Fantastic watching the old stuff on tele
Just annoys me that it comes up at the start with that warning about " you may be offended, set in a previous era, etc" and all that rubbish I still rate Allo Allo as the best ever scripts and characters |
|
By:
I agree Reg. Allo. Allo. ( never do get its punctuation right ) is very funny, and so clever at times as well. I remember when it first came out and reading a scathing criticism of how it cheapened the memory of all our war dead etc; which proved to be wrong. Apparently loads of European countries took to it too, because it throws eggs at everybody. His little monologue at the start of each episode is so funny and sets each episode up.

Leonard Rossiter was in also in a very early Steptoe called "The Lead Man Cometh".
Brilliant! |
|
By:
So many great recalls of Steptoe on here. Brilliant stuff. Did he not get horse chit on a sandwich once while on the buggy and just blow it off the filling and then take a big bite?
|

By:
I never quite got Allo Allo, couldn’t watch any of it, but
I suppose there’s a seat for every ars* or an ars*for every Seat ?? I did watch a series called flebag, thought it was excellent Very different type of comedy, Phoebe Waller bridge, gorgeous Woman too |

By:
Poncho, Allo Allo is a marmite TV show
You either think that it's brilliant, or just don't rate it Loyal honcho obviously thinks like me, but there's plenty with your opinion as well Good job that there's dozens of channels to choose from I'm watching Doc Marten right now, some funny bits but not side splitting like Allo Allo imo |

My generation had quality comedy like Hancock, Steptoe, Likely Lads, Dad's Army, The Royle Family and The Office.
Now we have the rancid Mrs Brown's Boys ...... |

Ironronn, agree about Mrs Brown's Boys, started off OK but awful now
As a teenager, Monty Python was the best for us lads, although tapes of Derek and Clive (Pete Cook and Dudley Moore) off their heads, ad libbing about anything they could think of, coupled with a few cans was very good |
|
By:
Derek and Clive were hilarious Reg, obviously coarse and base humour but me and my group of mates loved them.
Same with Python, can't believe its 50 years since The Holy Grail - we could all quote that film line for line, great stuff. And what do we have now.....? |

Was it Steptoe & Son with the greyhound that stopped for a ciggie ?
|
|
By:
currant affairs Hayden , there was an early steptoe cant remember the full details but they were skint and pulled up in a posh street on the horse and cart outside a big house with a for sale sign outside ,toffee nosed neighbours looking out the windows aghast ,horse leaves a big pile of steaming shyte in the road
hyacinth bucket types send the husbands out , they end up paying the steptoes not to move in |
|
By:
there was a greyhound called Hercules in the film version, turned out to be useless because it was blind
|
|
By:
True Foyles , currant affairs can always be relied upon for raisin trouble.

The one where Harold decides they need ot better themselve by looking at houses in Suburbia?
Rag and bone men not that welcome. |
|
By:
I right in saying they lived in Oil Drum Lane?
Can never forget when “Candid Camera” sent a team into a very posh, leafy London Street to take away the sophisticated street name signs and put up Railway Cuttings signs. It was hilarious as residents hit the roof, abusing the “workies” something terrible. |
|
By:
candid camera that bloke going mmmmmmmmmm laughing oh that one

|
By:
The candid camera one I remember best...
The bloke in the pet shop sticking his hand into the giant fishbowl, with a hidden fish shaped carrot in his hand, and pretending to eat a live goldfish to the horror of the other customers |
|
By:
Yes, my favourite too. Still laugh as I think about it.

Actor Dudley Foster appeared in two Steptoe episodes, as the leader of the Poker School who fleeced Harold, and as the Police Inspector investigating the fake burglary created by Albert after breaking Harold's porcelain collection.
Sadly Foster committed suicide (by hanging) at the young age of 48 in 1973, a week after the death of his father. |
|
By:
Dudley Foster - that's a blast from the past. He used to crop up in countless different shows on tv when i was a kid, i never realised he topped himself, how sad.
He did some films too, i recall him being part of a stellar cast for Terms Of Trial which starred Laurence Olivier, it was a Lolita type plot from memory , he played a detective. Very good actor. |

In the episode "Seance in a wet rag and bone yard", a very young Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth Bouquet) plays "Madam Fontana"

By:
reg butler for some reason I thought that goldfish candid camera sketch was in a dry cleaners that had a bowl of a few real goldfish swimming around on the counter and the fella who pretended to catch and eat them was a customer ....hilarious the reactions especially the woman , horrified they'd shout at him you just ate one of those poor fishes you horrible man ! he would say something like oh yes you should try one the little ones are delicious
![]() ![]() brilliant ! |
|
By:
Foyles, you're probably right regarding the location, it was 50 years ago so only just remembering the outline story
There was another good one where Jonathan whatshisname and 3 others all start following in a line behind a stranger walking down the High St and as he turns around they all break off in different directions, pretending to look at a shop window Doesn't sound like it was that funny as I wrote it but was very good |
|
