Very hard to say jimnast but there has been a good bit of interest in the game to keep it going, seemingly all about the expense involved in sorting out the drainage.
Personally I'd really like it to survive....Thurles on a Thursday is an institution in Ireland.

I thought the two 9 darters was some achievement but this is on a different level...Recently married and loving his new cue....Ronnie seems happy again which is lovely to see.
An absolute genius on the baize....None better

Thanks for posting Reg, it would have passed me by, Used to enjoy a game, never got a break over 30 though.
He is on a different planet. I wonder how many times he has got a 147.

Nobody even wanted to buy a Lada, even worse it was in the Snooker capital of the world, Oldham. I think it was also his only ever 147 in a competitive match, John Spencer was his opponent.

Remembering reading in the 90s when he'd done 147 maximum's in practice he stopped counting so his total must be astronomical. Admittedly the pockets on a lot of the exhibition and practice tables are bigger but still an absolutely phenomenal feat.

That was my initial thought Captain , he's Saudi Arabian now in sporting terms and they've bought him with a mission to take the world championship over there and away from Sheffield , which is why many players now criticize the Crucible for its condition and facilities and they may be correct but probably with a little nudging from O'Sullivan.

He said yesterday the facilities, the food, the rooms, the way they are treated is on a different level. He said he enjoys it so much you want to stay in the tournament as long as possible. Coming from someone who hates the World Championships because of the boredom probably says it all. If he backs the move it will likely happen. Personally I believe the days of it being held at the Crucible are numbered unfortunately.

As a youth keen to learn how to play snooker I bought second hand a book by Joe Davis. Snooker God of the time. I was stunned to read the opening line which was simply - and I’m sure my memory serves me correctly - “If you can’t pot don’t play snooker”! For me at least, it proved to be appropriate because I never did learn to pot consistently. The game is like any other - if you don’t have a natural balance you’ll never master it. Anyone agree or otherwise.

I think in fairness it is like most things LH....an element of natural ability mixed in with how much you can practice and improve. Like golf, should you play once a month with the odd range session you will most likely never improve. Change that to 2 range session a week and 2 rounds of golf and you most likely will. I play a mate at snooker every fortnight, I don't really see much improvement in the way I play, he plays twice or sometimes 3 times per week and is now beating me comfortably.

I started golf at 18. Played at least three times a fortnight for a few years and managed to get down to 7. I never ever threatened to be top class at the game though, however much I tried. I knew a guy who was absolutely brilliant at the age of 18 finishing runner up in the Scottish amateur. Miles ahead of me. He had great natural ability but at his peak he would never have been a match for a top pro. The gulf between useful and gifted is enormous. I’m sure that applies to most sports. It’s good to talk. Hope you are well.

Agreed mate...A friend of mine played off scratch, did nothing spectacular but did nearly everything well far more consistently than most. The difference between the Pros though is off the charts...they play a completely different game!
Be lucky

Snooker is incredibly difficult. I was pretty good at pool but woeful at snooker. I used to enjoy a game of pool after playing snooker, it seemed even easier after changing table sizes.
I’m sure it was mentioned on here at the time, but what about Gerwyn Price hitting a 147? Pretty special for a none professional. He really needs a few days on a par three to land the hat-trick. Shaun Murphy’s claim as having done it is dismissed!

Why have the long jump and triple jump records stood since 1991&1995? Given the advancements made in honing athletes of all persuations to advanced levels thought previously to be unattainable in other athletic disciplines these marks have remained unbreachable for decades.

I'd say you could debate all day between the 9 darter vs 147 , if Les Dennis asked 100 people it would probably be 53-47 to one of them.
I'd rule out the hole in one for the simple reason the mindset is to get close and if it drops in it drops in whereas the 9 darter requires 9 perfect aims and the 147 requires 15 necessary blacks so both are a more exact science in my view.

You never hear about 67 year old Gladys hitting a nine darter or 147 in her first week of playing!
Personally I’d get closer to a nine darter than a 147.

Long jump & triple jump records have stood because there is no money in jumping.
It's that simple imo. Anyone with any aptitude can make a good living in another sport, and the same applies to the equipment companies. In particular for jumping, there is more money in sprinting and also in football.

When I was young I played in a snooker hall in south East London, above Burtons, which they all seemed to be. Used to play against a very young Andy Townsend and Tony Cascarino who I knew both well through football... Andy made a century against me one day, he was that good probably could have made it in snooker if he hadn't gone pro at football

According to recent Sporting Life articles, there have been 567 nine dart finishes since 1999 across all PDC darts tournaments and the number of 147 breaks in pro snooker was 222 ( We need to add on Ronnies two yesterday to that figure).

Montague Burton, the founder of the clothing retailer, strategically placed snooker and billiard halls above his stores to attract a specific clientele, particularly young men.

Did anyone see the hole in one by Mimi Rhodes in the Women’s Open in Wales recently? Her opponent teed of first and hers looked a certain ace until, in it’s dying roll the ever so slight up-slope to the hole saw it slide just left and half turn back to stop just a couple of inches wide. Mimi, next to tee off, hit almost exactly the same shot but with an ounce more pace, and, like a billiards shot hit the first ball and deflected in for an ace. Great to see.

Honcho, that's like a million to one chance As an aside, haven't played golf for years, does the ball that got moved by the deflection, get replaced in it's original position if it's been knocked further away from the hole? Or just tough, play it from there?

Cheers, honcho and saxon Wasn't particularly important because of the rarity of it happening, but golf does have some rules that might not apply to other sports... I like the way that it is still based on trusting the players to score themselves

I have no idea who scored the first televised 147 but I believe Ken Doherty's first 147 was in the Cue Club, Killarney, Co Kerry and the prize was ........ a bicycle.

A hole in one at golf too. It went straight through the windmill blades and into the hole!
Have had about a dozen 180’s. Also had three bulls.

Totally agree Irons , you can't even see the target when striking the ball so for me a hole in one is a mile behind the other two.
Went to a golf event presented by my brother who was captain of the gold club and earlier in the day Step Rush ( brother of Ian ) had sunk a hole in one and he'd be the first to admit he's not one of the 10 best golfers at the club.

Gods honest truth...My Father in law was looking for a hobby. We got him some golf clubs and half a dozen lessons. He initially took to golf, especially the attention he was getting from the golf coach. After 3 or 4 lesssons I took him to a local par 3 course....its really poor and resembles little of a golf course in truth. I suggested we play the 9 holes twice. He teed up on the 12th (3rd hole playing the 9 again) and it was approx 90yds....he thin bulleted a wedge that went straight at the pin....I was looking for the ball thinking it would be way past the back of the green..... we couldn't find it. Low and behold it was in the hole.
Not the prettiest...by far from the best, but something I've never achieved all the same.
A hole in one the 12th hole you've ever played....I doubt many have achieved one earlier than that. He no longer plays.

Mind you, like most golfers I believe should we ever achieve a hole in one we want it to be perfect, not lucky. I would hate a thin bullet, a slap that takes a kick or a duff that runs on and goes in. Other than a nice strike i'd take little pleasure from a chancy hole in one
