...the difference between a "tip" and an "opinion"?
For me a "tip" is something that is kept under wraps and only known by those who should be privy to that information, eg horse (or other) has been waited with, a problem has been found so improvement is likely, been waiting for the ground, this has been the target etc.
An opinion is well, just that.
Would you rather receive a "strong tip" or a "strong opinion" from someone who's opionion you respect?
We have all been asked "give us a tip for the National" if your friends know that you may gamble, but is it your answer a tip, or just an opinion?

An open unanswered question on the Ante Post thread for those who discuss races. Impossible the public enemy and target for the multitudes that frequent this pool here will oblige without fear of losing face!

impossible123 • July 21, 2025 5:51 PM BST Nothing I can envisage except pilot error or an act of nature eg his stall opening late, etc. All things being equal this race is his for the taking. The Juddmonte over 10f the extra distance is an unknown but I think he's up to it.
Thank you Impossible, value your opinion.

Unfortunately there is NO room discussion from some, let alone a tip or talk of a horse on horse racing forum!!
It’s easier to bring down a thread after another outburst because they don’t agree and can’t answer simple questions!
Were all of the hostages released????
Why is there not the same sympathy for those innocents dying in Ukraine or call for a ceasefire? - From scarf wearing flag waving hypocritical @rs*wipes?”
Very triggering questions that baffle and frighten that lot!

You are a liar Dela and you have proved that in the past as well when you claimed to have blocked me until you foolishly replied to the bait I put down for you The thread that belonged on the Politics Forum was certainly not brought down by me and I did not rage at any time, unlike you. You try to portray yourself as cultured with your supposed love of art but then post "Kiss my Kipper" when losing a debate. How very adult of you. You insulted Hayden and wasn't man enough to apologise. I would be surprised if you find the time to ever have a bet on here.

Smoky Hill 25 Jul 25 12:16 A fairly simple question to answer..
A tip implies insider information.. An opinion is a calculated guess.
However, some opinions can derive from a tip.
Agree Smoky....but then why are shall we describe them as sport columnists or even journalists often referred to as tipsters? Definitely blurred lines for me.

Horatio Nelson, yes the question to ask is when is a tipster also a punter? Tom Segal once said, in his own words ''I'm a tipster, not a punter'', so if you bet on his opinions, which is what they are, then it's with your own money, not his, apparently. Media are fond of highlighting the nice winners from these 'tipsters', but not when they lose. Segal made a bit of a fool of himself over Falakeyah at Ascot for instance, he was all over it like a rash, but his opinion on that one soon got buried with the dismal run. Unless they get insider information, their 'tips' are nothing but opinions. You then have to trust that opinion, or not.
There is only one instance I can recall where a t.v pundit gave a direct 'tip' to the viewer. This was way back in 1999 at Goodwood on the old Racing Channel, none other than Geoff Lester who was holding the microphone [tipster - Man on the Spot - Sporting Life] in those days. He tipped a filly called Kashra, seemingly with some insider info. It won at 7-1. I know of no other pundit since who's done that.
Oh get a room you two - Holiday Inn?Horatio Nelson, yes the question to ask is when is a tipster also a punter? Tom Segal once said, in his own words ''I'm a tipster, not a punter'', so if you bet on his opinions, which is what they are, then it's wi

Horatio, what do you think of Tipping Tom? He's a recent innovation and I think a good one, but he's employed for the purpose, not a presenter. Presumably he gets inside info.

Must say smokey as an ex avid watcher of the Morning Line I haven't been the same with the Opening Show.
I hate to be negative about things but I found it so watered down on occasions it was like a cooking programme demonstrating how to boil an egg.
I have heard of Tipping Tom when watching an episode recently but payed it little notice, I don't often pay much attention to the presenters unless they really come across as very strong on one then i'll add it into the mix.
When it comes to tips I have paid far more attention to friends who I rate rather than columnists.
I am fortunate to know what I would class as a couple of very good judges who throw any "info" they get my way. Some is info, some just an opinion.
If Tipping Tom is genuine and it gives people interest on a Saturday morning to have a flutter personally I'm all for it

No disrespect the fellow HN but Ken Pitterson ( I think that’s his name, if wrong I apologise ) is hardly compelling. Chapman is rarely so but at least gets stuck into matters of importance. Oliver is a skilled and experienced anchor.

I feel for Ken a little but I suppose if that is going to be your line of "expertise" then you will need to bring more to the table than "the fav looks well, the 2nd fav looks well, and the 3rd in could well improve ".....
If Ken genuinely had an edge he would be both revered and silent.

There’s only so much Ken can say Horatio, the trainers tell you more when they reveal body weights. How much condition their runner has put on over the season.
Remember City of Troy, the one that showed at the Guineas was unrecognisable to the Colt on show at Epsom?

I know many can't have a bar of Chapman but at least he is not another fence sitting gravy train riding middle of the road don't want to upset anyone type.
I'd rather any opinion than no opinion. I quite like him.
Oli seems quite self depreciating but that could just be on the tele. I have wanted to take to Rishi but he has too many fingers in too many pies to be taken seriously. No qualms with the ladies, all knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of he game collectively.

When looking at horses it’s important to go back to your point, it’s someone’s opinion.
Francesca has never said she likes the look of Calandgan, they seem obsessed with big horses. They like a type. Before the race in the paddock she didn’t the filly that gave Venetian Sun a close run.
The last two fillies that Weld brought over for the Aga were tiny, nothing to look at.
So in this case I believe it best to trust your own judgment and form your own independent opinion.

It’s not difficult to do, you get weighed as you enter the track. That can be shared. It’s done in Hong Kong and we are behind here not having such details available.

Not a bad call from Moi on the AP thread. Some are suited to Ante Post as they can look ahead, whereas others can’t see beyond breakfast or at a push lunch!
Delashay • April 21, 2025 11:30 AM BST Goliath’s run may have been a sighter for Graffard who’s Calandagan would be suited to the long home straight in Tokyo as it’d give him the time needed for his long acceleration. The prep is key to his chances, perhaps ship in earlier and recover his condition.

The usual attempt at deflection when Dela has disgraced himself again. At least you have finally learned to spell Ante Post correctly. Your facade of being cultured has been well and truly lost after posting "Kiss my Kipper" and resorting to homophobic insults.
