick, that race didn't even break standard. If he was a top class miler he should have been rocking up there on the snaff. I would like to see him in a conventional race over the longer trip. But yes his reputation goes before him and eventually the excuses run out.

A very old saying is,"no foot,no horse".

Good one that. Hadn’t heard it but very true.
Another one I like which rarely applies now is “You can give away weight but you can’t give away ground”. Joe Mercer, who will have started pre-stalls when it would have made perfect sense. |

You could be right. At the end of the day horses don't perform to their very best in every race. We tend to get carried away by how good a horse is. But price is everything. That's why I couldn't back back one that I thought ( maybe wrongly ) was a great horse at a short price against such a very good 2nd fav.

ha, in the early days I was very belligerent and happy to pile in on the ones I liked. I am much more conservative in horse racing nowadays. Obviously matured as everyone does, and found out I wasn't infallible. But as I've mentioned previously, I also found my calling, specials betting (and politics). Which to be honest is so much easier than horse racing, I pretty much only do this for enjoyment and nicking a few quid here or there. However I'll always bet on horse racing as I love it, but not betting in the hundreds or thousands.

we all have our ways Cider , aside from bad e/way acca's which are enforced to play early my bets are 95% of the time placed in the final 30 secs as so much goes on during the shows , can never see the point any earlier as it's missing an integral part of the market and taking prices you think will shorten ( which so often turns out not to be the case anyway ) is a small sacrifice to pay long term for missing out on the very late market activity which invariably is an eye opener.
The only player in my house prior to the final 30 secs is the BOT ![]() |

Yeah it's a long learning process Cider. I was lucky because I played fairly light in the early days. I think the advice Stephen Little gives to bookmaking " Don't take too strong an opinion " also applies to backing. Secretariat got beat 4 times ( & 1 disq )

"Don't take too strong an opinion" is extremely prudent even if the selections looks cast iron eg Field Of Gold (2000G/Sussex), Lambourn (Voltigeur) and Los Angeles (Ireland) just recently. Similarly, PSG against Chelsea in football.
A cast iron bet is only when it wins. |
