The second longest long jump was in 1968.

High jump has also stood for decades.

Wow. We are supposed to be getting fitter, faster, stronger. Seems like we’ve been jumping as far as humanly possible for decades then.

I'd say you could debate all day between the 9 darter vs 147 , if Les Dennis asked 100 people it would probably be 53-47 to one of them.

I'd rule out the hole in one for the simple reason the mindset is to get close and if it drops in it drops in whereas the 9 darter requires 9 perfect aims and the 147 requires 15 necessary blacks so both are a more exact science in my view.

Hole in 1 is about 12000 to 1 for a amateur and 3000 to 1 for a pro

You never hear about 67 year old Gladys hitting a nine darter or 147 in her first week of playing!

Personally I’d get closer to a nine darter than a 147.

Long jump & triple jump records have stood because there is no money in jumping.

It's that simple imo. Anyone with any aptitude can make a good living in another sport, and the same applies to the equipment companies. In particular for jumping, there is more money in sprinting and also in football.

That may be true, Ram, but any top athlete competing in those jump events still want to be the best they can.

Ronnie is without doubt the best ever, that's a given. But he's never won the World title with a broken arm!

That said, if you want a proper champion, google Grace Chambers.

When I was young I played in a snooker hall in south East London, above Burtons, which they all seemed to be. Used to play against a very young Andy Townsend and Tony Cascarino who I knew both well through football... Andy made a century against me one day, he was that good probably could have made it in snooker if he hadn't gone pro at football

Our local snooker hall was above Burton’s too. Never knew that was a common thing.

Nice story. Some sportsmen are very gifted at many sports.

According to recent Sporting Life articles, there have been 567 nine dart finishes since 1999 across all PDC darts tournaments and the number of 147 breaks in pro snooker was 222 ( We need to add on Ronnies two yesterday to that figure).

Flojo still holds the 100m & 200m world records, set in Seoul 1988.

Montague Burton, the founder of the clothing retailer, strategically placed snooker and billiard halls above his stores to attract a specific clientele, particularly young men.

Clever idea. Not sure I ever went into Burton’s because it was below the snooker hall though.

Did anyone see the hole in one by Mimi Rhodes in the Women’s Open in Wales recently?
Her opponent teed of first and hers looked a certain ace until, in it’s dying roll the ever so slight up-slope to the hole saw it slide just left and half turn back to stop just a couple of inches wide.  Mimi, next to tee off, hit almost exactly the same shot but with an ounce more pace, and, like a billiards shot hit the first ball and deflected in for an ace.  Great to see.

Honcho, that's like a million to one chance
As an aside, haven't played golf for years, does the ball that got moved by the deflection, get replaced in it's original position if it's been knocked further away from the hole? Or just tough, play it from there?

I can’t remember.  Match play might differ from stroke play.  The cameras didn’t linger so that wasn’t made clear.  Sry.

Wasn't particularly important because of the rarity of it happening, but golf does have some rules that might not apply to other sports... I like the way that it is still based on trusting the players to score themselves

I have no idea who scored the first televised 147 but
I believe Ken Doherty's first 147 was in the Cue Club, Killarney, Co Kerry
and the prize was ........ a bicycle. Happy

Should get a Lada car every time you don't score a 147.

I got a hole in one at a longish par 3, 218 yards playing off 12.
Snooker, on a going day a 50 break once in awhile and cr@p at darts.

I got a 121 at snooker (red, yellow, red!).

A hole in one at golf too. It went straight through the windmill blades and into the hole!

Have had about a dozen 180’s. Also had three bulls.

My best was 147 (true) - treble 19, treble 20, double 15

Anybody who can swing a golf club has the chance of a hole in one.
No ordinary snooker club player could ever a 147 break

Totally agree Irons , you can't even see the target when striking the ball so for me a hole in one is a mile behind the other two.

Went to a golf event presented by my brother who was captain of the gold club and earlier in the day Step Rush ( brother of Ian ) had sunk a hole in one and he'd be the first to admit he's not one of the 10 best golfers at the club.

Gods honest truth...My Father in law was looking for a hobby. We got him some golf clubs and half a dozen lessons. He initially took to golf, especially the attention he was getting from the golf coach. After 3 or 4 lesssons I took him to a local par 3 course....its really poor and resembles little of a golf course in truth. I suggested we play the 9 holes twice. He teed up on the 12th (3rd hole playing the 9 again) and it was approx 90yds....he thin bulleted a wedge that went straight at the pin....I was looking for the ball thinking it would be way past the back of the green..... we couldn't find it. Low and behold it was in the hole.

Not the prettiest...by far from the best, but something I've never achieved all the same.

A hole in one the 12th hole you've ever played....I doubt many have achieved one earlier than that. He no longer plays. Grin

Mind you, like most golfers I believe should we ever achieve a hole in one we want it to be perfect, not lucky. I would hate a thin bullet, a slap that takes a kick or a duff that runs on and goes in. Other than a nice strike i'd take little pleasure from a chancy hole in one
